Does anybody know a good place in Des Moines where you can get into some pick up basketball games? I assume I would have to join a club somewhere, but I'm trying to find the best place. I've heard some places have games, but they are hard to get into. Any suggestions from anybody?

When I lived in Des Moines a couple of years ago I used to play in some GREAT pickup games in an alley over by North High School. I'm not going to lie, it was not the safest place in the city, but boy was the ballin' hot. My forte is the alley-oop pass so I was in HIGH demand when teams were picked. After a while I stopped playing because some of the guys made some derogatory comments towards me after my team won 5 straight games. I don't really want to talk about it, actually. Thanks for bringing up some bad memories for this guy.

My former roommate used to go there, the only thing he said was sometimes the people playing took it too seriously or where a little shady in character so you had to pick and choose when to play. Think he even saw some near fights break out too.

I have been pretty disappointed with the lack of games at Aspen. The Walnut Creek Y has been the best I have found as far as good competition...

I know that Sportsplex West out here in Waukee has $5 Wednesday nights and say that they have pickup basketball, but no one can give me an honest answer to if there are actually numbers to play showing up most of the time. I don't want to show up and be the only one wanting to play ball. And being in my 30's and a slower big man I don't want to be guarding an 18 year old just out of high school either. So I guess I sound pretty picky.

A pick-up game, taken too seriously? Stop it, you're lying! I used to play regularly with this guy who kept stats. This was a pick-up leage we had. Usually 20 - 24 guys on 2 small courts. We'd play games to 5, just to make sure everyone was getting rotations. And he kept stats for himself in a little notebook. Of course, this was the same guy who could see you were out of bounds from the opposite side of the court, with Masking tape OB lines. Aaaaah, the good 'ol Days.

Keeping stats? In a pick up game? Sounds just a little over the top.

I'm going to get a membership to the Y for Christmas, so if anyone in Ankeny wants to play pickup, I would love to.
