Pumping Milk at Work

That is not accurate. Employers are required by federal law to provide a room other than the bathroom that is shielded from view and to provide reasonable break time to allow for pumping.

Miscommunication/misunderstanding here. I was attempting to contrast that women don't get paid time when pump at work but men & women get paid time when going to the bathroom. Some were arguing about the benefits of using a bucket at there desk for their bathroom. I was not saying that bathrooms are good enough for pumping by my standards or the federal government's standards.

This sure is a perky thread for a Friday!! My former place of work turned a closet into a room. BTW, what do you call this type of room? Milking Parlor? The Udder Place? Lactating Lounge? Dairy Queen? We called the place in our office the "Milk Room". They put a small fridge in there and we kept our lunches in there before it all started. You had to make sure when it was lunch time to get it out of there otherwise you had to wait until she was done. The gal looked like a meth head with tats on here arms and we all wondered how she could produce as she was not blessed with any rack at all.

I guess if they put in a break room or cafeteria, you should use it and not eat at your desk. If it was ok to eat at your desk, they would not have a separate room for it.

Read my first post. Read Carvers' post. There are reasons why the specified lactation station may not be a good option. Or hey, someone else might be using it already...and when your milk lets down, there IS no waiting.

It's not a question of being PC. It's a question of whose problem it really is. How does it hurt YOU if a woman in the next cubicle is pumping???

Big boobs =/= more milk. They just have more fat. Hungry baby = more milk.

I just don't understand why this is even a deal since OP said it didn't interfere with work.

It seems obvious to me that the lactation room is for mothers who do not have some other private space. It sounds like the cubicle is relatively private, the OP has not indicated trauma from rampant wild breast exposure hitting him in the eyes or something. Some women have private offices. Some work in a more open area and need a better spot.

The lactation room with my oldest child had a sheet with signup times. It was one room in a place with thousands of workers and women from other buildings in the complex used it too. You could go if it wasn't your time, but only if someone else wasn't signed up. I never trained my boobs well enough to only fill up at designated appointment times. Until my supervisor offered up his office, I resorted to bathroom stalls and my car a few times when desperate.

Correct, not everyone wants to smell your Thai curry ham loaf when they are sitting right next to you. Just like you shouldn't trim your fingernails while sitting at your desk. I'm probably a little intolerant of this kind of behavior because I sit so close to my co-workers and the majority of them go out of their way not to be rude. If we all had separate cubes it wouldn't be a big deal.

Why does anyone care if it is not disrupting their work? Seems like there are worse problems.

My first child, there was a designated room in a bathroom four stories down from my office. Did not have a laptop. Did not have a private office. Had to be tied to my landline. My supervisor actually asked me to used his private office and we forwarded our phone calls to each other because my job was time sensitive and he wanted me to be able to keep working. The designated area had a straight back chair and you could hear and smell everyone pooping BTW. Half the time, by the time I would get there, I had already leaked through my clothes.

Boobs are everywhere in society. Not sure why they are a big deal when they are used for function. I have known women who breastfeed up to two years and don't feel compelled to judge them as to why, although I know some actually are for medical reasons of their children. Maybe her kid gets sick less and she isn't using as much sick time. Whatever.

That was NOT what was described in the OP, though. Again...different circumstances. He & his coworker are in side by side CUBICLES in a low traffic area. I wouldn't be pumping in this room either. But I would in my office, because I can close the door and lock it, and put a sign on it saying I will be open again shortly.

I work in a room meant to be a corner office but instead houses myself and two coworkers......so I'm not far off from this (though I'd probably quit if they went to having me face people like this vs. a wall). If OP had said his setup is like mine or this pic, I'd have a completely different opinion. That's way too open.
