2005. I know the score doesn't show it but ISU struggled mightily against Illinois State. The following week we gave top 10 Iowa a thorough ass whoopin.

Of course maybe that team is a bad one to bring up because they had a bad tendency to underachieve.

His stats weren't even that good and ISU overpursued all day. Tough player and made some plays but it wasn't like he just carved up the D.
UNI was only in the game because of his mobility. Every play came off his ability to create chaos. I don't normally like singling players out but Bickham playing over Lewis is a big time head scratcher for me. The coverages broke down too much and safeties were letting people behind them. That's unacceptable especially in the red zone.

Yeah ISU's D was good yesterday due to the talent but not because they were sound. If Spears Bailey etc. keep him in front and contained instead of flushing him out ISU has more sacks.

They were far from perfect which is a good thing considering the potential.

I do want to emphasis how impressed I was with the young QB though. He will be a good one if he retains the spot for 4 years.

You say we were good because of talent, not because they were sound.
Give the kid credit. The defense front was generally sound, but the QB was talented enough at scrambling to overcome it. A few plays we weren’t, but you’ll never have perfection.

It’s been awhile since we faced an effort by a QB that scrambled to extend plays as patiently as he did. I was more disappointed with the defensive backfield than the front.

Is it possible to rewatch the game via the interwebs?

A loss would have sucked bad but I still didn't feel like it was as bad as many think and want to check it out.

Didn't say UNI's QB doesn't deserve credit. Stop making **** up.

ISU overpursued and took bad angles all day which are very correctable, but would have had a better chance at a more positive impact.

Lots of (hopefully) first game mistakes. ISU dominated the box score, it was just one of those weird games where that didn't translate. 1.1 yds/rush allowed is dominate, the score shouldn't have been close. Disagree with both replays that did not overturn wrong calls on the field in 2 UNI touchdowns. The team still won so it is a character building game. At the end of the year, it will only show as a win in the win loss column.

Why did you just make something up and so frequently resort to fallacies? I didn’t accuse you having said he didn’t deserve credit, just as no one is also calling for the track meet false dilemma you created.

Perhaps you’re not familiar with the expression “give x credit “. It’s a way of saying the it was more x than y, in this case more the UNI’s QB’s talent than the DL not playing sound. He frequently individually beat guys in the correct position.

I can't believe people are still flogging themselves over this. You got the win. Lighten up.

You can't infer much about the season from any one game, especially the way the coaches called this one so close to the vest.

If you need a blowout win to justify your trash talk with other fans that's a you problem.

ISU is 1-0 and that's all the team cares about.

This guy gets it

The talent gap between top level FCS and most FBS teams isn’t that large. Most FCS guys are either late bloomers or were over looked due to size. Good example was McElvain yesterday. If he’s 6’2 not 5’11 he’s probably playing P5 football.

Good FCS programs have winning cultures built and aren’t scared of playing anyone. UNI is a tougher first game test than if we played a crappy team from another P5 conference. They are used to winning and come in with nothing to lose.
Agree the top FCS teams would probably beat many of the FBS teams from conferences like the MAC.

They didn’t score a TD in regulation did they (the UNI QB/offense)?

Brock-- not a pocket passer. The coaching staff trying to make him a pocket passer this season, has already backfired.

Utilize him for his strengths-- rolling out, improvising, pump-faking, scrambling. Sorry to say, if they repeat this ploy, he'll be a sitting duck w/ Iowa's defense
