Random Thoughts VIII: The Ocho

Growing up on the farm, I didn't run into a lot of kids early on. Never spoke until 4-5 years old (outside of made up words), parents didn't work with me. Family thought I might be special needs. Just had no reason to talk, after some speech therapy in K-2 to catch up, I was fine.

Biggest problem was a friend named chuck, I made a "f" sound for ch.

My mom was mortified when she watched a friend's kid (they would take turns taking all of the kids once in a while). The kid used "f" for the "tr" sound and he loved trucks. They were driving around with the windows down and my mom said that she had never encountered so many trucks.

LittleWx has started talking a little. Or at least I thought he suggested that I have a beer the other night.

Somewhat related, My nephew barely spoke for the longest time. He would use hand gestures and made up words. My sister was getting really worried because he seemed so far behind. Then one day I guess he decided it was time to start talking and it became a never ending monologue.
She said "for the longest time I was afraid he wouldn't speak, now I'm afraid he'll never shut up"
My oldest one was like that. He would be behind enough for us to start worrying and then he would just take off. Like when he started walking, he was pretty much running right off the bat. When he started talking it was non-stop. And so on.

I tried teaching the oldest to say dad. The next two, I worked on mom solely.

Often moms get frustrated because they generally do more child rearing and then the ungrateful brat ends up saying "Daddy" for their first word.

Don't tell them that this has more about the sounds in one word being easier to make for a new talker than the sounds in the other word.

Who gives a rat's *** about that? All that work, and they all say DaDa. Fooey!

My first work was apparently "ok"

I asked my mom once how they could tell if I meant yes or no when I was first saying ok, and her response was something like, "oh, it was pretty easy to tell. You made it pretty clear"

Just accidentally wandered into a wrestling thread. That's like a whole different world over there.

You think trolls are bad elsewhere? Wrestling has a very dedicated one. Called Queso by most of us that know him. He starts several accounts (literally), some with racist usernames even, to attack KJ.
