Just proved again why NFL OT sucks, and he did the right thing. Instead of leaving the teams fate up to a coin toss he went for two and got it.
I don't think I've ever seen that in the NFL.

And yes they got a huge break, ref should never have blown the whistle.

God bless the Rat, he made a ballsy call and it paid off. What a fun game to watch. Great for the NFL.

I could really care less about that game, but what a rollercoaster of emotions...Jay fumbles (that sucks), Dobbins gets the ball(go ISU), ref blows the call(pure b.s.), Denver scores (don't deserve it), Shannahan goes for two (ballsy, much respect, still hope they don't make it, don't deserve it), Jay threads the needle and Royal makes a great catch(awesome).....whew!! Time for a nap.

I have no idea why I continue to watch sports when games are so frequently taken out of the players hands. That game was giftwrapped for the Broncos. Either somebody is really bad at their job or the fix was in. Since it happened twice in one game with the same official, I'm not sure which I believe.

Very ballsy call but in reality it's probably smart to take your chances with gaining 3 yards when you have momentum instead of a coin toss. It's funny though because had the Broncos got stopped people would be saying Shanahan is an idiot. Gotta love sports.

Disagree. The NFL needs to be tweaked. But I hate the college system for removing special teams from the equation (minus field goals). How different might the end of the game been yesterday without the punting game? Now I wouldn't mind if the NFL got rid of the sudden death aspect of the overtime. I think that would be an improvement.

nfl needs to go to the college system of overtime

They should adopt the AFL's overtime rules:

OVERTIME RULES

Overtime periods are 15 minutes during the regular season and the playoffs.
Each team gets one possession to score. If, after each team has had one possession, one team is ahead, that team wins. If the teams are tied after each has had a possession, the next team to score wins.

That does seem like the most fair way to do it. What I don't like about college is that the punting & kick off game are taken out of the picture. Obviously in the NFL, the team that gets the ball first wins something like 70 - 75% of the time, which isn't fair at all.

This seems like a good balance and the most fair option.

I think it should be like college. Tweak it so there are kick offs instead of starting at the 40 or what not. Make a team return the kick and drive down the field to score. If they fail they kick off to the other team and they have their chance to score.

The Chiefs successfully did it against the Raiders a few years ago in **** Vermeil's last season. But yeah, pretty rare and very exciting, even if it was the result of a bad call by the ref.

The College OT is like Penalty Kicks in Soccer

nfl needs to go to the college system of overtime

IMO the college system for OT stinks and has very little to do with how the game is played during the 60 minutes of regulation.

I agree with another poster that the game should be played like the NFL system, but each team getting an opportunity to score.

I don't know why more coaches (college or NFL) don't do what Shanahan did. If given the chance to win or lose the game on 1 play- I'd take it especially if I had a solid offense.

Randy Cross was gushing about Shanny going for the win at home, and how he had never seen it done before....but didn't Vermiel (?sp) do it with the Chiefs just a few years ago?

Think how much OT games would impact fantasy football if the NFL had college rules! I'm not for it, but chuckled at the thought.

They should keep it the same, just let each team have atleast 1 possession. That way you still get all the special teams goodness, and both teams get an equal shot at winning.
