Players vote with their feet. In the early 1970s, Newton played in the Big 8 conference with the Waterloo schools, Cedar Falls, Ames, Fort Dodge. Jerry Moses’ team killed Newton 98-6 and next year they struggled getting kids out for football. They changed to the CIC, I think, and within a few years won a state championship.

Sure, it affects them, kids want a chance to win, and are not going to play when they know that they are going to not only lose but be destroyed in these games. You are always going to get kids that will play no matter what, but you need those other kids that will play because the team is winning. If the team is not winning, those other kids are not going to go out. It's easy to go out a Valley or SEP, all your friends are on the team, and you are going to win games, that is not the case at East or Roosevelt. The kids know they have no chance and are not going to put in the time because they see it as a lost cause.

Then that’s a failure of adults that happened a long time ago. Like I said, there shouldn’t be any illusions as to the reality of the situation and no one is forcing anyone to do anything.

No one is forcing anyone to go out, when you can compete and win games, they want to be part of the success. The opposite is also true, when they are losing game after game, year after year. Kids want no part of it, because they see no chance of success. So instead of playing football they will choose a sport that the team is winning in. Hell, I credit those 25 kids at North or Roosevelt a lot more than those 80 kids playing at SEP or Valley. Because those 25 kids want to play football and know they are going to lose most of the games, but still are showing up for practice and doing the things needed to win, just because they want to be on the team that hopefully does turn it around.

Orient-Macksburg school district is done after 2024-25. First district to dissolve since Corwith-Wesley 9 years ago. Probably several more to follow with the looming enrollment cliff, especially in rural areas of the state:

They're being killed by open enrollment moreso than population. Over half of the kids who live in the district are OE'ing out.

Time to consolidate counties. Southern 1/3 of state should be 3 counties.

You're right, but sooner or later I'm afraid they'll still lose motivation if they don't win at all. Some changes are needed..

I grew up thinking Valley was huge. The two HSs my kids have attended are both larger, one by almost 1000 and we're just in the burbs too.
Those Waukee numbers are still amazing.

Map of every high school in Iowa. 10 counties have only 1 high school in the entire county (4 in top 1/3, 5 in bottom 1/3, 1 in middle).

I thought of this thread when I saw that! Upon further review it is fairly deceiving. Due to space College Community (Prairie) is depicted in Benton County despite being in Linn, they may have a few students from the Benton side of Walford but to that extent they have students in Johnson county. CPU is in southern Linn and neither Center Point nor Urbana are there.

Benton county has two high schools fully in the county (BC and VS) with CPU serving the NE corner from Center Point.

It would be really cool to see this same picture from 1995, especially in the north-central region.

seems like all of the schools have closed or consolidated. - CWL, Woden, Dows, Cal, Northeast Hamiliton, Alden, etc. Kind of sad, but its really expensive to run a school district that may have 130 kids k-12 spread out over 20 miles. I really don't think there is any way to fix this situation. Not like there are any huge tech or financial companies setting up shop in Woden, Iowa.

It's almost like you are going to end up just having your County seat towns, and everything else will be animal farms and corporate farms with the small towns servicing as places to go to a bar and get gas.
this has really expedited over the past 30 years, so I can't imagine another 20-30.

i am also surprised by the number of counties that just have one school.

Valley having more than 1k students than most other 4A/5A schools is something, you’d think they’d be winning more state titles.
