With the upcoming legalization of sports wagering in Iowa, does anybody have any recommendations on handicappers? There are a ton of them out there, some with pretty good records for past picks. Any thoughts?

Interesting. I have never believed in those services myself, but a ton of people must use them as it is a big business. Always figured the "Two for the Money" movie was fairly accurate. 50% of free callers for first tip get one team, the other half gets the other side. Company has 50% of callers thinking they are great out of the box and sign up. I mean, if you have such great insights on gambling, why spend money to hire staff, advertise, etc? You could easily make more just following your own advice if you know what the **** you are doing.

Personally, I like sports betting, but I just grind away using the anti-martingale system and it has worked well for me.

I work with a guy who is an inveterate gambler and gets all those "LOCK OF THE YEAR" type emails and stuff. He is totally gullible and signs up for these things all the time.

At work, this guy has made over $100k per year for 25 years, and his wife works too. His net worth after all this time is maybe $200k. So you can see how well the gambling has paid off.

That said, I want to put some $$ on O/U win totals this year LOL. Where do I sign up?

As someone who has paid for a single handicapping service for 5+ years I’ll tell you right now if you are not disciplined with bankroll management you will lose money. The biggest mistake I see from people who first enter this kind of market is doubling down when your service has a bad week or even month. The best handicappers in the world hit 57-59% long term, anyone that advertises higher is probably a fraud. Pick someone who’s been in the game for a long time and never plays more than 2-3 units on a single pick. Good luck!

Thoughts: if you’re in sports gambling other than to have fun and give yourself some rooting interests you don’t normally care about, don’t do it.

These services are usually no better at picking winners than any normal person, they’re just making a ton of money off people who buy their picks.

I would stray far from buying any services and just sick to making educated picks for yourself. A lot cheaper that way and personally, a lot more fun.

Plus there’s a ton of great free content out there from Odds Shark to The Action Network to Bet the Board podcasts. SBR Forum is a great place to go and read up on different opinions on games.

Just have fun and bet what you can. Think of it as a hobby, not a way to make money.
