Going to get really cold this weekend. Sunday night they are forecasting a low of -24 and a high Monday of -14 in the Minneapolis area.
Minnesota governor Dayton called off school for the entire state on Monday.
Why do I live up here?

you should move down here to balmy Madison, only going to be -12/-22 on Monday!

sometime back in the 90s when it got this cold, my dad showed us the boiling water trick, was pretty cool for the 8 seconds we could handle being outside.

They said on the radio that Minnesota could see -60 with the windchill. -30 to -50 here in IA

You forgot wind chills -50 to -55° (at least in the SE MN).

It's the coldest airmass seen since Feb. 1-3, 1996. That's when the lowest temp was -34° and wind chill was -57°. (For Rochester, MN)

Minimum air temps from 2/2/96 shown below.

Gotta ask.

What's the boiling water trick?

I remember that week of weather in 1996. I had graduated from ISU in December and started working with a company in NW Iowa in a training program. I got up one morning for an early shift, it has snowed the night before and my car was covered, and the thermometer said -25 when I left the house. The wind blew something fierce that whole day and next night, I don't remember what the wind chill could have been. I haven't seen a temp that low since.

I know the house I was renting was damn cold.

Is it really going to be colder than the airmass back in Jan of 09? I remember a number upper 20's to 40 below zero temps in Iowa during the middle of that month.

The "boiling water trick" is pretty neat. It insta-freezes when you throw it into the air. After several tries, I've found that a Pyrex measuring cup with about a 1/2 cup to 2/3 of a cup works best. It does have to be damn cold out, though. It doesn't work when it's "only" 0 or a few degrees below. Gotta get to like -15 or -20 for it to really work well.

Maybe not for the lows, but for high temps and the average daily temperature, yes.

That mid Jan 09 cold snap was a High pressure scenario with clear sky, light wind and it let temperatures rebound to an extent during the day. The average daily temperature on Monday (at least in my area) will be colder than the 09 spell by about seven degrees.

The scenario for Monday will have a decent wind with it so wind chills will by far be the coldest since 1996.

yep, that's exactly what Dad did. Measuring glass and ran outside. We have it on VHS somewhere. Could swear it's from '96, too. I remember that - we were driving home from the babysitter's and the little temp gauge in the car dropped to -24 and I remember thinking that's the coldest I've ever seen. And haven't seen it lower since then!

Cold weather always brings out the wussies.

I was in International Falls back in February 1996 and remember looking at the thermometer on the window in the restaurant of the Holiday Inn and it was -50 (without wind chill).

Suck it up I say. Better than 90+ degrees any day.

90+ sucks too (though this would be closer to the 105F + days with 90% humidity), but it sucks to be a farmer in this. Everything is 10x harder. Water tanks freeze, milk freezes before you can get it to the calves, stuff doesn't start......gah, I'm glad I'm in an office this week!

In 1994 it got down to -28 or 30 sometime at the beginning of March one morning. Was a bit of a surprise as I remember it(was a calm clear night). I drove a Chevy Lumina back then and it was sitting outside that night. I didn't remember it being real bad when I walked out(always is worse when the wind is blowing). The Lumina turned over really slow, but fired right off. Thank god for fuel injected cars when it gets that cold. Those of us who remember carburetor's know what a pain they could be when it gets that cold.
