If referees actually call fouls on SIU in the NCAA Tournament, as opposed to today, look for them to be an early exiter.
You know I had the same argument with one of my Missouri Valley apologist friends. I think that Southern will lose the first weekend of the tourney, because they will be in foul trouble. I think that Creighton is in the same boat.
The Missouri Valley protects the hell out of SIU and Creighton. Over the years, it has cost the conference a lot of money in terms of post season bids. I guess that is why they will always be a mid major, no matter how much noise they want to make.
Let me get this straight: You think that the MVC will always be a mid-major, not because of school size or money, but because there's a grand conspiracy for the refs to throw games to SIU and Creighton?
I suppose that's why Wichita State tore through the non-conference games and then sucked it up in the MVC. The refs were screwing them, right?
Wow. That's a nice theory you've got going there.
The theory might be a stretch but if SIU tried playing that agressive defense against Kansas in the Phog or in another big time programs arena, they would pile up the fouls. This season their only road game against a "name" school was Indiana and they lost 57-47. They committed 27 fouls and three of their starters had 4 fouls a piece. Maybe that's a fluke but maybe not.
Anyone who argues that Southern Illionis won't struggle when they play a tightley officitated game has not watched this team play this year. People talk up their defense, but the fact of the matter is they hand check and grab everyone. Tightly officiated game and they struggle to beat anyone.
haven't seen SIU, but Mizzou style defense without the cheesey nickname?
Not so much full court defense all the time, but "in your shorts" defense. Constantly hand checking, grabbing, slapping. Pretty much taking it to the brink of what the officials will allow, and they seem to allow them to play very physically. I mean, its good strategy if you can get away with it, but the problem is, the officials don't seem to let anyone else get away with it.
