Pre-fall depth chart

Not sure if serious?

With the WORST defense in the country, we were competitive with half the conference.

4 point last minute loss to a Waters-led KSU.

We were right with OSU until a bonehead play / iffy call at halftime.

Lost by 3 in the final seconds @ Texas.

Lost by 3 to Texas Tech.

Lost by 13 to West Virginia.



Sure, the stars would need to align to compete with TCU, Baylor, & OU, but we most definitely should at least compete with the rest of the conference.

Did he really show promise? Looked like a slow high school QB trying to play LB to me. He was soft.
 
Looks like a lot of newbies at several positions - a little too many. My concern is first half of schedule when we can win the newbies will be trying to learn their roles. The running back and linebacker slots are most concern.
 
My biggest concern is whether we will see an offense that can put up points regularly against everyone. That's been the biggest issue since Rhoads has been here. The defense bends but usually holds teams within reach.

The offense showed flashes of mangino doing some nice things. I hope that continues this year with aggressive play calling and players that seek to get the extra yard instead of being content with stepping g out of bounds etc.

Is anybody of the opinion that the defense won't improve at all? I could see them improving to 80th or 90th in defensive points per possession (they were 108th last year if I'm counting right on cfbanalytics.com). That's actually a pretty big jump. That's still pretty bad though (KU level last year), and that would mean the offense has to produce... which it basically never has.

I'm just not willing to accept anybody saying this defense will be mediocre. Mediocre would be a tremendous improvement.

Miller had been in the system for three years before it clicked as well. Good news is....for the first time in c ouple of years we are talking about the back ups and not the starters.
The defense will be as good as Tucker and Harris make them. If Tucker is as good as advertised he eats up another blocker which frees up Harris and helps Pierson on the edge. Both of which takes pressure off the OLB.
I think we have the physical ability with Harris and Jones but we will see. That leaves Peters. If he has the sytem down and will be in the right place at the right time then you can handle one of three being physically limited. Last year when Miller was at WILL, we had all three LBs being limited.

Cloneice is correct. LB play has been very poor the last couple of years regardless of the DL. The DL made things worse but the DL doesn't affect pass coverage abilities and making the correct reads. However, we have seen every LB take at least two years to really grasp the system under Wally. Even Knott and Klein struggled with assignments. The difference is they had the physical talent to make up for that.

This LB corp will rely on Harris truly understadning the system, Jones being able to grasp it quickly and Peters' intelligence. We will have a good idea half way through the first game

Harris was a Juco All-American, Jones was the #28 overall safety who spent two years at NC State before going to a strict discipline army school, and Peters is a crazy guy who's relentless and does all the little things the coaches teach right.

They should do fine with how improved the DL should be this year. Last years LB's still would have been weak, but a lot better looking if they had Coe and Irving in front of them.

Bundrage can't apply for a medical RS until the end of his senior season. And yes, he would have a legitimate shot at it.

Medical redshirt is separate from a redshirt. He can still get one.

I agree 100% with Aaclone. Best case scenario, he has a blow up year and is playing for money next year.

I think mediocre is what everyone is hoping for. Realistically anyways.
 
Keep in mind, rule changes have allowed for more position meetings in the summer. Rhoads covered this in Chris' podcast. In theory....that could halp speed the development of the JUCOs and newcomers. This will be crucial with a player like Jones. He is stepping into a crucial role on this defense in that hybrid spot and as much as anyone needs to be on the right page. IF Harris and Jones grasp the system the LB corp will be greatly improved and whatever limitations(I don't think they are all that big) that Peters have can be handled.

Last year's defense also lacked a "QB." Jaques Washington was THE guy that did that for a long time. iSu simply did not have that guy last year. Who is that man this year? Does Harris understand things well enough to do it? How about Cotton-Moya?

I'm wondering how many changes there will be in this depth chart between now and, say, conference season--hopefully not bevcause of injuries. For example, I wouldn't be too terribly surprised to see a kid like Willie Harvey climb the depth chart. And I like Mike Warren, I justhope that the offensive line does it's job.

And I agree with one poster above. With so much starting experience back, and so many upperclassmen, the offensive line doesn't qualify as being "young" or "inexperienced" any longer.

The only way I could see Mangino being HC is if CPR is fired midseason and Mangino turns the team around. I don't think either will happen.

I would love to see Scoggins, Taiese and Philbert take over starting roles on the depth chart. Nothing against Lalk, Omoile and Dagel/Campos it would just mean the OL upgraded and we had quality depth.
