Iowa State finishes second with two titles at the Big 12 Championships

Iowa State walked away with a runner-up finish at the Big 12 Championships with 116.5 team points, two Big 12 Champions and eight grapplers qualified for the 2020 NCAA Championships.

Final Team Scores:
1. Oklahoma State – 147.5
2. Iowa State – 116.5
3. UNI – 111.5
4. South Dakota State – 94
5. North Dakota State – 90.5

7. Wyoming – 75.5
8. Northern Colorado – 72.5
9. Fresno State – 57
10. West Virginia – 41
11. Utah Valley – 33
12. Air Force – 25.5

The day started with consolation matches where Iowa State solidified its eight NCAA qualifiers. Final placements went like this:

149: Jarrett Degen: Third Place
165: Chase Straw: Fourth Place
174: Sam Colbray: Fourth Place
184: Marcus Coleman: Fifth Place

When it came to the championship rounds David Carr and Ian Parker each secured their first individual titles.

No. 2 Ian Parker vs. No. 1 Dom Demas – 141 pounds

These two aren’t unfamiliar with each other. Demas walked into this match 2-0 against Parker this season so far.

The match went into a sudden victory two where Parker was able to get to Demas’ leg and secure a takedown to clinch the title.

No. 1 David Carr vs. No. 3 Wyatt Sheets – 157 pounds

There is nothing like winning your first Big 12 title but getting the job done against a Cowboy on their home turf is even better. Sheets was able to get an escape to take the lead 3-2 but Carr was able to work his magic and get a takedown to bring the score back in his favor. Carr ultimately won 6-4.

At 125 pounds No. 3 Alex Mackall went down against No. 1 Nick Piccininni of OSU in a 3-1 decision, walking away runner-up.

Heavyweight No. 2 Gannon Gremmel went up against No. 5 Brian Andrews of Wyoming and ultimately lost in a 3-2 decision also walking away runner-up.
