mayfield loses, 6-5 isu. weatherman up 4-1 early.

american has 1 guy ranked #1. could be a very good dual between us. i like our chances but it will be tough.

Looking ahead to NIU:

The Minnesotta match this morning went as follows:

1/8/2011
Minnesota - 26
Northern Illinois - 9

125 Zachary Sanders (Minnesota) MD Nick Smith (Northern Illinois) 16 - 8
133 David Thorn (Minnesota) DEC Israel Montemayor (Northern Illinois) 10 - 7
141 Michael Thorn (Minnesota) DEC Tristen DeShazer (Northern Illinois) 8 - 1
149 Vince Castillo (Northern Illinois) DEC Patrick Smith (Minnesota) 4 - 0
157 Bryan Deutsch (Northern Illinois) FALL Joseph Grygelko (Minnesota) 1;42
165 Cody Yohn (Minnesota) DEC Matt Mougin (Northern Illinois) 9 - 2
174 Scott Glasser (Minnesota) MD Zach Benzio (Northern Illinois) 10 - 2
184 Kevin Steinhaus (Minnesota) DEC Brad Dieckhaus (Northern Illinois) 7 - 0
197 Joe Nord (Minnesota) DEC Mike Lukowski (Northern Illinois) 2 - 0
285 Anthony Nelson (Minnesota) DEC Dakota Greenhaw (Northern Illinois) 3 - 1

Looking at how we match up by weight, with the ISU wrestlers in bold:
(assuming similar lineup to our last dual)

They have nobody ranked so I'll just post records (Taking the records from the NCWA website) .

125 - Brandon Jones(6-8) vs Nick Smith (16-6)
133 - Ben Cash (6-7) vs Israel Montemayor (4-7)
141 - Chris Druin (10-4) vs Tristen DeShazer (10-5)
149 - Nate Carr (9-3) vs Vince Castillo (4-10)
157 - Trent Weatherman (9-5) vs Bryan Deutsch (13-6)
165 - Andrew Sorenson (5-1) vs Matt Mougin (6-8)
174 - Jon Reader (17-0) vs Zach Benzio (3-6)
184 - Cole Shafer (6-5) vs Brad Dieckhaus (7-5)
197 - Jerome Ward (9-2) vs Mike Lukowski (3-11)
285 - Kyle Simonson (15-4) vs Dakota Greenhaw (3-9)

Overall we're obviously the favorites, but I like to see that Cash, Weatherman, and Shafer all have very winnable individual matches. They need some confidence.

While Shafer was not supposed to set the world on fire this year, Trent Weatherman was expected to be the third best wrestler on this team, behind Drouin and Reader. His apparent regression has me questioning what Jackson is doing in there. I wasn't expecting him to go out and win his weight, but getting absolutely murdered by everone he faces with a pulse is just not cutting it. I have a hard time believing he is going to be able to beat Cozart or Moreno the way he is going next year.

if we beat niu, we will most likely face the loser of wisconsin and oregon state-wisconsin is ranked 3rd, osu is 6th. we would need to win that to finish in the top 8-which would actually be a solid finish for us this year whether some of you like it or not.

Thanks for the updates, even though the news was bad. I felt like I got a nice quick run through the meet when I logged on.

I think that one is more on Weatherman than Jackson, Weatherman is the only real disappointment on the team. Everyone else is performing at or above expectations. I am not an insider at all or anything, but the impression I get is that Weatherman is a beast in the room but just has yet to put it together on the mat. I am not expecting much out of him the rest of the year but I think by the time he's a senior he'll be a beast on the mat as well.

The Wisconsin-American dual isn't over, but it is looking pretty likely that we'll get American

Wisc. 15-13 after 174

Wisc. must have had a team point taken away.

Re: National Duals-ISU vs NIU

Looks like we're getting American. Here is how they did last round (Heavy is in progress as I post this, but the dual is out of reach):

1/8/2011
Wisconsin - 23
American - 13

Individual Matches
Wt Winning Wrestler (School) WinType Losing Wrestler (School) Score
125 Thomas Kelliher (Wisconsin) DEC Thomas Williams (American ) 3 - 2
133 Tyler Graff (Wisconsin) TF5 Kevin Tao (American ) 22 - 6 ( (5:00))
141 Matthew Mariacher (American ) MD Daniel Arnel (Wisconsin) 19 - 6
149 Coulthurst Schmitt (Wisconsin) DEC Ganbayar Sanjaa (American ) 4 - 3
157 Steve Fittery (American ) FALL Charles York (Wisconsin) 1:17
165 Andrew Howe (Wisconsin) TF4 Patrick Graham (American ) 24 - 7 ( (7:00))
174 Barreiro, Phillip (American ) DEC Shawn Perry (Wisconsin) 7 - 5

197 Derrick Borlie (Wisconsin) MD Daniel Mitchell (American ) 9 - 1
285 Ryan Flores (American ) Eric Bugenhagen (Wisconsin)

Here's how we match up (records are the latest on the NCWA website, I don't think they include today)

125 - Brandon Jones(NR/NR) (6-8) vs Thomas Williams (NR/NR) (12-7)
133 - Ben Cash (NR/NR) (6-7) vs Glenn Donatelli (NR/NR) (3-4)
141 - Chris Druin (12/14) (10-4) vs Matthew Mariacher (19/19) (16-3)
149 - Nate Carr (NR/NR) (9-3) vs Ganbayar Sanjaa (8/14) (9-1)
157 - Trent Weatherman (NR/NR) (9-5) vs Steve Fittery (1/1) (10-0)
165 - Andrew Sorenson (10/NR*) (5-1) vs Patrick Graham (NR/NR) (12-5)
175 - Jon Reader (1/1) (17-0) vs Phillip Barreiro (NR/NR) (5-11)
184 - Cole Shafer (NR/NR) (6-5) vs Thomas Barreiro (NR/NR) (5-8)
197 - Jerome Ward (12/12) (9-2) vs Daniel Mitchell (19/19) (13-2)
285 - Matt Gibson (17/16) (15-4) vs Ryan Flores (2/2) (10-2)

We have a very legitimate shot in this dual. We match up with them pretty well.

Re: National Duals-ISU vs NIU

we have to get a win out of cash, drouin and ward imo.

Completely agree with that. I have faith in Cash though, he's outmatched a lot but wrestles his heart out, so I think he'll get us 3 points this evening. Of the three, Ward is the one that worries me the most.
