Rhoads ices NIU kicker

You guys missed Rhoads running towards the line judge on the 3rd kick, just before the snap, he made a huge motion towards the line judge, which the kicker saw...just before the ball was placed for his kick.

Interestingly, on the three kicks their kicker actually got succesively closer to making the field goal each time...the first kick hit a lineman in the backside, the second kick was very wide right, and the third kick was barely pulled left and actually looked good from the TV angle behind the kicker.

They were ripping Wittingham ( I think thats the Utah coach) this morning on Mike and Mike for this. They want a rule change because they think it is silly and makes the game look bad.

actually the 2nd kick hit the right upright

Don't you ice a kicker to throw them our of their rhythm? He failed pretty miserably at that, the kicker stayed true to form on everyone.

No, you ice a kicker to get into their head. That's why it's called right before the snap, so they kick the ball. If they make the kick it becomes an annoyance because they then have to make the kick for a second (or third) time. If they miss the kick, it begins to resonate in their head to the point where they're thinking more about the miss than they are making the next kick.

What I really liked was that he called the two and still had one more time out left. You could see the NIU kicker out there thinking, ok, he is going to let me get all set up and call timeout again.

While we're talking about kickers, anyone notice how low Mahoney's PATs were? They were going through the middle of the uprights. Those things need to be higher than the posts. Looked like with minimal penetration, they could have been blocked.

I caught that, CPR made a couple of fake runs at the line judge as the kicker was lining up for the 3rd attempt. Good Stuff

The one after the 1st TD wasn't low. He hit it as they all should be hit. Looked like a wedge shot immediately high off the foot.

The rest were like last year and if he keeps that up....yes some will be blocked.

How can you possibly think Rhoads icing a kicker during the game could have any impact on time spent practicing special teams?

I agree with you. The post made no sense. What does he expect? A kicking clinic right in the middle of the game? I thought the timeouts were great coaching and shows that having a smart staff can have a direct impact on the game.

Re: Rhoads ices UNI kicker

By the way I'm pretty sure you can't call 2 timeouts in a row, at least its that way in the pros.
Correct. You can call multiple timeouts in a row in college, but not in the pros.

Good kickers can not be iced, but bad kickers can be.
