Men’s Golf: ISU 23rd After Two Rounds of NCAA Championship

HUTCHINSON, Kan. –The Iowa State men’s golf team shot a second-round 299 at the NCAA Championship this afternoon at the Prairie Dunes Country Club. The Cyclones were in 23rd-place after two rounds at 577.

A rain delay halted play for almost two hours in the morning, causing a change in the format of the event. The top-15 teams after the second round were assigned third-round tee times on Monday and are eligible to qualify for the match play portion of the event beginning on Tuesday. Teams 16-30 began their third round of competition at approximately 4:30 p.m. this afternoon and are not eligible to play in the match play.

Iowa State was unable to finish third-round play. The Cyclones will complete their unfinished holes and wrap up the 2014 NCAA Championship tomorrow morning.

The wind picked up here on Sunday making Prairie Dunes a much more difficult test.

Sam Daley led the Cyclones in the morning with a 71 (+1) to catapult him into the top-30 (T26) in the medalist race at 140 (69-71, even). Daley was all over the cup for the majority of the round and he finally got his first birdie on No. 6 (his second nine) when he dropped his approach shot tight. He followed it up with a birdie on No. 7.

The best individual finish by a Cyclone in the NCAA national finals was by Nate McCoy, who tied for 29th at the Riviera Country Club in 2012.

Collin Foster is in a tie for 75th at 144 after firing a 76 in the second round. Foster got off to a rough start, going +7 through 11 holes. He battled back to go 1 under in his last seven holes.

Scott Fernandez was tied for 99th after the second round at 146. The junior All-American carded a 76 today and never could get his putter on track. His lone birdie was on the par 5 17th hole.

Ruben Sondjaja also bounced back after a rough start. Sondjaja was +8 after 10 holes, but went 2 under in the final eight holes to card a 76. He’s currently in a tie for 120th at 149.

Jack Carter fired a 79 today put him in a tie for 126th (150).
