Start of rant.....

So I live in the metro area where there is a lot of Cyclone fans right??

Why is it that when I go driving around Ankeny etc...I see so many more Hawkeye License plates and flags flying off the house than ISU? I thought it was 60/40 in favor of ISU around here. Our FIRST problem is that it is 60/40 in our own backyard. The other problem is that the 40 percent Hawks put up more gear, flags and plates versus our 60 percent. That has to change. Could you imagine if it were 60/40 in Cedar Rapids/IC? What do you think the ratio is in that area? My guess is 95/5. How many times have you seen a Iowa Billboard on the way to work in Des Moines. Nobody says anything because Half the people love it.

SO THEN, I go to Kohls in Ankeny (which is 20 minutes south of Iowa State by the way) and I see a FRICKING SHRINE of Hawkeye gear. It had Halogen lighting spot lighting it and at least 5-6 racks of Hawkey Tee Shirts, Hats, Work Polo's, etc. So I go to look for the ISU gear and I found ONE hat. Thats it, ONE HAT. I have bought an ISU polo there before but damn that was rediculus.

I also went to adventureland and more Hawkeye shirts and hats around the place then you could imagine. We have got to step it up as fans and our teams need to frickin wins some games to stop the madness.

End of rant....

Um this happens because people dont think ISU wins anything. Cause Iowa wins a bowl game and its shoved in our faces by the media. Only way to overcome this is play better than them every year. Have the type of year we should.

I agree...I think it is important that us as fans start to market our team. I've got window flags for my truck and a flag outside my house. And anyone who enters my house knows what university i root for. I have to say even though it is in EIU's backyard, CR isnt quite 95/5. I'd say more towards 90/10 or 85/15 just because a lot of ISU alums find their jobs and family in either CR or DSM. This doesnt mean that those alums are vocal, or evemn give money to the university. I think that JPOLL will help to get more of our alum not only in IA but all over the US to come out of the woodwork and donate. I think that it is important to our success that we, as fans, market the university just as much, if not more, than the fans of our "big brother." If anyone can do that, Jamie pollard can.

Hey Goonies,

Do you think its a good idea to have the LE picture on your every post. Not exactly something to be proud about, not that I think you are proud about it. But that's what your posts suggest. As this site is free and attracts all kinds of fans, (young, old, new, true, players, coaches, ect.) it's probably a good idea to take it off.

If we want to be the ones to take ISU athletics to the next level, and above the second best image that this thread is all about we need to leave the regrets of our past behind. There are plenty of pictures portraying a positiive image of ISU and those should be posted. Not ones that embarrass and pour salt in out wounds.

Just my opinion.

I've mentioned this before, but I never get tired of pointing it out. There are way more Cyclone plates and plate frames in Iowa City than there are Hawkeye plates/frames. I've lived here for almost two decades now and I still can't figure out why that is, but there is a surprisingly good-sized (and rabidly loyal) Cyclone following in the metro.

My best guess is that there are quite a few folks who graduate from undergrad at ISU and go after advanced degrees in the graduate programs at the UI. Like it or not, Iowa State and Iowa each have graduate programs that complement the other school's undergrad education nicely. (Iowa's got great grad programs in business and music and medicine, and we have great grad programs in engineering and sciences and design.)

So a lot of Cyclones do grad programs at UI (I know quite a few myself), or else they go get a job in Iowa City, since the area does have a lot of high-tech job growth which looks for people with the type of degrees ISU students typically have.

I would say the Iowa City split is actually about 85/15 (if not 80/20) and that Cedar Rapids is 70/30 or so. The CR Cyclones just aren't typically very vocal.

It's all about what sells. It's easy to blame retailers or media, but in truth, hawkeye fans are willing to spend more on gear, so that is what the stores tend to offer more of unless you're in Ames. In western Iowa, about 40% of what is available is Husker, 40% Hawkeye, and 20% Cyclone. I have to say though that I have always seen way more ISU plates in most parts of the state. I believe that gap has narrowed in recent years though.

Actually I see many more Cyclone plates in Cedar Rapids than Hawkeye and Panther plates combined. (The Panther plates are easily mistaken for Hawkeye plates from a distance.) And in my neighborhood, there are way more Cyclone flags flying and maybe one Hawkeye flag.

Many of the Cyclone fans in this area are silent, but there is also a fair number of hard core fans. I believe the hard core fans feel the need to show ISU colors because of the way the media ignores the Cyclones. They others roll over and let it happen as if they are too intimidated to speak up.

I care, that's why I made a comment. I think it's unnecessary and tasteless but if he wants to display it there isn't anything I can do about it. I'll move on.

Thanks guys. I was wondering about the percentage in the state. So best case scenerio is 15%-20% in Eastern Iowa, 25% in western Iowa and 60% in central iowa??? Does that sound about right. We need to get that to 30/40/70. Its basically going to take about 10 years of winning. IF you have some extra money laying around my advice as a cyclone fan would be these links (if you don't do this already).

Go to a sports store that sells some ISU stuff and pickup something that markets the school.

Come on over to Waukee guys. Drive down the streets in my neighborhood and there is definitely more ISU fans than Iowa. I can't vouge for the entire town of course, but I know in my neighborhood there are signs of more intelligent life!

I've been lurking on this message board and other Iowa State message boards for awhile and have come to a conclusion:

Iowa State fans are nothing but a bunch of whiners.

From the Big 12 TV package to the changes at Clear Channel Des Moines to whining on this board about not being able to find Cyclone gear in KC, whining about how anti ISU the DSM Register is, and now this.

I'm neither an Iowa or Iowa State fan and IMO, you want to know why Iowa State sports isn't taken seriously in this state? It's your non stop whining.

Steve Deace, perceived by ISU fans to be their leader, nailed it last month when he said that ISU fans need to quit their complaining and support their team. Case in point, I got dragged to Merle Hay Mall last Saturday and while sitting in the playland watching my son, I made an effort to see how many people walking by me were wearing either Iowa or Iowa State gear and in one hour, I saw one ISU shirt and that was worn by a Nigeran woman, compare that to being in Omaha on the 4th of July and Husker gear was everywhere.

In Kansas they don't require a front plate so everyone has their University plate on the from or a chiefs one. There are a lot of ISU plates down here I also see a lot of Iowa ones but more ISU ones. I would say I also see more ISU plates then Nebraska plates too. I also live with and Iowa fan and we change the flag in front of house on each other every day. We made the bet that which ever team won the football game we get to leave that flag up but he didn't live up to that bet.

a portion of IA State fans are whiners on this board...your first statement is false...all boards have this element.....and MH Mall is a bad testing ground for your theory...white supremacist and gangstas don't usually fly the college colors

garn, I think you'll have a lot of people disagree that Deace is perceived to be a leader for ISU fans. He is a Michigan fan and only roots for ISU because he stands to make money if they are successful.

Also, I think you'll find that not only ISU fans are a bunch of whiners...people in general are whiners. And people on a message board in the middle of the slowest sports time of the year have to complain about something.

What an idiot? I bet you are just chuckling telling your other Squawkeye buddies at work how funny you think you are with your clever wit on the ISU message board. Boy did you burn us, because you can't get more credible than a quote of Steve Deace and using big names like "whiner." Because we all know that fans of other teams in this state never whine. No one from EIU would say anything like "If Drew Tate would have played the whole game last year it would have been 56-3 Iowa" or "If ISU didn't let convicts like Jason Berryman play football than they wouldn't have had a chance" or my favorite "ISU won't punish it's players if they are good enough. We did what we needed to with Pierre (after his third offense)." Go back to talking about your national championship hopes in the little time that they are still possible again this year.
