...I was hoping to do some umping and reffing in the area and was wondering is anyone had any connections for such or, better yet, needed someone in either capacity.

Thanks for any info!

I would google search the schools within the radius that you are looking for and call the AD's at those schools. Most districts are always looking for umps/refs, especially for jr. high/freshman/jv games...

Best thing you can do is get in touch with the parks and recreation departments in Urbandale, Clive, West Des Moines, etc. and talk to them about being a referee. They pay something totally ridiculous like 39 dollars/game. They limit the number of games you can do in a week but still if you can get 4 games over a a couple nights, thats an extra 150 a week!!!

Are you a student at ISU? Randy Heimerman, who helps run the officials for all intramurals, is also a collegiate and HS referee (he does many early games for ISU hoops, and Big XII and MVC hoops games as well) and is a HS football ref. He pulls some of his best refs from intramurals in those sports and helps coordinate them with multiple games (I used to do one or two football games per week and at least a tourney or several games each week for hoops season)... Randy would be a good place to start. He has connections with schools all around the area for refs of his.

If you get certified for ASA slow pitch umping it's like $22 a game or something, usually 4 games a night in the Des Moines area. Don't know what it takes to do that but I've been tempted to try it because it's not that hard.

You might also contact Garry Greenlee in ISU Recreation Services. Garry used to do scheduling for a couple of the central Iowa area high school conferences, at least for baseball/softball. Don't know if he still does or not, but along with Randy, would be a good contact for you.
