All, a friend of mine is a amateur crime writer and asked me what I thought were the shady bars of Ames (past or present ) I wasn't sure what to tell her since most of my watering holes are pretty mellow. Any thoughts ? I figured I would post and get some input. You can define shady as you like and post what's fit for the public's consumption ( what's not, etc you can send me a message via the profile)
That's for any info

I'm not sure what the definition of shady is in bar terms, but Lumpy's is probably the best dive bar I ever went to in Ames. The only crimes were public urination.

When I was in school (78-82), there was a bar downtown called Mister B's. The employees would take ALL your money, and most would not give you a drink in return. Not sure why we kept going back.:wink0st:

I can't think of any bar in the past that I would consider shady. Plenty of dives, but being a dive does not make a bar shady.

Dangerous Curves was shady. I always wondering what kind of drug tonnage moved in and out of that place on a weekly basis.

Dangeous Curves circa 2007 (at least by the insecure glance over the shoulder of every guy that walked in there it must have been shady) The could also just be feeling guilty. As for bars that had a impression of crime... I cannot think of a one in Ames. There were some shady bars in Des Moines though.

I agree with the Sips comment, it was a criminal act just walking in there. I sure crimes were happening AFTER people left Element but that was mostly due to the standard creepy 40 year old there to pick up college girls.

Do the Habhabs still own any bars in Ames? If so, start there.

Any scary places in rural Story County where a well-dressed young professional is going to be mistreated by the staff and customers? I love those kind of places.

I had heard a few things about the old Trade Winds before it closed
about after hour parties and paid companionship

Tradewinds hired busty female help, to be sure, but I never heard about any pay-for-play, and we used to go there every Friday night with the softball crowd. Could have happened, though.

Deano's is a total dive, and always made me feel icky to walk into, but I don't know if it was shady. Only ever went a few times.
