Steele

Flynn just off the top of my head, and Tiller last year because he wouldn't have been the starter. But how often is ISU in the situation where they have more than one good QB? Or even one for that matter.

I thought flynn was benched mid-season. Maybe I'm wrong.

Flynn may have been the starter in 2003, but he was sharing time with Chris Love and Wade Terry. Flynn started the season in 04, but Meyer took over mid season.

Al_4_State, don't throw me into this argument. I will agree that before a starter was named after fall camp I was pulling for JB. But, since that time you can't find one post where I have not been pro-Cyclones.

It's pretty cut and dried.

Jared is the #1 entering the 2012 season. He only loses his starting spot if he sucks. That's normal for any position on the field.

Yeah, you've been pretty good since then. I (and a lot of others) felt like you were overwhelmingly pro JB over the past couple years and were (at one time) a good example of what I was pointing out.

I know that most of us really couldn't care less who the QB (or any position for that matter) was, so long as they give us the best chance of winning.

UNI (343.3 yds/game, 16.6 pts/gm - FCS) SJ win
Iowa (387.6, 23.3 - FBS schedule #6/#2T D) SJ win
UConn (366.7, 24.3 - #2/#5) SJ win
Tejas (315.3, 23.3 - #1/#2T) SJ loss
Baylor (477.5, 35.7 - #9#9) SJ loss
Misery (382.3, 23.5 - #3/#4) SJ loss
A&M (386.5, 28.7 - #5/#8) mostly JB loss
Tech (485.6, 39.3 - #10/#10) JB win
Kansas (516.4, 43.8 - #11/#11) JB win
Okie State (445.7, 25.8 - #8/#6) JB win
Oklahoma (383.2, 22.8 - #4/#1) JB loss
K State (398.8, 27.8 - #7/#7) JB loss

So with Jantz leading the team they beat an FCS team with a good D, and the #2/#5 and #6/#2(tie) FBS D's on the schedule. They lost to the #1/#2T, #3/#4 and #9/#9 D's on the schedule. All three loses were more than one possession difference.

With Barnett leading the team they beat the #8/#6, #10/#10 and #11/#11 D's on the schedule and lost to the #4/#1 and #7/#7 D's on the schedule. One of the two losses were more than a one possession loss.

I threw out the A&M game because both QB's played significant time in that game.

I did this because I was curious. Draw your own conclusions.

You'll get no argument from anyone that regardless of these numbers, SJ lead the nation and probably set a record in INTs in the 1st qtr/1st half of games.

I think JB will enter spring camp as the #1. Jantz will continue to work and push JB as much as he can. Both QBs should improve because of this competition. JB, SJ, SR, and Rohach will all get a chance to show what they can do.

I think they will also take SJs in-game decision and ball security making into account. At the end, if they think Jantz gives us a better chance to win, they will probably start him.
JB has made pretty good decisions since he has been starting. If Franklin is the new OC, JB has the leg up on system knowledge again.

Both guys are 3-3 as starters. Barnett gets his chance to pull ahead in the bowl game. We'll see if Herman is there and how that affects everyone as well.

Without looking at the official number of snaps, I'd guess they played about the same number of snaps this season...

Steele threw for more TD's (9-6)
Steele throw for more yards (1322-1178)
Steele throw more INT's (9-6)
Steele won the same amount of games as Jared (3)
Steele had one less INT than TD's, Jared had the same number of TD's and INT's

I cannot find the fumble stats. Steele had the dropped snap against Iowa, the fumble on the play against Uconn that he recovered himself I believe (same play he hurt his foot), the bad handoff to White against Texas, the fumble against Baylor that led to a TD, and the 2 fumbles against Missouri. Jared had the botched handoff to Woody against KU, the terrible fumble against OSU inside the 10 yard line, (another fumble later in the game that our offensive lineman recovered, actually I think there were a total of 3 that he put on the ground but we recovered 2 of them), and the botched handoff to White against OU. I think I might be forgetting one more.

Basically, IMO, Jared didn't take care of the ball all that much better than Steele did. Tech's defense blows, KU's defense BLOWS, and OSU's D hasn't really stopped anyone all year. OU's D is good and then shut him down. The running game worked much better with Jared, because he ran the read better and had healthy legs. But the passing game struggled I thought. He barely completed half his throws and the down field element was virtually eliminated with Steele on the bench.

Steele has more talent and upside and I hope he gets a chance to battle for the job again, when healthy. No question he's gotta become a better decision maker. He's an exciting talent that can make plays with his arm. Throws too many picks but that can be corrected. People forget that Sage and Seneca threw more picks in their careers than touchdowns.

Whats your reasoning for more talent and upside?

Al_4_State during that though, some were overwhelmingly rooting Jantz and about 100% were rooting against Tiller. I stood out because I was probably the only one pulling for JB. Once it was decided by the coaches, no need to discuss it anymore.

