Another provocative topic was the comparison of MBB and WBB fans? MBB obviously has more fans in attendance at games. However, they argue that WBB fans are more intense, perhaps because they are older, have been coming to games for years, and identify closely with the team. This is seen in how brutal they can be in responding to bad calls by referees.

What do you think? Who has the more passionate fans? Is the average MBB fan at games more/same/less passionate than the average WBB fan?

Not exactly sure.
Passionate to me is loyalty. I remember before bill and it looked like a JH game in there. Couple hundred at best. The women haven’t had the bad stretch like the mens have had. So I lean to the men.

No kidding. This is ridiculous.

They make it seem like there’s no crossover between the two groups.

I have season MBB tickets, but only make a WBB game every once in a while. But I still watch the WBB games regularly and cheer for them.

Sure, there are plenty of MBB that don’t watch WBB, but that’s not unique to ISU. Most Cyclone fans want all our teams to do well.

WBB.

Not even close.

Yeah because when someone says Hilton Magic its the womens program that is thought of first rather than the mens.

I get a definite "protective" vibe from a lot of the older WBB fans, as if it's their own daughters (or granddaughters) out there.

I agree. Society says MBB is a big deal and it receives lots of media attention. The fans of the women have generated that loyalty and enthusiasm without the outside support. I think the coaches and athletic department did a really good job of marketing as well.

Pure passion and crazy is the hockey fans. Only place I’ve been to where the fans and opposing players end up in fights.

Why are they trying to pit the two groups against each other?

Come on, they didn't pit the two groups against each other. They just had an interesting conversation about some of the differences between the groups. It was something I hadn't thought much about, but since I attend both, I found it very interesting and thought some might want to discuss it more. Not every discussion about differences is a conflict, even ones that acknowledge that some are better at some things than others.

I believe it was in the late 90's or early 2000's ISU had the number 1 and 2 attended BB teams in the state men were one women were two. Iowa men were 3. Women's attendance (physically) has went down since then but quite a few people are owning seats but not attending as often.

Overall I would say WBB fans are more forgiving (less critical) of individual players than the men's fans are. I would say they are about equal on criticizing the coaches .

I kinda just figured the WBB group of fans were just a part of the more hardcore ISU fanbase. It feels kinda weird. Like asking if Iowa State football or basketball fans are better. Like it's the same group, just more a subset of it
