They're not really claiming any of those things as far as I can tell. What they're claiming is that people associated with the universities' athletic departments knew about it and were therefore knowledgeable about the potential benefits of these transactions.

Serial killers usually claim they are not guilty, too. Right before they are found guilty. Assuming their claims are truthful prior to them being proven to be anything is silly. All these claims prove is that they are on trial and have defense lawyers who are paid to provide a defense for them.
