OT: MVC Tourney

I hate UNI but I found myself pulling for them late for some odd reason. Good game either way, it entertained me. Arch madness is a gem of a tournament.

I'm not sure why some of you dislike UNI so much? Maybe it's because I'm married to a UNI graduate, but I've always thought their fans are fairly good. I'd have had a lot more trouble with Hawkeye fans.

For goodness sake, our basketball coach is a UNI person...

If referees actually call fouls on SIU in the NCAA Tournament, as opposed to today, look for them to be an early exiter.

You know I had the same argument with one of my Missouri Valley apologist friends. I think that Southern will lose the first weekend of the tourney, because they will be in foul trouble. I think that Creighton is in the same boat.

The Missouri Valley protects the hell out of SIU and Creighton. Over the years, it has cost the conference a lot of money in terms of post season bids. I guess that is why they will always be a mid major, no matter how much noise they want to make.

Let me get this straight: You think that the MVC will always be a mid-major, not because of school size or money, but because there's a grand conspiracy for the refs to throw games to SIU and Creighton?

I suppose that's why Wichita State tore through the non-conference games and then sucked it up in the MVC. The refs were screwing them, right?

Wow. That's a nice theory you've got going there.

The theory might be a stretch but if SIU tried playing that agressive defense against Kansas in the Phog or in another big time programs arena, they would pile up the fouls. This season their only road game against a "name" school was Indiana and they lost 57-47. They committed 27 fouls and three of their starters had 4 fouls a piece. Maybe that's a fluke but maybe not.

Anyone who argues that Southern Illionis won't struggle when they play a tightley officitated game has not watched this team play this year. People talk up their defense, but the fact of the matter is they hand check and grab everyone. Tightly officiated game and they struggle to beat anyone.

OK, I will try to go slower, please try and keep up. The mid major line was in reference to the mindset of the people who run the conference.

If you have watched ANY Missouri Valley basketball over the past 2-3 years, it seems that Southern and Creighton play incredibly physical, more than any other team in the league. Amazingly enough, they never seem to have players foul out. Yet when they play games in the NCAA, they seem to lose 2-3 guys in the first game.

Look at the game that SIU played against Butler, yeah it was at Butler, but had Missouri Valley refs.

Hell when Korver was a senior, Creighton went 29-3, and lost in the first round, and if I remember correctly, they had foul trouble in that game as well.

Now in terms of Wichita State, their big non conference wins were against George Mason, LSU, and Syracuse. The only one of those teams that might get a bid is Syracuse, and they need some more wins.

SIU has had some success in the NCAAs as well. Part of that is this is the NCAAs cash cow and nobody wants to watch the refs call 30 fouls on a team. Teams that play that style can usually get a pass from officials in their conference, see Oklahoma State.

And on that last three the UNI guy didn't jump but he was inside the guy's shirt. It's not an easy shot to make.

Perhaps the refs were trying to protect Indiana and would protect Kansas at Phog. That argument can go both ways. Unless you watch a good number of MVC games, you can't make that statement.

And it started VERY early against Drake today. First possession of the game for Drake and Keita was under the hoop picking a dropped ball up and trying to go up strong but had both of his arms being held down by 2 SIU players. No call, SIU players separate his arms from the ball, ball goes out of bounds and to SIU.

Its sickening to watch. Its almost as blatant to see as watching teams getting homered at Smog Allen Fieldhouse.

haven't seen SIU, but Mizzou style defense without the cheesey nickname?

Not so much full court defense all the time, but "in your shorts" defense. Constantly hand checking, grabbing, slapping. Pretty much taking it to the brink of what the officials will allow, and they seem to allow them to play very physically. I mean, its good strategy if you can get away with it, but the problem is, the officials don't seem to let anyone else get away with it.

Drake = Done
UNI = NIT
Iowa = NIT
ISU = Needs 2-3 wins to make NIT
Nice year by the state. ISU at least has an excuse. Iowa is in year 8 of the almighty coach. Drake had all seniors. UNI had 2 great senior leaders and an outstanding junior. What the heck?

At least the ISU women will make the tourney.

It is a great strategy when the refs let things go, in the MVC they let things go. However, it will come back to bite them when the game is called even normally.

Don't misunderstand, I respect the job the Lowrey does, as well as Altman, but to say that their league doesn't allow them to be more "physical" is insane. I have watched a lot of MVC ball this year, and over the past 4-5 years as well, and their is a clear double standard. And in efforts to get teams from a 10 seed to an 8 seed, they have screwed teams that could have given them more bids (nit as well).
