Iowa State finishes second with two titles at the Big 12 Championships

Iowa State walked away with a runner-up finish at the Big 12 Championships with 116.5 team points, two Big 12 Champions and eight grapplers qualified for the 2020 NCAA Championships.

The day started with consolation matches where Iowa State solidified its eight NCAA qualifiers. Final placements went like this:

When it came to the championship rounds David Carr and Ian Parker each secured their first individual titles.

No. 2 Ian Parker vs. No. 1 Dom Demas – 141 pounds

These two aren’t unfamiliar with each other. Demas walked into this match 2-0 against Parker this season so far.

The match went into a sudden victory two where Parker was able to get to Demas’ leg and secure a takedown to clinch the title.

No. 1 David Carr vs. No. 3 Wyatt Sheets – 157 pounds

There is nothing like winning your first Big 12 title but getting the job done against a Cowboy on their home turf is even better. Sheets was able to get an escape to take the lead 3-2 but Carr was able to work his magic and get a takedown to bring the score back in his favor. Carr ultimately won 6-4.

At 125 pounds No. 3 Alex Mackall went down against No. 1 Nick Piccininni of OSU in a 3-1 decision, walking away runner-up.

Heavyweight No. 2 Gannon Gremmel went up against No. 5 Brian Andrews of Wyoming and ultimately lost in a 3-2 decision also walking away runner-up.
