Pre-fall depth chart

Man, some of you people are so negative it is unbelievable.

Do I think Iowa State's defense will be great let alone good this year? No, I do not. I do, however, think that they will be improved and that is not a stretch at all. Look at all of the new names (which nobody has seen play) who have entered the depth chart, many of which have beaten out starters from last year.

Linebacker is exciting seeing new faces and names there. I don't see how that could be a bad thing.

The defensive line (Garcia, Cousin, Aka, Trent, Meyers were all soph or younger) played a ton as underclassmen last year and Rhoads has said numerous times that in the trenches is the most difficult position to play as an underclassmen. Look at a guy like Jake McDonough, progressed nicely as he got older.

Just tired of people acting like our players can't and will never get any better.
I think you're mistaking negative with realistic.

After reading this thread, it's clear most of yall will be in for a big disappointment this season. I swear some of yall think we have an Alabama type defense. With our LB's, we will have the worst run D in the Big12. OU will decide how many rushing yards they wanna put up against us because we won't be able to stop their run game.

I see everyone talking about how we have some experience on defense now. I don't know how that's a positive. I would rather have a freshman with talent and no experience than our guys with their "experience". The only "experience" our defense has, is missing tackles and giving up crazy amounts of yards.

Our best player on D is probably an undersized JUCO DT who has never played a down of D1 football. I think that says it all.

It's mind blowing how clueless you are.

That we bring back zero D1 starts at two of the starting LB positions and the other is a former walkon?

I mean, it could all work out, but the odds a certainly not great. And absolutely not int he realm of "What could possibly go wrong, we have new guys!"

I think 5-19 over the past two years is reason enough for people to be skeptical.

My point being, at least they aren't trotting the same 3 guys out there who got ran over by virtually every team we played. That's how it's a good thing.

Again, I don't think people realize how young some of our players were last year. Especially in a program like ISU, it's going to take kids 3 or 4 years to get up to speed.

Harris was a Juco All-American, Jones was the #28 overall safety who spent two years at NC State before going to a strict discipline army school, and Peters is a crazy guy who's relentless and does all the little things the coaches teach right.

They should do fine with how improved the DL should be this year. Last years LB's still would have been weak, but a lot better looking if they had Coe and Irving in front of them.

Yes, these guys don't understand we need our team to be upperclassman who have been developed and do all the little things right to be able to match up with the other teams with younger more talented players.

We do understand that but our players aren't being developed under CPR. That's the problem.

How many consecutive years have we used that excuse? I've used it the past 2, I'm not doing it again this year.

I am starting to wonder what the point of bringing jucos on the team is.

They can't play obviously because they don't have DI experience. Impossible. They also couldn't be any good. Ridiculous idea.

Somebody better notify Bil Snyder that isu has several posters on this board that know more than he does and he better stop recruiting those juco players. Doesn't he know they can't be any good...they have no DI experience...LOL

I mean weren't some of the Cyclones best player jucos. Say it ain't so. :)

Comical to say the least.

The fact that anyone is trying to play up our front 7 as having depth or returning quality experience is just mind blowing. Do people not remember how teams, nearly every single team, ran over us like we were D3? I just can't even fathom it. Sure some of these guys started but someone had to, the staff didn't have a above average player in the front 7.

We we better hope Tucker and Harris are absolute world beaters.

I'll disagree with that. Morrissey was an above average player. Miller was probably average or slightly above when they finally moved him to MIKE. Too bad he was only there for 4 games. There were points in the year where both Pierson and Taylor played above average, but it definitely was not the entire season. Overall, the interior DL and especially the LBs were really, really bad last year. The LBs looked like they had zero coaching, zero instincts and never watched a second of film. They were atrocious.

This season will come down to offensive line play and the defense somehow finding a way to become below average instead of the worst defense in FBS (in yards per game).

