The rules vary from NCAA to NFHS...

Remember, player control (defined as holding or dribbling a live ball inbounds) is a component of team control and has different implications within the rules.

So what is TEAM CONTROL... (see chart below) ?

View attachment 17891

THROW-INS

Starting in 2011-12 season the NFHS considers a TEAM to be in CONTROL during a throw-in.

  • This NFHS change means there are no free throws awarded for common fouls committed by the team inbounding the ball while in the bonus.
  • There is no change in NCAA rules pertaining to this area. NCAA recognizes team control during a throw-in.
  • A team inbounding the ball is permitted to control in ball in the back-court without a violation as this rule does not affect backcourt, three second violations, traveling / dribbling, and the alternating-possession throw-in rules.
FREE THROWS

Whenever a foul is committed by a member the team in control (Team Control Foul) ...

  • A TEAM CONTROL foul is ruled.
  • No free-throws are awarded to the offended team.
  • Team control fouls do count toward the bonus.

So basically, the inbounds play at the end of the game was a TEAM CONTROL FOUL BY OSU. The OSU player that fouled Babb did not have control of the ball, so no Player Control Foul in this case. The NCAA Rules recognizes the inbounds play as the inbounding team as have team control of the ball. So when the OSU fouled Babb while the ball was being inbounded, this resulted in a TEAM CONTROL FOUL and this foul counts against the total team fouls but does not result in FT's for ISU.

Just my 2 secs and 20 minutes of Google Searching...

I think that the only way a team should have possession of a ball is if they have the ball physically in their hands. If the ball is passed or shot by a player it should no longer be in that teams possession and it should be a loose ball. "Player control" IMO means that the player physically has the ball in his hands. Also whoever created the rule that no free throws are rewarded for player control fouls should be banned from joining any rules committees. A foul is a foul is foul. It would be so much easier for everyone.

If it would of been a offensive charge call would there have been free throws?

This is the least of my worries with officiating at the moment. Here are my main concerns:

1) Professionalism: No over the top, over exaggerated charging or blocking calls or any calls for that matter. The pose the ref makes after a charge call in a tie game in the last minute should be the same as the pose if it's a 20 point game in the 1st half.

2) Early whistles: The game is too fast for the officials so they anticipate illegal contact. When that contact never comes they look ridiculous.

3) Late whistles: Once again the game is too fast for the college officials, so they can't process what they've seen. If they miss, they miss it. One late whistle leads to the never ending cycle of make up calls and foul evening for the rest of the game and sometimes they don't have a chance to get it evened back up, such as last night in the 2nd half and one team gets screwed and it just looks terrible, especially to neutrals.

Some have said that the foul on Babb put us in the bonus (I didn't think so, but I wasn't counting, just remember not seeing the "bonus" on the TV scoreboard until after the foul). If we were in the bonus, shouldn't that have led to free throws, regardless of the player control rule? I thought that was why the guy shot free throws on Clyburn's foul.

Clyburn's foul was a loose ball (team control is lost when a shot is attempted). Babb's foul was team control and no shots are awarded on offensive fouls. You don't get free throws for a charge (player control), you don't get free throws for a moving screen (team control), etc.

And games would take so much longer. Heck, if a foul is a foul is a foul, maybe they should just get rid of the bonus and double bonus. What significance does the 8th foul have over the 2nd? Then we can have 3 hour games which are boring as hell to watch because they have no flow.

Moving screen? Free throws.
Hook? Free throws.
Take a charge? Free throws.

Yay for watching a game where more free throws are attempted than field goals.

And if the ball is shot, there is no team control. That's why you get free throws if you're in the bonus and get shoved on a rebound.

Once that ball was in the air there, neither team was in control of the possession, same as a rebound.

The applicable rules straight from the NCAA rulebook:

Rule 7 Section 6 Article 1:
Section 6. Throw-inArt. 1. The throw-in shall start and the throw-in team shall have team control when the ball is at the disposal of a player entitled to the throw-in.

Rule 10 Section 1 Penalty Section 1 Part A
PENALTY: (Section 1) Personal fouls apply toward the team-foul total and toward an individual’s five personal fouls for disqualification. The ball shall be put back in play by the offended player/team as follows:
a. A throw-in (no free throws) nearest to where the foul occurred for:
1. Each common foul before the bonus rule takes effect.
2. A player-control personal foul.
3. A team-control foul.

More free throws would be shot only if it was on the 7th foul or later. The fouls would be treated the same as a "on the floor" foul, not a shooting foul. You are acting like every single hook, charge, and moving screen would be the 8th 9th and 10th fouls of the half. The bonus and double bonus would stay the same. And who cares if the games are longer. Most sporting events don't take an hour and 45 minutes sorry to say. Football takes right around 3 and a half hours with 20 seconds in between every play. That is boring! Adding 4 extra free throws per half per team isn't going to add an hour to the game sorry to say.
