I’m new to CF but wanted to get everyone’s thought on thepotential of Redshirts in the 2015 class
Previous threads discussed Bowmen competing day one??? Is CJLdown on Horner and Harris or not committed to the 6-2? A redshirt on bowmanlets her adjust and saves a year of eligibility
OH hitters look solid with Kuhrt and Capezio……….is theyneeded they could move Conaway outside since they are deep at middle………..any thoughtson Schaben redshirting? How much PT does she get if she does not redshirt?
Middle is 4 deep right now……does Lazard really break thestarting lineup in front of West and Conaway?
Libero – with Nolan and Berta in the fold I could see eitherHillegus or Phillips not redshirting……….Hillegus would give you a third setterbut at 5’ 5†is would only be in a 6-2 situation
Right side is interesting…………….we have run with Bigby soloall of last year………..how much PT does Bailey get if she is active…………..redshirther and you have the entire class coming back as RSFreshmen next year!
Really interested to hear everyone’s ideas!

I like to watch the Cardinal and Gold scrimmage to see how the new players look. If Bowman is ready to go, I would bet CJL goes there and doesn't entertain any 6-2 ideas. Harris was pretty good back row last year so we may see her as DS now and then....not sure where Horner would fit.

Depending how Knuth is this year after the shoulder stuff.......not sure what happens in the middle. Haven't seen Lazard play but she'd have to be pretty awesome to bump Alexis. I could see Alexis getting some OH time if our OH's continue their streakiness from last year and we are solid in the middle. Needs there may determine whether Schaben or Bailey RS.

I don't think it'd be a bad bet that one or both of Phillips and Hillegas end up redshirting.

But like I said, I haven't seen any of the freshmen class play and it'll just come down to where CJL thinks we are plenty strong and who she thinks may benefit from a year of improvement before playing.

now I'm catching up a bit on my VB news - I see that big time recruit Morgan (Iowa native) committed from Wisky and is going to Kentucky instead. Huh.

And in return, Wisky picked up a Haggerty sister. Pretty solid trade.

Our class is ranked #8 - 2nd to the 2012 class that was ranked 6th. We obviously still have Bigz, Vondrak, Kuhrt, and Nolan from that class. Could do some fun things this year.

agree that this returning group could do special things but where do we stand if Bowen beats out the 2 current setters...? and are we going to need depth right away or only if there are some injuries?

Not sure what would happen there - Horner was an excellent server so I could see her being utilized there, plus Harris as I mentioned in the back row. My guess is if Bowman isn't quite ready, or struggles at all, we'd see some 6-2 with Horner (who was also a decent blocker) or just straight up Horner. Again, depending how ready Bowman is and how comfortable she and the hitters get with timing, I would suspect we'd see Horner as the most likely alternate. Looking at the stats, Horner had some decent digging stats as well (how much of that is 6-2 vs. poor receives in the 5-1 is hard to say) but more and more I could see her being rotated through the back row and a solid option to set with Bowman. I still don't think we'd officially run the 6-2 if Bowman is as good as she seems, but maybe somewhat at the beginning until everyone is comfortable.

Cowgirl thanks for the breakdown........... the dig stats could be a receive issue in the 5-1 or the 6-2 ...............our serving looks to be a strength all around.........................will be interesting to see Bowman block and serve in the scrimmage ................... like you said the timing of the offense is going to be key either way

Uuhm, the season hasn't started, not sure why all the conjecture? These things tend to sort themselves out. Bowman may end up being what CJL wants to run. Now that she's had taller setters, she might like everything going through one player. Better blocking and offensive options. With the height at the net in this conference, you need a setter that can block, IMO.

I'd doubt Conaway moves out of the middle. If Schaben is the athlete I think she is, she can move to the outside, and I'm not sure she'll redshirt. This team needs some physicallity. I could see Grace move outside this year, also. There are a lot of players for coach to think about, including Vondrak as an outside.

It will be interesting to see, but I'm not even worried about it. Serving might drive a lot of this. If you want to play, you should have a killer serve to see real court time, Harris has a great serve, so that throws a wrench in things. Coach will do what's best for the team. Nice position to be in.

for me it's just fun to think about who might play where - we have so much depth and talent this year. Excited to see the scrimmage and first few matches to see how things start to fall into place. Not worried at all - CJL will make the right choices. Now if I could just convince her to do a home and away with Wisky......

Im not worried either..............just trying to think how the freshman may impact the team....how are they going to improve the team besides adding depth...........we have a ton coming back so if a freshman is going to get limited playing time you really have to think about the value of using a red shirt and gaining a year of eligibility...............again a great problem to have!!!! No worries :)

So much talent, so much experience! I like informed opinions, but in this case it is on the weakest of supporting information to theorize happenings to the VB team this fall. And you know why it is so weak? Because Coach does not know exactly how it will play out. She knows she has the talent and loads of experience. But who are the critical players to maximize results in this campaign, and under what strategy, and what situations? I know CJL will redshirt several, but not all the freshmen, and the situation will need sorting out. Some frosh are too talented, and it may not be in their, and the programs, best interest to hold out.

And we will know generally soon enough. First match is only 34 days out.

Not exactly sure.
Mini hijack here. I don't read the register but saw they had the male athlete at the bottom.

A grade point of 2.8? With his tough math class of algebra II? My freshman is taking that this year. i hope for the best for him, but might be a good juco candidate, Imo.
