Pre-Memorial Day Hoiberg NBA Update

I disagree with a lot of what's being said here. We have one of the best teams in ISU history coming back next year. Obviously Fred is the best man to coach them. If we can get Fred back, even if it's just one year, we need to do it. Go ALL IN for next year and see what happens.

Couldn't agree more.

ALL ****ING IN.

No. But the deafening silence is making me lose some respect for Fred. I'm just hoping there's a reason for it. It's ****ing killing me.

Maybe the reason is that is genuinely torn on a decision to stay at his alma mater or go to the NBA with the best talent in the world? At the end of the day is pretty telling where the program is that he would consider passing up the NBA to stay here.

The sad thing is the Hoiberg situation could drag out until July, maybe August causing the program to hang in limbo as far as recruiting and such. Otz has got a handle on things now but you gotta think that a statement from Fred addresed to the public has to be imminent. Regardless of if he is staying or going.

Isn't the team supposed to go to Spain in August? I can't see Fred letting this drag out into late July, knowing this trip is coming up. That would be really crappy if he did. They need to know who their coach is going to be, when they go on that trip.

This is all very interesting. I don't see a scenario where Fred comes back next year unless it's for the long haul, so there doesn't seem to be a point to discussing that. Too much dirty laundry being aired for him to have any successful clandestine plans to turn his back on ISU after one more year.

I'd put my money on Minnesota. Minneapolis aligns more with the type of place Fred would want to re-set his roots. Add in Okafor/Towns, more coach-friendly ownership, and a lot of nice young talent...it's a very ideal situation.

If Fred had come out and announced he was leaving because his open heart surgery made him realize he might not have the time he thought he had, and that meant pursuing the NBA now because he wasn't sure how much time he had left I think the fanbase would have been disappointed, probably somewhat upset, but overall we'd understand. We'd move on and Hoiberg would still be the Mayor. But instead he's just been totally silent and this has dragged on for way too long. And we're finding out that ISU wasn't even his dream job after all and he might even be willing to crater the program by being a lame duck for a year and then moving on. Fred could have ended this before it started by making a public comment. He still could limit the damage by making a statement today. This crisis and drama is 100% on Fred Hoiberg. He is the one in control. This is on him.

I agree with this, however, it is in regards to this where I think we all thought Fred Hoiberg might be different than a Gene Chizik type guy who has no allegiance to ISU whatsoever.

When we brought Fred in as our new head basketball coach, I think we all thought we were getting a guy that absolutely loved ISU and bled cardinal and gold. And because of that, I think we all believed that Fred would do what was in the best interest of him and his family, but also would consider what was best for ISU as well.

Well, it turns out that Fred really isn't any different than any other head coach that is mostly out for themselves it appears. And yes, it pains me a lot to say that. But I think it's true.

Fred is watching out for Fred, which is fine, I just think we all wished he still had a soft spot for ISU somewhere in him, but maybe he doesn't. If he does end up leaving ISU this year, and quits on guys like Niang, Naz, McKay, Morris, etc.... and still hasn't won even a Big 12 title or gone any further than one Sweet Sixteen appearance, I just do NOT want to hear in his press conference how much ISU means to him and how hard it is for him to be leaving. Leave that BS for someone else Fred, because I'm not buying it. You used ISU just to get where you personally wanted to get and nothing more, and you know it. You aren't any different than the John Calipari's of the world.... say you love where you are only until something better comes along.

Holding ISU hostage and making demands is not the way I figured Fred would go out. Oh well. Disappointing.

This is 100% how i feel about it! I feel like we were the stepping stone for someone who i never thought would use ISU as a stepping stone. I know the jobs arent open as of now but Fred knows if they will be or not and what he is doing. I will not be watching the press conference if he has one because i also do not wanna hear what he has to say if he leaves.

Answer me this--who has ISU's best interests at heart right now? Jamie or Fred? For me, it's Jamie and its not even close. Fred is furthering his own interests ($) and dreams (and that is fine). But if he is hoping for a big pay raise only to jump ship to the Timberwolves next year then the donors are absolutely right not to pony up.

Pollard just had a major heart attack a couple of months ago. By rights he could've decided to take it easy but instead he is busting his gut out there for ISU. He has a condition where stress could literally kill him and he is still out there fielding tough questions and doing the dirty work behind the scenes so that ISU basketball can land on its feet after what Fred is putting it through right now. I hope everyone realizes we are lucky to have him as our AD. If you do, send him a note of encouragement--I know it would be huge for him to know that Cyclone fans have his back right now.

Totally agree. Very well said!

I wish the Thibs situation would just get resolved so things could start moving one way or another.

OMG This. The people getting on Fred for his silence should be on Chicago 100 times over. Make a decision/announcement if you are keeping Thibs or not already. FH cannot and will not say anything about the Bulls HC position until it is either vacant or Chicago decides to make a statement saying Thibs is staying put.

This is not true IMO. Fred could be handling this MUCH better than he has, if he cares at all about ISU anyway.

He can't comment about a job that isn't open.
People want everything right now. Things just don't often work that way.

No, but if I were recruiting against Fred right now I'd have a lot of comments (and questions) for recruits and they'd have a lot to do with newspaper headlines, sports TV, Fred Hoiberg, the Chicago Bulls, and Tom Thibideau...

Exactly. I can't believe some people on here are questioning Fred's love of ISU. I think it's pretty obvious this is not going down how he wants it but at this point, there isn't much he can do. Aside from coming out and making a statement, which could turn out to be a lie. He won't do that.

If you don't think Fred loves ISU, just look at last season. It tore him up. The dude looked emaciated towards the end of the year.

How? What is he supposed to say? I almost guarantee Bulls management told him Thibs would be gone quick... This is turning out to not be the case so he is in limbo. Now he has to make it seem like he's just now considering all of this options because he's ultimately decided, but can't really say that.

This x 1,000,000! In no way is the current situation with the basketball program JP's doing. This is on Fred. JP needs to do what he needs to do here and that is to protect the interests of the basketball program and the university. If Fred bolts that is on Fred (obviously) and if JP negotiates with Fred on a new deal that has ISU's best interests in mind (a strong commitment to ISU and a larger NBA buyout) and Fred bolts then that is on Fred.

You don't negotiate to hand over the keys to the kingdom and big money to any coach regardless of who it is if you don't have a strong commitment from them in return.

A very telling point in Jeremy's comments on the situation is that JP doesn't want to push the issue for a larger NBA buyout for Fred. It's not because he doesn't know that it's the right thing to do but it probably has more to do with it being viewed as him pushing Fred out the door if in fact he does decide to leave. An AD at ISU that is viewed as pushing "The Mayor" out of town would become public enemy #1 (and in this case that just simply isn't fair to JP).
