I can barely hit the ball standing still, and some of these guys look like they could actually tee-off this way on a regular basis.

My friend can do it real well on the range. He hits usually 500+ feet if he can connect. However it gives you zero control of the accuracy and there's a very good chance at a biff. If you can do it well, maybe try it if you have nothing to lose. Otherwise save it for practice swings on the range with some friends to show off.

Sorry, there is no way in hell he hits it 500+ feet.

That is a bit south of 200 yards. Doesn't seem unreasonable. Though it is a bit odd to hear golf distances in feet. "I've got 731 feet to the hole. Give me the 5 iron, Bones."

Hah, you are right. I was thinking yards, not feet. Drinking and posting is perilous. Hopefully we don't switch to metric. Although, meters and yards are pretty close.

Phucking commies....This is 'merica, we measure our weenises in inches, our indoor sports in feet, our outdoor sports in yards, and our motorsports in miles per hour. Have you ever heard of a nice 3 yarder for a jumpshot, or a nice 180 incher? No, it's a nice 15 footer. Ever heard of a receiver running a tight 45 foot out route? No, it's a 15 yard pattern. As for MPH, I have it on good authority that the kilometer was created solely for the purpose of making the pansy european cars seem faster. "Hey good chap, I gave her all she took and broke 100 today" MPH? No, KPH...which I think is somewhere around 13 MPH. I might be wrong, though, because I've had a few 12 oz beers, rather than those stupid european 350 mL bottles, where you're basically getting screwed out of .2 ounces of beer.

And I know, you aren't using the metric system, but gawddamit, you might as well be, if you're measuring golf distances in feet, for chrissakes.

if you watch the swing, they are using the same mechanics as a normal swing, the only difference is where their stance ends up while addressing the ball. We have a hole on our course that we do this every time and have gotten pretty good. We start at a normal swing position, then take three steps back like a field goal kicker.

We did this in high school after seeing that movie. It worked better than you'd think. Maybe I need to reinstitute it.
