Any recommendations on oil changes in Ames? The last few times that I have gone to LOF, the price keeps going up. For a simple oil change that lasts 5 months, it has been between $100 to $120. Pre-COVID, it was in the $30-$60 range if memory serves. My mechanic is cheaper at around $60/change, but it is only good for 3 months. I'd like to get oil changes less frequent than 3 months.

Has anyone tried Wal-Mart? They look cheap, but it's Wal-Mart.

Tell your mechanic to go full synthetic oil. Those are 10k miles while blends are 5k. Only extra cost should be cost of the oil.

Your oil change intervals should be the same no matter where you go. Full synthetic changes are like 7,500-10k for most cars. Follow the manufacturer recommendations, not what they put on the sticker.

Synthetic changes are 90+ now pretty much everywhere. Conventional oil will be cheaper but it depends on what your car needs.

Most places I know are synthetic blends. 50-50 syn/conventional

I just had a dealership tell me I needed to flush my brake fluid. I’ve never heard of that ever. Had vehicles pushing 300k that never had it done. I passed on that.

Do you know how to do it yourself? If so, are you physically able to? Otherwise, Walmart would work. The oil they use for under $60 is just fine.

Support local.
Buy your tires from somewhere like entire. Then you can get them rotated for free while you get your oil changed.
Plenty of places like this.

Know multiple people in Ames who have had good experiences at Entire for a variety of car needs. We’re probably referring to the same people….

Hansen’s.

Big ISU fan.
I'll second Hansen's. I am not very knowledgeable about cars, and he's been straightforward with me going on 10 years with what work my car needs, what can wait another 10k miles, or what doesn't need to be done at all.

When it comes to local, small business owner, you won't find a bigger ISU supporter than Mark Hansen.

Used LOF for a few years until they stripped my oil pan overtightening the plug and refused to stand behind it. Been doing it myself for probably close to 6 years now. 5 quarts and a wix filter is less than 40 bucks.

Go to Trickle's on Lincoln Way. I've gone there for 20+ years for just about everything despite not living in Ames for 3/4 of that time.

I get the PitCrew at my small town not-that-busy Walmart for like $25. The oil used to be conventional but now is synthetic blend.
