Soccer and sex?

To me, soccer fans in the US are a lot like hipsters. Just doing it to be different.

Soccer is still more entertaining than baseball.
Absolutely

Yeah. That must be it. I love soccer, and follow it almost religiously....mostly because I want to be different.

If you think it is boring, fine. I think baseball (minus the Twins) is boring as hell. Football, too- minus ISU and the Vikings.

Here is what it comes down to- knowing about the individual players, team styles, all the gossip, etc etc. That is why we all love and follow ISU sports almost religiously! Not because we want to be different.

Hours of boredom, and at the end of the night there is a pretty high likelihood that nobody scores. Sounds about right.

Sounds like a lot of baseball games. 2 people playing catch for 3 hours with 3 minutes of action crammed in.

The only thing I have against soccer haters is the fact that they simultaneously profess they could care less about soccer while taking every opportunity they can find to hate on soccer.

The lady doth protesteth too much!

Having gone to a World Cup match in '94 in Chicago and one other friendly of England v. US team in 04 or something. The extent of my soccer experience. I can tell you that the only way those fans keep up their antics at the pace they do is by large amounts of cocaine. We partied with all these English guys (who flew to Chicago for a friendly mind you) into the late hours of the evening - my god those people party. I thought Dubuque people could party. That's amateur stuff. I have nothing but respect for soccer fans in other countries. Here - nah. For the record I was sans coke.

Since we're going down this hijacked path here is my analogy re: soccer in the States.

I love soccer. I played in HS and in college, and coached at the HS level. I love Manchester United. And I am never more passionate than when the USMNT plays in the World Cup. I think anyone who knows me would not dispute my soccer bona fides.

However, I see soccer in the States like Tim Tebow. People who love soccer (or love Tim Tebow) spend soooo much of their time telling other people why they should also love soccer (or Tim Tebow) that they end up having the opposite affect, and people end up hating soccer (or Tim Tebow) more than they would have had they never been told why soccer (or Tim Tebow) is the greatest thing in the history of the world.

In short, I think people hate "soccer guy" (or "Tim Tebow guy") more than they actually hate soccer (or Tim Tebow).

End rant.

+1
I've been a huge fan of soccer since 1987 and followed a lot of European soccer. I agree with your statement above. I always tell: if you like it, good, if not, that's fine. If someone asks me why he/she should like soccer, I'll just ask to watch. There will always be haters of the sports, same as women's basketball, NASCAR, etc.

Another thing is sometimes a lot of new soccer fans think that they know everything and they start to show-off by "mandating" the others to do certain things otherwise the others won't be regarded as "true fan", e.g. you have to pick a team to support, how to pick a team, etc. Absolutely annoying.

but you can't use your hands!!!!!

I DESPISE soccer. Mostly because it is taking too many kids away from Little League baseball. I get tired of seeing kids in my neighborhood kicking that damn ball in their backyard instead of playing wiffle ball. If I could put every soccer player and fan in a single spot and nuke them...I would (not serious, but you get the point).

Is it possible to call soccer boring but also be able to watch an entire baseball game and not be a hypocrite? I don't really get how soccer can be called boring, I get it can be low scoring, but the actual action is non-stop, unlike baseball, and even football although I love football.

My son picked soccer over t-ball this season because t-ball was so boring to him, and honestly it was pretty boring to watch too. But I can't really blame him, I think if he just got to be at bat constantly the whole game he'd like it better.

Why do people have soo much hate for a sport? I don't watch soccer. One of my kids plays soccer and I could not be prouder of the effort and how she has developed. I am a huge baseball fan and I sit and watch games into the late evening on tv. Teams I don't care for. BUT, I think I understand the game at a pretty high level so it makes it enjoyable to me. If you don't like baseball. Or you "hate" it then I don't think you understand it. Same for soccer. Golf. NBA. Wrestling. And on and on. At the end of the day if the kids in your neighborhood are playing soccer it's probably because they like it. Not because an overbearing parent decided that was what they should be doing.

I hate people who drink coffee because I don't drink coffee. I do not agree with those who carpool because I do not carpool. See same thing and pointless to argue.

I do hate the Hawkeyes and people that say they cheer for Iowa State except when they are playing ISU. Can we all agree on that. Of course we can't.

If I had a dime for every time I've heard this statement I'd have a ***** load of dimes. Usually it comes from small towns, like the one I came from. And it makes absolutely no sense. You're basically saying you despise the fact that kids are doing something they'd rather be doing and you wish they'd be doing something they don't want to do. Even if that were a rational thought (which it isn't), it makes no sense to blame the game itself.

D@mn you soccer for being so fun!