The projected starters on the offensive line have a combined 75 starts and they all have good size. Inexperience and undersized arguments won't work; if they struggle it will be due to lack of athletic ability, poor strength and conditioning, or coaching (probably all three). Decent OL play gives WR time to actually run a route and SBR a chance. Our WR's should be a nightmare for defenses, but with no running game and no time to pass we were relegated to lateral passes against 7-8 defenders (5.8 ypa, 118 out of 128).

Good OL play would also help a defense that we should all hope see's as little time on the field as possible. We have numbers, not depth. The secondary doesn't look too bad, if we can actually force passing downs. but our DE's other than Taylor are undersized and the LB's are either unproven or have already proven they couldn't handle the Big 12. The whole front 7 needs to improve significantly if we don't want the worst defense in the country again.

QB - I'm fine with SBR. He does a nice job, although he really needs to work on the deep pass...has he ever completed one of those? I used to worry about him running too much, but with the current backups, I'd just let him run. They can handle things if necessary. Still don't know why Lanning doesn't get a Belldozer type package.

OL - I think that the OL is light and I would have liked to see them put a few more pounds on the guys. My hope is that Taiese gets a starting spot and maybe Scoggins. Get a little more beef and physicality in there. It's about time that Burton and Campos live up to the hype. I'd just settle for an OL that can hold the line and not get shoved back into the ball carrier.

RB - I'm not sold on the RBs, but Warren can make some things happen if he gets a crease. But if the OL can't keep the DL out of the backfield, then Brown is probably the best bet unless that JUCO shows up.

WR - No issues at all with this group. They just need to keep the rush off long enough to get them the ball.

TE - TE recruiting has been bad for awhile and it's come home to roost. Now they're going to have to put blockers in on running plays and take the TE out on passing plays.

DE - Nice mix there with Taylor, Pierson, Luna, White. It wouldn't suprise me at all to see Nerness play. Why in the world would this staff redshirt anyone who can help them this year?? If Madison can't gain any more weight than that, he needs to either switch to LB or hit the road.

DT/NG - I still don't get using the smaller, more athletic Tucker at NG. He seems like a 3 technique to me. It's a good sign that Garcia is 3rd team. I thought that he had some nice potential. If Leath can give them anything at all, this position is probably better than it's been in 10 years.

LB - A lot of unknowns, that's for sure. Hopefully things turn out well. I think that they would have went after a JUCO if they didn't think Harris could handle the MIKE job. Jones was brought in when Mutcherson was booted because that meant Floyd was moving to SS. Will is a cluster. If Knott makes it back, maybe they have a rotation there that can make the best use of everyone's talents.

CB - Still don't understand Ken Lynn. That makes zero sense to me. Still, the starters are OK. Backups are raw. I've heard good things about Peavy. Wiltz is fast, although Ryen burned him in the spring game.

S - I'm fine with the starters for sure. Backups not so much. Cotton seemed to final start playing well, so I think that he's capable. They're going to have to address the depth this fall. Either a position change or someone stepping up.

Well it's not my fault you used it two years when it was known we would be bad. Last year at this time I said we had some young talent and could be good, but wouldn't be surprised if they weren't ready until next year. And they clearly weren't ready last year as we seen. But the team right now is in a hell of a lot better shape than it was this time last year.

Sorry if this has been mentioned. There is an article up on the Rivals site about the Juco RB Kendall Williams. I do not have access but the headline talks about him working to get his classes finished up. Hopefully both Kendall and Leath can make it. We need every able body we can get.

So the guy who redshirted last year beats out the guy who was starting at the end of last year is a bad thing?

Sounds like the guy who redshirted is better than last year's starter......that would be a good thing.

We should be better. The reality is that we do not know how much better. And you do not know that either.

Everyone needs to keep in mind that this is the PRE-FALL depth chart. Given the history of our talent evaluators, sometimes it seems they just throw **** at the wall to see what sticks. Let's not forget that our starting LB's for UNI last year were Miller, Meeks and Ferch. Yikes! How we could have come out of fall camp and thought that was our best lineup is really beyond me.
