Pre-Memorial Day Hoiberg NBA Update

At this point if I was AD I would just hire another coach. I loved Fred being our coach but the run is over whether he realizes it or not. He can either coach minnesota or the chicago next season or they can find him a job for next year. announcing your staying one more year does nothing for ISU.

The only other alternative would be Fred agreeing to a long term contract and publicly stating that he is staying at ISU for the long haul. Anything less and JP just needs to push him out the door sooner than later.

That's why you aren't an AD.

I think the majority want him gone asap if he's going to leave anyway next year. And those of us who feel that way, don't care what his job options are that are open or occupied that he may be considering.

2016-17 is going to be rough with or without Fred. Fred on the bench gives the team the best chance to do special things next year.

If this whole process has shown me anything is that Fred is turning into this in many people's eyes:

And, unfortunately, I'll have to agree. The longer this drags out, the worse Fred looks. A few months ago, he could do no wrong in everyone's eyes. Today, the disillusionment within the fanbase keeps growing and growing. Only a long term commitment will redeem him at this point.

Unless JP and Fred are working behind the scenes to get a coach we'll all be happy with?...

Your really think JP is sitting down with Fred going through a list of possible replacements? I personally don't see that happening.

Here’s where we stand going in to the holiday weekend (check my posts over the past week for more depth on some of these items) – and note that all of this is very fluid, continues to change, but is based on multiple sources…

  1. No formal decision has been made.
  2. What I posted early yesterday with regards to a possible reversal of momentum continues to hold true.
  3. The T’Wolves continue to be a big factor in the decision making.
  4. While money is not the reason Fred would leave, it is always a factor.
  5. Jamie has reached out to a subset of donors regarding possible monetary offers.
  6. Many donors I've spoken to don't want to pony up a lot of money just to have an “in principle†agreement in place for Fred to take over the T’Wolves next year, they want a commitment.
  7. Very few want to simply prolong the inevitable with the possible repercussions of a “lame-duck†coach, though a few seem fine with “one more yearâ€.
  8. While many donors would request a large increase in the NBA buyout clause of Fred’s contract ($4-5 mil), I hear that there is a lot of reluctance within the AD to even propose that to Fred.
  9. Much has been suggested about a possible rift between Fred and Jamie, but that is being overblown by some. They have disagreements and different styles, but no more or less than any other successful coach/AD combo.
  10. The door is not shut on Fred/ISU, I still see some scenarios where he comes back for 1 year (i.e. T’Wolves for ’16-‘17), though very few scenarios where he comes back for 2 or more years.
  11. Some are leery of a strong push for Hornacek due to past tension between him and other players, coaches, donors. This would be interesting to see unfold moving forward.
  12. Naturally, JP has a short list to move forward with if Fred leaves and it’s said that there may be a few surprises on that list not currently being discussed, for better or worse.

A couple other points…

  1. You are and will continue to hear a lot of things leak that benefit one or more parties – that’s the nature of this business.
  2. I have never and will never post something that is, or I believe is, propaganda to push an agenda.
  3. I have not and will not just throw **** out there. If I post something, it’s because 2 or more trusted sources state it and I feel it’s legit. Things change and the business world we live in is dynamic and fluid, everybody has been and will be wrong at one time or another.
  4. I have been wrong in the past and I will be wrong in the future. That doesn't mean what was posted wasn't true at the time. Much of what goes on behind the scenes will never be publicly shared, even if it would help some of us look better if it was.
  5. I get no financial kickback or incentive for sharing anything, so if you have problems with what I post, too bad:)

Good stuff thanks Jeremy!

Thanks for the info. Thats a huge bummer. I was really hoping that if he DOES go to the NBA he goes now. My cat could coach this team to wins next year, but having a lame duck coach could screw us for years to come.

Of course, we would all like this drama to be over. But how can the AD "just hire another coach?" Fred is still under contact. And the Bulls coach is still under contract. There are no open jobs in this drama yet.

No. But the deafening silence is making me lose some respect for Fred. I'm just hoping there's a reason for it. It's ****ing killing me.

Nothing redeems your image once you become a public figure. One way or another, people will find a way to become disillusioned with you, even if you're doing nothing wrong.

For anyone responding to this post, yes, I believe that Fred is not doing anything wrong here or holding Cyclone Nation hostage. This is just how things work with the pieces which put this situation together.

I really think Fred is concerned about his heart, as he should be. So maybe he feels like he only wants to coach basketball for another 3 or 4 years? If that is the case, and his dream was to coach in the NBA, then I guess he'd better go now if he only wants to coach for a few more years and then retire.

If that's the case, then fine, so be it. But just go do it then. Don't hurt ISU in the process. The way he's handling this has not been good for ISU.

Maybe Fred is just baiting Cyclone Nation to see how quickly and badly they would turn on him. He is seeing plenty from some of you.

I wish the Thibs situation would just get resolved so things could start moving one way or another.

I disagree with a lot of what's being said here. We have one of the best teams in ISU history coming back next year. Obviously Fred is the best man to coach them. If we can get Fred back, even if it's just one year, we need to do it. Go ALL IN for next year and see what happens.

This, in my opinion, isn't a reason for the silence. Is this what we're telling recruits? "Wait on the Thibs thing"...

Where do I sign up to get 59 likes for a post that really says nothing? (much like the one I just made)

I was thinking this too, but what is he supposed to do? Comment on rumors? He's not denying he's interested, it's not his fault that it's dragging out. I guarantee he did not anticipate it dragging out this long and I am sure he feels terrible for it.

This is not true IMO. Fred could be handling this MUCH better than he has, if he cares at all about ISU anyway.
