The way too early '09 prediction thread

Patience lasts till 2012 but is the brains behind the talent enough? We need to be much smarter players than arm tackles, false starts, tackling out of bounds, dropping catchable balls, throwing 2 yard passes, not raising our arms on defense, getting turned around while Jeremy runs by, blitzing so the whole stadium knows it coming, running out of bounds too soon. That stuff should have been fixed in non conference by the coaches. You know, we just about made every mental mistake in the back in the last season We looked like we had our stuff together better last year after Dan was fired. Perhaps the farther we go the more mistakes of stupidity we make? No matter what anyone says on this board, the coaches will have to look at themselves a long time in the mirror and make changes like other people. Maybe the Tampa Eleven will work in 2012. It has been a miserable failure this year. Maybe we can get 600 yards, but we need more manly men inside the five yard line. Looks like the dline recruiting needs to be a higher priority than the offense. Remember old Bill Callahan stacked his offense to the detriment of the defense and he lost his job because of it. We only held Colorado under 30 points in the eight conference games. We have to score 30-35 points every game. Looking like a good defensive end and a real deep threat wide receiver are a must to play in this league.

I'm not predicting anything except that by August, over half of this board will expect a bowl game....

And the people who predicted a bowl game this season were not out of line by any stretch of the imagination. This team was close to 6, even 7 wins.

Iowa- outgained them by nearly 100 yards, inside the 5 twice with no points. 5 missed filedgoals. Lost 17-5

UNLV- For some reason we took the first half off. Dominated them after the half. UNLV QB makes the throw of his life to win the game in OT

Kansas- 20-0 lead at half. Key drops late in the game

Colorado- Terrible play call at the end to lose on the 6 inch line.

Kansas State- 630 yards of offense. Left 21 point on the field through penalties, blocked kicks, and fumbles.

For some reason, I am not as down as I thought I would be. There is hope.

Those are all some very good (heartbreaking) points. Kinda reminds me of the Texans this year too - so many opportunities missed.

Why wait until August? Depending on how the rest of recruiting goes, I'll say that it's a possibility now.

One pivotal game might be Iowa, but I think we should win in Ames.

Sad to say it, but this season put us squarely back into "little brother" status within the state of Iowa. Our highlight of the season was a close loss to Iowa. Think about that.
If we go 2-10 or 3-9 next year, with a home loss to Iowa, I doubt that Chizik comes back for another year. Pollard will have lost all credibilty with his predictions of better things for Cyclone football.

Have to disagree. The only way there's a "little brother" status is if you ask for it. And you seem to be begging for it.

Acyually, I think that perhaps you need to find another team for next year, if you're going to make all sorts of unfounded assumptions like this. You've lost all of your credibilty.

Fans who accept what is going on, like you, are the ones who are really doing damage to the program. What you're really saying is "we're just Iowa State - why expect more?"

Bull hockey. What you're doing is saying "We're Iowa State--we can only expect less."

You don't even bother to take a close look at the realities of the program, you just mope along and cry about it. Go on and on about how we're horrible, and it will always be that way. "Oh, gee, we had a bad season, so that automatically means we'll be bad next year".

And that's pure garbage.

While I'm with you in the fact that I don't think we should ever be happy with the season we just had I do ask what to do about it.

Do you really think it would be better if we all stopped giving money, all stopped going to games and that we all demanded that every one be fired?

There is no one easy fix.

All the above aside, if we play at the same level next year, we will win three.

That means we need to be better next year compared to what we have been for two years.

Better on third down stops, better punt return catches, more red zone TDs, deeper passing, fewer penalties, early aggression (not like we just got off the bus), and more risk in playcalling.

No, I'm not going to stop giving money. I am a Cyclone fan regardless of who the coach is.
I did email Jamie on disappointed I am with the progress, or lack of it, concerning the football program. If he is going to stand up there at our Rotary meetings and tell us how excited we should be for the upcoming season, as he did a few months ago, then I think he should hear from me when I think he is insulting my intelligence.

I was in Manhattan on Saturday. The ONLY highlight of the day was the piping hot KState poms. My early prediction for '09 is that they will still be hot when we see them at Arrowhead. Even better, it will be early October which means no jackets.

Oh, and by the way, the colors of their outfits match the football players unis!

Of course it's a possibility, but given what I saw this season, I can't reasonably believe it will happen next year. I'd love for it to happen, and I'll be at the Jack every weekend cheering hard, but if fan support won games, we'd be playing for a BCS games. Also, I'd like to say something to the people (not the original poster im quoting) that think we won't get better unless our fans believe we will. We can wish in one hand and crap in the other. Which one fills up first? The problem isn't the fans, or the mentality that they carry...

If you can't see how the team improved over the season, perhaps your intelligence isn't actually being insulted.

The kicking game is much better, for the first time in the better part of a decade. Mahoney will only be a soph. Leonard Johnson set an NCAA record. The corners are much deeper and more athletic, though that's all I can say about the defense making strides.

The offense, on the other hand, is a hugely differnt story. If you don't think they're better, tell me the last time we had 626 total yards in a single game?

Tight ends? Catlett and Franklin are the best pair we've had in at least fifteen years--and I hear that Hammerschmidt is in Franklin's mold--only "bigger (6-5 260) and more athletic".

Wide Receivers: The best corps I've seen in the last thirty years might have been Danielson-Blythe-Whitver etc. This group rivals them, and with everyone back except Sumrall, should be even better. And the staff is working at bringing in more speed. that's an understatement, by the way.

Offensive Line:
The weakness of the offense, but by the end of the season, they were at least passable (no pun intended). Only one player graduates, and two starters were freshmen. These guys are a whole lot more athletic than the units that were trotted out from say, '02-'06, and a couple of players have star potential.

Running Backs:
Alexander Robinson might be the best Cyclone back since Ennis Haywood. That's been a while, you realize. And even that said, if rumors are true, at the least A Rob will have plenty of company on the field with players coming off of redshirts.

Quarterback:
Jerome Tiller is a bright spot in that we'll have a capable backup, not the case for at least ten years. And as far as Austen is concerned, he looks to me like the best quarterbacl we've had since Seneca Wallace, who sets a very high standard, indeed. And Austen might actually surpass him. I've been impressed not only with his arm and legs, but with the poise he shows in the pocket, and leadership on the field.

So I have to say that if you read this and still feel that your intelligence is being insulted...well, maybe you should think very carefully about that. Because it's not only apparent, but obvious that this team is making strides, and better than it was when Gene Chizik took over the program. Better than it has been for several years.

And the defense will follow.

It will be better in 2009 or 10 and 11 will be long years.

That is what Bill Callahan tried to do. It followed with Kevin Cosgrove.

Fortunately, it won't be the same defense next year as this season. These things change, you know. :skeptical:

Oh good heavens, am I tired of the negative crapola.