Both JB and SJ have a body of work now. SJ had the edge coming in because he was older and had JUCO experience. They both now have D1 experience against the toughest schedule in the country. So be rest assured that CPR and company will evaluate them both and when the pre-spring depth chart comes out it will be unbiased.

Nailed it. Except I believe Rohach wont really be apart of the competition. Barnett will enter spring as the starter just like Tiller last year.

Coming from someone who likes both SJ and JB, I would say this is what Jantz brings to the table over Barnett:
-Bigger arm
-Better escapability in the pocket (Barnett is better down field runner)
-Indefinable ability to make ridiculous clutch plays

Barnett is more accurate, a better down the field runner, and is pretty solid at making clutch plays.

It's damn near a wash between these two.

Whats your reasoning for more talent and upside?

I don't have any factual numbers. And I have said upside as well, but I'm not sure that's really the proper phrase. What I saw in Steele though, was that he had a stronger arm, especially on the run. He wasn't Seneca, but was very Seneca-esque in his ability to break from the pocket and on the run, still throw a strong accurate pass to a receiver. Also I felt his scrambling ability was a lot better than JB. It seemed when Jantz decided to run, he was off and was very good at getting a lot of positive yards. It could very much be the defenses he was facing at the time, but in the Iowa game, he was very elusive and had some big scrambles for us. Those are two things that from my experience as an ISU fan, are a very big deal at ISU. No matte how much someone tells me how awesome our offensive line is going to be, it always seems like we have a QB running for his life. So, imo, he seems to have more Big play potential.

That being said, let's put it in perspective. SJ's upside is all theoretical at this point. He was never able to put any of our theories into real practice on the field, because he gave the ball away way too often. I dont' think potential, "up side" is ever enough to take away what JB did on the field this year. Hurt or not, we aren't Bowling without JB. I'm not sure I'd like to see an "open" QB competition either to start the year. IMO, I give Jantz his chances, but I also feel it should be JB's job to lose, Steele's to win, as opposed to wiping the slate clean and starting over like this year never happened.

Maybe Steele's foot was hurt a lot worse than what everyone really knew about. It definitely seemed to hurt his scrambling, but he wa making bad decisions before his foot was hurt as well as after.Throwing into double coverage and not holding the ball with two hands when being tackled didn't have that much to do with a bad foot. And has been said though, JBs turnovers weren't any better, maybe Steele is just a really unlucky guy.

EDIT: And I just want to add, I'm not one who has a preference for either QB. I'm in with the ISU fans and who brings us the best chance to win. I like both of them. It's nice to have 2 capable guys at QB for Iowa State, I hope we can keep it that way. Imagine if we wouldn't have had Barnett.

I'm not worried at all. Both guys have shown a lot, but have some warts.

I'm not worried about either one. They're both talented, mobile, and have played well in crunch time. I trust that whomever the coaching staff designates as our number one will get the job done just fine.

The more I read about Tony Franklin the more I like him. I think he could do great things for Jantz.

Don't get me wrong I have no problems with Barnett being the starter. I just feel Jantz has the ability to be far better.

Yeah, I added Rohach to the list at the last second because they will give him some reps in fall practice. I am pretty positive he will redshirt but you never know.

As for the upside argument:

Steele has the physical ability to make spectacular plays.
His somewhat cavalier style also led to some big turnovers.
After he was injured, his passing accuracy got worse. There were passes that were straight shots that he floated high, possibly because his plant foot was still hurting. He was more tentative when scrambling and looked like he was forcing everything.

If Steele is %100 healthy, he has the physical tools to win back the starting job. His decision making and ball security have to improve though.

JBs strenghts are his decision making and execution. I don't remember too many times when JB has chucked it deep. Most of his passes are within 20 yards of the LOS which is where JB is best.
JB has done a great job of running the ball control offense this season and he is better on the read option.

I don't know who will be our starter next season, but it will be the QB who gives us the best shot at winning.

Either way, whoever is #2 will play at some point.

If Jantz doesn't make better decisions then no he wont be the starter next year.

But I feel he brings better size to the table. He has a stronger arm. He can put more velocity on the ball which is nice for a windy stadium. He is like Houdini in the pocket. He is one of the most clutch QB's I've seen(in limited action)

All of that and hes still completely raw. He hasn't been a QB nearly long as Barnett. More coaching and Jantz will just get better, where as Barnett has already been very coached up. Jantz has a far higher ceiling.

I don't really care if its Barnett or Jantz, whoever gives us the best possibility to win. I trust CPR on this one. The nice part is, IMO, we have two capable quarterbacks for the first time that I can remember. We are actually talking about what each one can do for us to win the game and not which one won't pee it away for us.
