I had a board game called Superstar Baseball, I got back in 1978, I think. Had enough cards of all-time all-stars to make four teams, so I put together a league and played a season (my little brother was supposed to run two of the teams, but it was mostly a solo effort). Bought an expansion pack to make two more teams (some were doubling up from the original set, like two Willie Stargells and two Jim Palmers; some were odd choices for all-time all-stars, like Don Money or Toby Harrah or Andy Messersmith) and played a few more seasons. Man, that was fun.
I also had a similar NFL board game called Paydirt. I played a whole Houston Oilers season, making up my own system to assign plays/stats to players (the game sheets were just by team, not by player). I still had the stats/game stories I wrote from that season until I finally threw them away a year or two ago, lol.
Around 35 years ago I bought a board game called Statis-Pro baseball, that used cards with random numbers and various play results instead of dice or spinners. That had player cards from 1988; I later bought the set from 1991 (being a Twins fan at the time) and even later, a set of historical teams. Again, I had a lot of fun, but having a family growing up at the time really cut into my playing time. I still have that game downstairs, by the way.
And I bought a Stratomatic baseball game for my old Mac around 20 years ago, with the 1978 season. It was fun, but I couldn’t get very far without losing interest/getting involved with other things.
Yeah, I have lots of good memories with sports games.
