I think its probably pretty apparent by now that I'm a bit of a movie fanatic myself, so for those others like me out there, I thought it would be fun to compare lists of everyone's favorite movies so far this year. My only rules are that these lists can only contain movies INITIALLY RELEASED to theaters in 2017, and can only contain movies you've actually seen (should be a given). Have fun, and I'll start with my list.
  1. Wonder Woman - spectacular, charming movie that made me feel like a kid again. While this movies had a few flaws, particularly in its third act, the great directing, great casting, heart, and charismatic charm of everything made this my favorite movie of the year so far.
  2. Baby Driver - Man, was this movie a ton of fun. Like Wonder-Woman, due to its great directing, great acting, and great story did this movie have tons of charm. Due to its music coordination and practical stunts, this movie easily had the best car-chase scenes I've seen in a long time. No doubt this movie was the sleeper movie of this summer for me.
  3. Beauty and the Beast - I was skeptical of this movie at first as well as the casting of Emma Watson, but Disney hit this thing out of the park yet again with another live-action remake. The music was great, the acting was great and most of all, it just felt like Beauty and the Beast. Congrats Disney.
  4. Spider-Man Homecoming - Great fun way to reinvent Peter Parker with an amazing casting of Tom Holland as a high school kid. Not only was this movie fun, but it Tom Holland is by far the best Spider-Man yet. Marvel also finally fixed its villain problem with an amazing performance by Michael Keaton. This movie has actually grown on me the more time has gone on, but it still needs to remember that sometimes you can go overboard with constant quips and jokes. Music score was disappointing too.
  5. Logan - Tremendous way to reinvent something new within the superhero genre. Couldn't have asked for a better swan song for Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. The directing was great, the acting was great, and we finally got to see Wolverine without handcuffs.
  6. Hidden Figures - I went into this movie thinking it would be boring and it was absolutely none of that. This movie maybe had the best performances by any actresses/actors on this list. Not only were all those ladies a ton of fun, but they were also made to be super likable. This movie oozes heart and is easily the best family movie of the year so far. Kevin Costner was pretty great in it as well per usual.
  7. War For the Planet of the Apes - This was a tremendous wrap-up of one of the most underrated and underappreciated trilogies of all time. This movie is full of drama, social metaphors, weight, and heart. Caesar is truly one of my favorite movie characters of all time. Matt Reeve's directing is also debatable as the best on this list. Please see this movie.
  8. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - Great fun movie with a sneak lot of heart and laughs. However, its biggest flaws is that sometimes not everything needs to be a joke. Spider-Man Homecoming suffered from the same flaws at times.
  9. Kong: Skull Island - Not an amazing movie, but it was a super fun action-adventure movie for what it was. It was just one of those movies that did everything fairly good, but nothing great, and that's ok. I still walked away satisfied and wanting more.
  10. Split - Sneaking good thriller/horror flick from M. Night Shyamalan. Its been a long time since he has directed a good movie, but he finally did it again. This movie is a super low-budget flick that keeps you on the edge of your seat always.

Honorable Mentions: John Wick: Chapter 2, Lego Batman Movie, Live By Night, The Shack, Power Rangers, Alien: Covenant, Dunkirk

Just OK: The Mummy, Cars 3, Get Out, The Fate of the Furious, The Lost City of Z, King Arthur: Legends of the Sword, Girls Trip, The Dark Tower, A Cure for Wellness, Fences

Stinkers: Baywatch, Ghost in the Shell, The Great Wall, Chips

I've only seen Beauty and the Beast, The Big Sick, and Wonder Woman in the theater so far this year - I'd rank them as such:

1. The Big Sick - Poignant, hilarious, sad, awesome. Kumail just crushed it with this.
2. Beauty and the Beast - I really, really like Dan Stevens. He was awesome in Downton Abbey, and is great in Legion. He is a chameleon, and he did great as The Beast. I also really liked Josh Gad as Lefou.
3. Wonder Woman - It was waaay better than I thought it would be, being a super-hero movie. Very well-done, and well-acted.

I've only been to Hidden Figures and Detroit. Hidden Figures was a lot better than I expected and I still don't know how I feel about Detroit. You spend the first 45 min of that movie wondering who the main characters actually are. It's all over the place. The last half is great though.

