This year's team compared to the 04-05 NCAA team?

The coaches would be interesting to watch in that game.

I would take this years team, also. Not so sure you couldn't neutralize '04 guards.

Flame me if you must, but i've always felt that Stinson was overrated. Not saying he was bad or didn't contribute, just feel he was overrated. Lots of ballhogging and turnovers

Will Blalock
Curtis Stinson
Rahshon Clark
Damion Staple
Jared Homan

Diante Garrett
Lucca Staiger
Marquis Gilstrap
Craig Brackins
Justin Hamilton

I think 2004-2005 would win 76-70. Hard to match up with Stinson and Blalock.

Blalock, Stinson and Homan would killll this years squad.

and the fact that Curtis Stinson was basically the head coach for that team.

No, Aldrich barel guarded him at all.

Here's who guarded Brackins, per an article in a Wichita paper:
It did matter to a lot of other people. It mattered to Marcus Morris, Markieff Morris and Mario Little, who helplessly guarded Brackins on Saturday.

I agree that last year he was susceptible to being muscled, but his versatility allows him to draw the musclers outside and still be effective. He didn't get that when we played Iowa...he didn't draw Tate out and face up as much as I think he could have, and he didn't take him off the dribble like he could have, IIRC.

Things "clicked" for CB later in the season, and his confidence went through the roof.

I agree. Stinson could be stopped with the right approach. Blalock was good until the game was on the line and he had to shoot free throws. You could see his knees shaking at times.

This is correct. He has great skills but was a terrible team player, playing for a coach that had zero control.

He was much more of a team player when he had others around him willing to score... If you remember those games that next year, nobody wanted to score, they would run away from the ball. He just did what he had to do. Watching them play when he wasn like watching a couple of years ago when Taylor wasn't in.

And IMO, that is caused by the complete lack of control from Wayne Morgan, and Stinson being in charge of the team. Its not the other players' fault.

this years team has depth 04-05 only had a 6man rotation realy so what we lack this year in talent we make up in depth. we also have a much better coach at least with x's and o's that is. and the players this year can play alot of diff. positions like we have people who can play 2-3 diff spots. 04-05 realy didnt have that other than stinson he could play the 1 or 2G

So the same thing was the problem with Greg's first team? He had no control?

IMO, that is a totally different situation. Mac was in first year with that team if I remember correctly, and that team did not have the players that the wayne morgan team had. Mike Taylor basically was the only guy that could score on mac's team.

Morgan took a talented team that won an NCAA tournament game and crashed it into the ground the next year. Mac's teams are starting to buy into the system, and are getting better, while Morgan's teams got progessively worse and less cohesive.

Totally agree on the depth and coaching x's and o's. Not so sure about Stinson playing the 1.

Also, must say that our end of half/end of game to win possessions are better now. Got so tired of Stinson trying to one on five his way to the hoop, only to get it stolen.

You prefer the passing it around the perimeter and launching a 30 footer? Give it to your best guy and let him take it. Stinson made alot more of those plays than he messed up. That last year he just didnt have Homan to dish it to. Alot of selective memories...

The biggest difference if this years team were to play the 04-05 team is that they would have fits with the press. That team made great guards look bad in the press.

Jamaal Tinsley
Kantrail Horton
Marcus Fizer
Paul Shirley
Martin Rancik

Please...

Please what? No one knew how good these guys were going to be at the start of the season--no one knew ANYTHING about Tinsley.

Kantrail Horton <> Marquis Gilstrap?
Marcus Fizer = Craig Brackins
Paul Shirley <> Justin Hamilton?
Martin Rancik <> LaRon Dendy?
Jamaal Tinsley ??? Garrett/Buckley/Colvin?

That still leaves Lucca Staiger and Scott Christopherson to match up with...man, it's late and I'm tired. Who knows how they will all pan out?

I was aiming for the retrospective comparison. Some good matchups but the '00 team has yet to be passed in the way they dominated the Big 12 and cruised through the NCAA tourney before playing MSU on Izzo's driveway.

Dreaming big though:wink:

Not this comparison again...

Dendy didn't do much of anything in JUCO and you have him equal to Martin Rancik? Jamaal Tinsley??? I'll take Jamaal over any guard combination from this years team or any other team in America going into this year. Shirley has had stints in the NBA and suddenly Hamilton and him are equals?

Shake my head.

Remove Shirley from the starting line up and put in Stevie Johnson, and you have Michael Nurse to use. To compare 00' with this years team is super dumb. Thats the best team in Cyclone basketball history guys (32-5). ISU in 00' was better than 09' at every positon. Marcus Fizer in college basketball is more scarier than Craig Brackins. I'll never forget that dunk over Mihm who at the time was big time player in the conference. Plus Larry was coach of the year that season. He was in his prime, and drinking in peace. THANK GOD BRIAN PETERSON IS GONE!
