Pre-fall depth chart

This. AJ and Jake were heads and shoulders above anything we put on the field last year -as Sophs. If they made mistakes as Sophs they were playing aggressively, not back peddling at the snap and running away from the play like Chicken Little.

Nothing more infuriating than Seeley, Ferch and Miller consciously sliding away from a play instead of trying to blow it up. Brackens was the only one capable of that. The other guys were just there.

That's why he's on the Chiefs who have one of the best D's in the league, and the Seahawks were also trying to get him.
purely on potential and measurables. natural talent was never his issue. consistent play and understanding the game was. He was awful as a DT and out of position. He played in spurts as a DE and took himself out of plays far more than he put himself in position to make plays.

guy could go on to be an all pro for KC but still won't change his production at iSU which was.....yawn....crappy.

He can always have a career cutting women's hair though if the NFL falls through.

I agree that he wasn't good at isu but he was very young and he still had another year to play.

He could have improved quite a bit based on the two factors.

Two of these guys play the same position. Knott was hurt this spring and may or may not be done (per the coaches during spring ball). Seeley and Mills were very far from being Big 12 LBs last season. So of the 3 "returning starters" you speak of, two are at the same position (and one of those is battling major injury issues) and the other did not play well enough last year to be a reliable backup.

The 3 starters have never started a game in the Big 12. I guess we just have different definitions of depth. To me depth means multiple players in the two-deep that we have confidence will come in and play well or at least reliably, rather than just having multiple guys in the two-deep who have played in games before.

Agree with you that Harris is the key. Need him to be a stud. Peters beat out Knott because of his hip injury, so while I am hopeful he will be better, its way too early to assume he is just plain better. Agree there is hope - disagree there is any depth at all at the position.

You may be right on some things, I have to disagree with you. Here's an example, if you are a 230 pd linebacker trying to pick up a run play but all of a sudden, a 290-300 pd linemen comes up and lights you up, who is it to blame??? Yes these kids did not play well but when you don't have a defensive line to help (which is the backbone of the DEFENSE) then they look horrible. With a new and improved line, I think we will see these kids at linebacker position really start to excel at this position. But to point fingers at them and blame them for poor play is ignorant. All the defense didn't play well last year and that's a fact.

Which is why I said "sucked" meaning in the past. His play was less than stellar, he had continual off the field issues and was just not good here. I never discussed his potential but he and Coe did not have the work ethics to realize their potential. Hopefully getting the boot is the *** kick the young man needs to realize natural ability only takes you so far. I never cheer for a kid to fail and want all of them to be successful. His domestic abuse incident does leave a bad taste in my mouth though. I will admit that.

Cloneice understands getting blocked by an OL. What he is talking about is the LBs making wrong reads, their inabilities to cover TEs/WRs and taking poor angles. None of those are the fault of the DL in front of them and the LBs were all guilty of them last year. Being undersized directly affects one's ability to fight off the block of a DL and so does foot speed.

Cloneice understands that the DL did not help the LBs but he also understands their play was bad despite what the DL did/didn't do. I don't htink he blames the kids at all because he constantly questions why it takes iSU LBs so long to understand Wally's system and wonders why we have Safeties playing LB.

Our LB play last year was awful in every measure. They made next to zero plays (except Brackens) and were constantly out of position. They weren't just getting blocked all of the time.

I went back and watched the ND STATE game and came to the quick realization that Syrie really struggled when he came in for cotton moya.

He was unblocked at least three times to his side (rolled up once) and he didn't even slow down the ball carry. Didn't touch him.

And made a terrible play on the long pass before half.

That led to huge scores for ndsu. It's amazing sometimes what the absence or weakness at one spot can do to a team.

(Linebackers weren't great either)

Sorry if this has been mentioned. There is an article up on the Rivals site about the Juco RB Kendall Williams. I do not have access but the headline talks about him working to get his classes finished up. Hopefully both Kendall and Leath can make it. We need every able body we can get.

I am curious about this, too. Kendall Willians was not in the depth chart. Is he in the same boat as Bobby Leath, needing to wrap up some academics from JC or whatever? That would not be unusual, but haven't heard any news on Kendall for the past month..

During Rhoads' presser at the media day, he said we would only have one JUCO joining us in August, I'm guessing that that is Leath. I'm beginning to think that Williams won't be here.

Leath will for sure be here. Williams has work to get done before getting here and is a risk.

That took balls. My condolences.
In general, more people should watch replays before commenting on play(not you specifically). it is amazing what you can see when completely sober and have the ability to rewind and focus. I love when fans state "I don't have to watch the replay, I was there." Ya, because you are better than every coach that has coached the game since games have been recorded.

again...not a shot at you just fans in general

Knot and Klein would have been ripped apart their sophomore years as well if they had that DL. Having a good DL gives LB's just enough time to recover from their mistakes. They had that, these guys didn't.

Meeks and Miller had the potential to be better than they were, but they were set up to fail... Especially Meeks.