Edit: Forgot about going to see Split and the Lego Batman Movie.

I'd probably say:
Hidden Figures
Detroit
Split
Lego Batman

Wonder Woman - Just really entertaining. Good casting.
Spiderman Homecoming - fun flick. This was more of the Spiderman I remember growing up.
Hidden Figures - some great moments. I came out of this one surprised at how much I liked it
Beauty and the Beast - aesthetically really well done
Guardians of the Galaxy II - There were some great moments, but not nearly as re-watchable as the original
Cars 3 - better than I expected, but I hope they end the series with this one
Atomic Blonde - A mix of a lot of things, convoluted plot, but a couple really really good action sequences
Lego Batman - huge comedy gap between the original Lego Movie

Didn't get a chance to see yet, but want to: Big Sick, Logan, Baby Driver, Dunkirk

It seems like Dunkirk people are in two groups. They either really liked it and put it up there with some of the best WWII films ever, or they were like me and found it hard to follow, lacking character development and even boring at times to the point where it was just alright. However, even though those people like me felt that way doesn't mean we didn't appreciate the unique film making angle Nolan went with.

Of the movies I've seen released this year, I'd rank them:

Dunkirk
Wonder Woman
Spiderman: Homecoming
Logan
Split
John Wick: Chapter 2
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
The Dark Tower
Ghost in the Shell

Yes, I put GotG that low, and even debated putting it below The Dark Tower. I seem to be one of the few people who thought GotG was mostly a turd. The plot was OK, but there was just too much forced tension between main characters (why are they always yelling at each other?). It worked OK in the first movie, but drove me nuts in the sequel.

I've only seen Baby Driver, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Dunkirk, but of those, I'd have to say, Dunkirk is far and away the best movie among them and maybe the best movie I've ever seen. The tension during that movie was unbelievable.

This isn't really on-topic, as I rarely see movies in the theaters, but has anyone seen this "MoviePass" program? Apparently it's a subscription service that costs $9.95 per month and it allows you to see one movie per day at participating theaters. I guess it's been around for awhile and they just lowered the price to under $10 (the CEO of this company was one of the Co-Founders of Netflix).

It sounds like the "catch" of the $10 price point is that in turn the company will sell your personal data that they have access to.

This just popped up yesterday, but figured you cine-files might be interested. Here are links to a couple of articles that discuss MoviePass.

Man, I just realized I haven't seen crap for movies this year. I did see Split and Dunkirk. Thought both were very good. I also saw Life, which I thought was so so.

1. Beauty and the Beast
2. Hidden Figures
3. Wonder Woman

It's the only movies I've seen this year. And I found it difficult to rank them. All of them were wonderful movies that were highly entertaining (to me) and on any given day this order could shuffle pretty easily.

I thought Split stunk donkey balls.
The 2017 movies have underwhelmed me. Liked Baby Drive and want to see Dunkirk.
Not a super hero movie fan. They are fine but I don't get into them. Includes Logan

Hidden Figures, which I enjoyed, was 2016 but if we can include that, Lion was very good.

Logan
Wonder Women
Baby Driver
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Kong Skull Island
Split
Spiderman Homecoming.

Logan is my favorite movie easily this year, and possibly my favorite super-hero movie outside of the Nolan Batman Trilogy. I still think the Guardians movies are the best Marvel produced movies, just because the cast is so likable.

Get Out #1 huh?? You aren't alone as there are a fair amount of people out there who really like that movie. However, I totally just don't get the hype on that one apparently. I just thought it was meh. Definitely didn't get why they thought the director of it was "so amazing". Maybe I'm just not a horror guy though too.

On a separate note, thanks for reminding me about Fences. I forget to throw that on the movies I've seen, so I'm adding it now.

Off the grid
Logan
The Lego Batman Movie (for the kids)

These are all the movies I've seen this year. I have zero time to go watch movies and I love seeing movies in the theater!

Get Out has easily been the best film of the year so far.

Then again, my tastes are weird. Going backwards from this year...

2017 - Get Out
2016 - Kubo and the Two Strings
2015 - an epic cage-match between Mad Max: Fury Road and Interstellar
2014 - The Imitation Game
2013 - Pacific Rim

...just to have that out there. :p
