Both JB and SJ have a body of work now. SJ had the edge coming in because he was older and had JUCO experience. They both now have D1 experience against the toughest schedule in the country. So be rest assured that CPR and company will evaluate them both and when the pre-spring depth chart comes out it will be unbiased.

Good point. We have now seen what they both can do. And both have strengths and weaknesses that are different from each other. However, because both have so much room for improvement, I think we will have another wide open competition during the Summer.

The one who starts the first game will probably be the one who makes the most improvement during the next year, not the one who did the best during this season.

However, I would expect the #2 to see plenty of playing time, either because of injury or lack of production from the #1. And it probably is more accurate to refer to them as 1A and 1B, much like this year, except maybe reversed next year.

I'd really like to see Steele Jantz start for these reasons:

1. He's been through so much just to make it here and stuck with it through so much adversity. That speaks to intent, desire and perseverance and to me sums up the Cyclone underdog mentality to a "T". This also applies to many or most Cyclone players, maybe just a little more to Jantz.
2. He's a Senior and has one last year to play. Barnett has three more.
3. When he's on, he looks like Tebow willing a win out there. Especially late in games. I think his come from behind wins early really helped the rest of the team build confidence they could do that.

For this to happen, he will have to make better throwing decisions and vastly improve ball security. And play four quarters on fire. For that to happen, he'll have to dig deep and see more of #1 above along with proving to himself and everyone else he is able to do so. And get and stay healthy as much as that is something he can control.



Count me in as rooting for him.



Ideally, I'd like to see both Barnett and Jantz see time next year. They've both clearly fought hard for the opportunity and done great things this year. Steele beat Iowa in OT for first time in a while and Barnett beat #2 OSU for first time ever. Both have 3 wins for the year.



Give me both showing improvement in ball handling skills for a better season Alex.

no offense, but I want to see them on the field first. Other than when Seneca was hear, all I've ever heard is how much better the Next QB coming in is going to be. I'm not saying we don't ahve some great guys coming in, but it just seems to be a common theme throughout football how the back-up, next guy, etc. is always going to be better than your current starter. There are a few exceptions to the rule, but not enough to ever just assume the next guy is the best guy.

Personally, I'd rather see the coaches play for the future and start Barnett or Richardson. Steele has one year left and only played half of this season. While true that his experience would grow as he played next year, he won't have anymore seasons to use it.

Barnett will be a Sophomore and Richardson will be a Freshman I believe since this year he was redshirting. Barnett has the same experience as Jantz going into next year. Plus 2 more years to play after next year. Richardson still has 4 years left to play.

I won't moan and complain if Jantz starts because I know at the time the coaches would think that he gives the best shot to win. And I won't need to be worried about them sticking with Jantz if he plays the same as he did in his losing streak because we saw this year the coaches are fine with benching a player and putting number 2 out there.

I know you got some longer and more detailed responses to this, but I would just say go re-watch the Iowa game. I just watched most of it again, and if you can't see the upside there I don't know what else can be said.

Flynn may have been the starter in 2003, but he was sharing time with Chris Love and Wade Terry. Flynn started the season in 04, but Meyer took over mid season.

The 04 QB situation still irks me a bit. Flynn and Meyer pretty much split snaps for the first 4-6 games. Meyer played fairly poorly, and Flynn won a few of the games on his own. Mac would still not name a starter. Meyer gets injured in the Texas A&M game and Flynn gets exclusive playing time. Flynn plays poorly but not really more poorly than Meyer had all year and immeadiately Flynn is benched for the rest of the year. It just seemed like Mac gave Meyer tons of chances but pulled the hook on Flynn as soon as he screwed up. I still contend Flynn would've ended up being a better QB, but playing on that 2003 team certainly didn't help him.

If you have ESPN3, go back and watch the the UCONN game. Aside from the 3 picks in 4 passes, look at the drive that he finally moves the ball. He completes a desperation pass to Money on a 3rd and forever. The pass was lofted (not thrown with good mechanics) and was put up for grabs. A solid D-Back has the 4th pick of Steele in the first half. Instead, Money bails SJ out and stops the bleeding. The D gets credit for the W against UCONN. While SJ pulls out the comeback, we were lucky to not be down 28-0 in the first 10 minutes.

I get loyalty, but stop blaming injury for SJs performance. Poor mechanics are his problem. What many call upside, I call inexperience. JB has played QB more extensively, he understands the position, he doesn't need to rely on improv to pull off what some here call "electric plays." JB clearly has more upside...although the SJ supporters will not see this....

He threw so many picks that he absolutely refused to throw the ball anywhere near the middle of the field. Part of that may have been play calling, I'm not sure. The first pass pick against A&M, you could certainly see his happy feet in the pocket, he looked like he had lost any confidence he might have had. Then to go 3 and out on the next two series spelled his end as the ISU qb...JB has seized the opportunity and taken the reins...and I'm ok with that.

Barnett has won some huge conference games to dig us out of a hole. TTech, Kansas, OSU. Jantz won some big non-conference games (although not as big in terms of ranking standards) UNI, Iowa, UConn. I think it comes down to the fact that Jantz hasn't played in a long while, JB has stepped it up, and Jantz was a turnover king. JB gets the start and all the playing time.

You can coach up Jantz and improve his mechanics. You can't coach endless talent to Barnett. Jantz has more upside.
