Dr. Buck back to the blog……..
Last week the medical blog listed some factoids about muscles. With Halloween just around the corner, it seems appropriate to do the same with bones.
So here’s another quiz:
In a growing child, long bones grow in length only at each end at special bone factories.
T or F
Muscle cell numbers are set at birth, but bone cells multiple enormously during childhood.
T or F
A good percentage of an infant’s skeleton at birth is cartilage.
T F
Why didn’t the skeleton cross the road?
While there are 600 muscles, the human body has around 200 bones
T or F
Does every bone have a connection with another bone?
Y or N
The longest bone in the body is the femur.
T or F
Bones can atrophy(lose mineral) or hypertrophy(enlarge) like muscles
T or F
The most common reason an orthopedist puts screws and plates in a body is a fractured ankle.
T or F
In sports medicine, the most common fractures include: foot, ankle, clavicle, wrist and hand fractures.
Is surgery more often done on ISU football players fractures than non athletes?
Y or N
Bone immediately adjacent to cartilage surfaces in joints is forgiving and accommodating to stress
Y or N
Why are skeletons spooky?
(The answers are in italics.)
In a growing child, long bones grow in length only at each end at special bone factories.
T or F
These factories are called the growth centers or epiphysis located at the end of the long bones. Bones grow in length as cells are added to the growth plate.
Muscle cell numbers are set at birth, but bone cells multiple enormously during childhood.
T or F
Bone is metabolically active. Bone cells are resorbed and added frequently in the skeleton throughout life.
A good percentage of an infant’s skeleton at birth is cartilage.
T or F
The spaces in the wrist and hand are where the “bones” are cartilage and not bone.
Why didn’t the skeleton cross the road?
Because he didn’t have any guts.
While there are 600 muscles, the human body has around 200 bones
T or F
206 to be exact. The smallest is the stapes in the middle ear and the longest the femur.
Does every bone have a connection with another bone?
Y or N
All except the hyoid bone in the neck which protects the windpipe.
The longest bone in the body is the femur.
T or F
Bones can atrophy (lose mineral) or hypertrophy(enlarge) like muscles
T or F
Bones under a cast, ie immobilized, will lose mineral and strength. Bones will strengthen with stress, such as weight lifting.
The most common reason an orthopedist puts screws and plates in a body is to treat a fractured ankle.
T or F
In sports medicine, the most common fractures include
Foot, ankle, clavicle, wrist and hand fractures.
Is surgery more often done on ISU football players fractures than non athletes?
Y or N
Surgery has certain risks such as infection, but surgically stabilized fractures frequently heal quicker and allow athletes to safely return to their sport in a shorter time.
Bone immediately adjacent to cartilage surfaces in joints is forgiving and accommodating to stress
Y or N
The bone immediately adjacent to the joint is called subchondral bone and has a certain “give” to it, particularly in young people. This plus the surface cartilage softens impacts with activities. This is why youngsters have a bounce to their stride when they run.
Why do skeletons look spooky?
They just do.
Well, Happy Halloween and let’s hope we can spook the KSU Wildcats and snare a victory.
