Well, I just got back from the movie Valkyrie. Since the critics were blasting it, I figured that was a good reason to see it. It turned out to be a pretty decent film. If you have a taste for war movies or spy thrillers, it fits into both a bit. Tom Cruise wasn't the best choice to play the lead but he was better then I expected.

The theater was packed for whatever thats worth considering its X-Mas and a nice 70 degree day down here in Panama City Beach.

I saw all the previews for this, and I'm totally stumped as to how this could possibly be a "thriller". It's a historical event. We already know what happens. How is this suspense?

A lot of people paid money to see Titanic.

While true, Titanic was marketed as a love story. The movie was not about the historical events, it was about fictional characters placed within that context. Valkyrie is marketed as a suspense thriller. Most suspense thrillers hinge on the fact that you don't know how it ends. Whereas, in this movie, we already know Hitler doesn't die, and the assassination attempt fails. I struggle to see how this could be suspenseful.

Well, I never really said it was a "thriller" exactly. It has elements of a spy "thriller". I also wont go so far as to call it a great movie. It was not bad, and certianlly not as bad as the critics made it out to be.

Had they gotten someone else to play the lead, this could have been a great film. Cruise was just wasnt very believable considering the rest of the cast were solid veteran actors.

Regardless of how well this film could potentially be, there's no way I'm going to support anything Tom Cruise does.

It's an intriguing story, but I'd just as soon see the History channel version of it than watch some Hollywood adaptation with crap actors.

I wasn't trying to make it seem like you were lying. The film is marketed by the studio as a thriller.

I could see the "thriller" aspect. We don't know how many times the conspirators almost got caught or had to tie up loose ends. I actually don't know if Hitler found and punished all the people responsible and if he did, how long it took to find those conspirators.

The thing that I'd have a hard time with is the lack of German speaking from Cruise. Even a German accent would have been good.

Was Tom Cruise hung with piano wire at the end?
Was Hitler pissed that Auburn hired Chizik? We should somehow work Tom Cruise into the "Hitler on Chizik" vid.

The little bit of trailers I have seen of this reminds me of Kevin Costner in Robin Hood where they realized that they could never, ever pull off the accent without everyone laughing. Ughh. Painful, but a big money maker with the Bryan Adams power ballad getting the swooning ladies to buy it on VHS.

I love the comment above about "more aged actors" than Cruise. LOL!! He is gotta to be 45 or 50 himself. He has a pretty solid body of work from the boxoffice TopGun/Days of Thunder point of view. The Raelian UFO's that visit the Scientology skin lab are keeping him young. Ever see "Eyes Wide Shut"??? What a freaking mistake. Death or no death of director.

Lastly, I will leave you with a good recommendation. Watched the Patrick Stewart version of Dicken's Christmas Carol last night. Wow. I had not actually sat down and watched a Christmas Carol production in 20+ years, but how very inspiring. God Bless us everyone.

It's Hollywood, so they'll screw with the moviejust to give it more suspense. It will probably be a fictionalized account of what really happened.

Were the conspirators punished? Let's put it this way, some of his closest friends and generals ended up dead.

I, like many a man, was forced to watch it with the significant other. I liked it for one reason.....boobies. Kate Winslet's boobies. Enough said.

I don't put in that much time and spend that much money to see boobies unless I can put my face between them.

I dont proclaim to be an expert on the plot but I think they tried to stay pretty true to the original events. I saw a History Channel account of it a while back and the movie followed it pretty well. There didn't seem to be too many parts of the movie that were in there just for dramatic effect (there were a few of course). Cruise was certianlly the weak point of the movie. Too bad they couldn't have casted someone better but oh well.

Have not seen the movie so I bring this up more as a question. I'm normally not a big fan of subtitled movies but it would seem this would be one that needs them. Just watching Cruise speak perfect English in the trailer seemed very odd. Did it bother anyone who actually saw the movie?

They started the movie with Cruise speaking German but switched switched to English like Hunt For Red October did, if you remember how they did it in that movie.
