The way too early '09 prediction thread

Here's the silver lining from my perspective: The difference between a good year and bad year is so small that it's amazing. History shows that most teams that have a breakout year suffered several close losses the previous year. I think we'll improve enough by next year to turn at least half of those close losses into close victories.

Our offense should be at least as good next year, but hopefully better with an improved offensive line, an experienced quarterback, and a new weapon in the backfield (Bo). Our defense was so poor this year that it would be hard not to improve at least some. I'm confident our coaches will continue to bring better athletes into the program. Finally, I think the attitude in our program will continue to be excellent. It's amazing how great the attitude was through this very difficult season.

If we play the same defensive scheme, three or four wins. We are in a big hole. Our only low tier neighbors are KSU and Colorado and they beat us this year.

If Greene stays it is because the boosters bought his grades. That guy is DUMB.

This is a thread about how good WE'LL be next year, and you have to pick on a college kid and accuse him of something you know nothing about? I know at least one person who he is smarter than and he happens to have a RED COMBINE as his avatar.

It would be nice if our fans cared more about the success of OUR team, than tearing down someone else, for goodness sakes.

I suppose you'd think the same thing about him if he were on our team, right?

And, by the way, I say 8,9 wins easy next year. Our coaching staff has more talent than has ever been on the field and next year will be a Cyclone year! Hawks can't intentionally flood their field to slow us down when the game is in Ames!

I think we can beat Army, but the Kent State away game may be tough using our present defensive scheme. They hit 80% of their passes against us. So does everyone else.

Kent State loses Edelman for next year. I think they'll be one of our 4 wins. Maybe its wishful thinking that we'll end this god-awful road losing streak there.

Someone needs to bump this thread in May, June, July and August respectively. I said in November of 2006 sitting on the top row of section G in Jack Trice station that it would take at least 3 year from that point to build a offense and defensive line that were Big 12 caliber. So far my prediction is obvious and true. The last year of Cyclone football will be another sad one.

We have a mountain to climb if you think it will be next year. Our best defense was against Iowa. The least we allowed since then was 28 points to Colorado.

3-9, 1-7 with wins over NDSU, Kent St and Colorado.

Iowa will have no offense next year, but they will have a good defense if they can find some decent defensive tackles. ISU wont beat Army because ISU could barely beat Army in 2005. No way we get a B12 road win or the neutral game at Arrowhead. I could easily see us losing at Kent St too. CU is the only B12 win.

The defense is just horrid and there is no way they are going to get that much better by next year. Plus, we are not exactly young on defense either, we only started ONE freshman on D today. Mike Marry will probably start at MLB from day 1. Butler at safety will help, but where is the pass rush? We really needed DJ Marshall last year.

The potential for 6 wins is there, but it wont happen. Why? Because we are ISU. I'm being honest and I'm gonna get killed on this but our coaching staff's lack of common sense is amazing. Our inability to catch a punt for example. Why did R.J. Summral never field punt? He did it for most of the 2005 season and did it well! Instead we have used Todd Blythe to fair catch it or Mike O'Connell to muff it. I really, really want to cheer for O'Connell too. If not RJ, why not Leonard Johnson?

If ISU doesn't get a bowl game next year, 2016 will be the next chance. 2010 and 2011 have no chance with our schedule and 2011 will probably be Chizik's last season. That means 2012, 2013 are most likely rebuilding years with a new coach and than 2014 and 2015 we have UT and OU again. I'm sorry if this is too much for some of you, but I'm being realistic and we are screwed.

I know it's way too soon, but with the 2008 season now over, it's that time again to look ahead to next season. We lose no NFL caliber players, and return quite a few experienced starters. If we can muster up an average defense, we will go to a bowl game. Right now, the defense is holding the rest of the team back. I expect the running game to be improved next year, not only because Bo Williams will be playing, but also because the O-Line should be better I hope.

My MVPs for next year:
Offense- Austen Arnaud, he should get more publicity next year now that the Big 12 will probably lose most of it's star QBs. I expect a big year out of him, and want to see improvement.
Defense- D-Line, somebody has got to step up and get pressure on the QB, if we don't we are doomed.

This is just a rough prediction for next year's games:

North Dakota State W- We should drill them in this game, and I would like to see the defense making some 3 and outs, not just turnovers.

Iowa * - This one's a toss up, could go either way. If Greene's back we'll be in trouble. I would expect Iowa to be favored by 7 going into this one.

at Kent State W- I expect to win this one by at least 3 touchdowns. We end the road losing streak here.

Army W- Again, expect to win this by 3+ TDs. If any of the 3 "easy" non-conference games are close, that would be a bad sign.

Kansas State W- gotta get out on the right foot in conference play, K-State will have a first year coach and QB, so I think we should be able to win this one.

@Kansas L- this will be a high scoring game, but since Reesing will be back and it's on the road, we will probably lose.

Baylor * - This might be the most important conference home game as it would be a telling sign of how we would do the rest of the way. If we win it would be huge for our team. I don't know if we will be able to stop their offense, since they torched us this year.

@Nebraska L- I don't see us winning this one, we haven't won in Lincoln for forever, and Nebraska returns a bowl caliber team next year.

Texas A&M * - Another toss up, if the defense can make stops, we will win. Remember '05.

Oklahoma State L- Okie State's offense will probably be too much for the defense to handle. We will probably get crushed again.

Colorado W- Defense will be key once again, since CU has one of the weakest offenses in the Big XII. Seniors will come out with intensity which will propel us to a win. I think we will win close.

@Missouri L- Mizzou will still be too tough for us to handle, we lose by more than two TDs.

That would make at least 5 wins, so that's how many wins I'll be happy with. But if things go our way, I could see us going 8-4 which would be a miracle. We have to take advantage of the weak south teams next year. If we don't take advantage of it, I don't know if Chizik will be around much longer.

What do you all think?

Our Defense doesn't improve, because at this point, I see no reason to think they will. We win one more game because we get a late turnover against KState or aTm. AA and the rest of the offense will have a great year. I just don't see us stopping anyone enough to give us a win.

Lets face it, we lost to probably 2 of the 3 worst big 12 north teams ever, problem was, we were the worst team of the 3. Good luck next year. My wife is trying to convince me to find another team right now. I'm thinking, what she has to offer is better than the Cyclones right now. Even though I did meet her at ISU.

EDIT: oh yeah, I just wanted to add, it really sucks being an ISU fan. IT REALLY SUCKS.

I'm thinking of joining the Coe or Wartburg camp. Pretty sure Wartburg could beat ISU, I mean they have Yordi at QB.

Yeah, I'm with others here in saying 2-10 again or 3-9. Can't really see any reason to predict otherwise, and I've learned very quickly here, year by year, to never expect improvement.

I predicted 4 or 5 wins for this season. I'm stunned we only got 2!

Our defense is light years from competing in the toughest conference in the nation. Therefore I'll say 3 wins for next season, might get 5, but not likely.

If CyforPresident is correct and we don't go bowling for the next 8 years then I understand now why my dad gave up season tickets back in the late '80's after 13 years.

I will say this though and it gives me hope, Gene is bringing in some great talent, we've seen it from our young players this season. I hope we have the patience.
