Yeah, I personally thought that he had lost the team and there was no digging out of that hole. I assumed one and done in both tournaments. With the way they were playing, it was really hard to see a different conclusion to the season. I didn't want Prohm fired, but if this season ended that badly followed by what looked like major attrition and a rebuilding year next year, it sure looked like the beginning of the end. Of course, I would never stoop so low as to @ players or coaches on twitter, but I probably did participate in some message board discussions venting frustrations.

All that said, I'm happy that I was wrong and am extremely impressed that Prohm was able to pull the team out of the downward spiral that they were in. I wish that they could have righted the ship earlier, because the conference title was there for the taking, but winning in KC is a great consolation prize.

I do think that SOME are going a little overboard admonishing fans for being upset (Billy Fennelly among others). The team was playing really poorly for a stretch there...lack of effort, infighting, etc. That's going to garner some criticism when fans actually care.

You do realize that what you describe in your first paragraph is insane and you made that all up in your own head, right?

There’s criticism and then there’s the over the top “fire prohm” ********. And there was WAY TOO MUCH OF THE LATTER. It wasn’t just enough to say the team played like crap. Many people had to say the coach was a failure for not winning a national title.

I don’t think people want Prohm fired. Just improvement. Firing is over the top.

Problem is I think our fan base has begun developing beyond-unrealistic expectations. At the beginning of the season, realistic expectations were a solid bubble team to good chance of an NCAA bid. Then we got heavy in the race for the conf title, and when we stumbled we forgot our initial expectations. This might be OK even understandable, but we started acting like spoiled children. We’re a better fan base than that... at least we claim to be.

This is a team depending on many freshman. Getting them to this performance IN THE TOUGHEST BASKETBALL CONFERENCE is a great accomplishment.

The vast majority of people did not want him fired, even if there was some pointed criticism. There were a very vocal few, however, who were more or less agitating for a change.

They weren’t unrealistic expectations is the problem. Some fans need to Raise the Standard of their expectations. Coming into the year we had some high variability in expectations all of which included an NCAA tournament. On the low end of the freshmen had trouble adjusting we were looking to be mid pack and a solid bubble team. When the team showed that they were looking to meet most of their upper potential, expectations narrowed to the upper portion. Once we hit our slide an inexplicably lost as many home games people were rightfully frustrated and criticized the coach for losing the team. Now that we hopefully appear to have gotten the team back on track he deserves some credit. All fans should be absolutely thrilled with winning the tournament. I don’t think there is one that isn’t. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they have to 180 on Prohm. He has always been a good coach. The question is he an elite coach which you need to be in the Big 12. No one has ever said he is elite at Xs and Os. The team did a really good job in the last two games. There is legitimate criticism in his personnel management. We all want him to make better men. At this level though he has to recognize it can’t come at the expense of winning.

Criticism of Prohm doesn’t mean hatred and not wanting him to succeed. Criticism of Prohm is in wanting Iowa State to continue to grow into the second tier Blue Blood group that it can. Critics of Prohm should long to be wrong. I know I do. I want him to succeed incredibly bad. Sometimes I think he is in over his head though and I’m not going to blindly excuse his shortcomings.

I have never understood all the hate for prohm. I was worried a little late in the season, as I thought he may have lost the team. I know for some people it is impossible for them to accept prohm because they loved Hoiberg so much. I am glad to have a coach who is having some success, who wants to be here, and who is a pretty good recruiter also.

I think the real problem was that this team is made up of a lot of guys that are talented, but have not really played together a lot and several young guys in the mix. Prohm knew it, and tried to build a team out of what he had. Things really went south when they started to loose games. I feel like Jacobson, Babb and Prohm provided great leadership in getting everyone back to team instead of self. Loved the "Family" tee shirts. I know it was dorky but the players sure went out and played for each other, the coaches and the fans in KC.

You make a lot of good points with which I can agree, but I can’t buy into the bolded. I want/expect Prohm to not put winning above making better men. Our university and those men deserve that.

I know you’re trying to backtrack here, along with the rest of the crew, but this makes no sense.

You all continued to focus only on what he didn’t do. Your little group think was focused only on negatives, failures, and shortcomings. The only positive comments were back handed.

If that is what you all really thought, and judging by the reactions to getting called out, it was. Why on earth would you want a guy that you thought was so bad as the coach of your team?

Saying you didn’t really want him fired after making negative comment after negative comment, is completely illogical. You were all saying he wasn’t any good/return to the dark days of Iowa State basketball/he’d never win/etc.

If that were truly the case, why would you want him to destroy the program?

Now after he won something, again, with his own players this time, you and the crew are trying to backtrack after everything you all wrote on here.

We shouldn’t win while letting bad people run the asylum but what I meant and I think Prohm may forget is he is paid to win. If there are problems kick them off the team. Mentor them as a side thing away from the team if you need to.

You can be critical and not want someone fired. I’ve praised him too.

I know I’ve told you this before, but get help.

You know there is a history feature here, right?

And it would be so much easier to respect your crew if you all would just be honest. Clonedlion, for all the things I disagree with him about, at least was.

Listen to Naz’s interview with the register on one of the links. They all knew what was being said.

I've said before it's fine to criticize his coaching. I've done it before, and I like having him as our coach.

But I'll never understand the people who say they don't like the guy (I know there are very few people that think this, but they're out there). Not sure how you can watch the videos of him with his family after the game ended and carrying his son up the ladder, and not like him as a person.

You're really stepping in it.

And it would be easier for me to take you at face value if I didn't specifically remember you as being as reluctant as possible to give CSP any credit back in January for beating Texas Tech on the road.

I get that, but at the same time, that is a "them" issue. The site is called CycloneFanatic.com, not FredHoibergFanatic.com. Be a Cyclone fan first.
