Ok. Doesn't change the fact the Group Stage wasn't this great thing. Of course they showed the mental fortitude to blank Mexico 2-0 and go toe to toe with Germany. It's why I said this was in no way sugar coating the **** show our current team is.

But same situation, and we got pounded by a mediocre at best Poland team when the chips were on the table and needed a late South Korea goal to move on. We didn't go earn it ourselves, just like last night. Difference is Bolivia didn't do what South Korea did for the '02 squad.
In South Korea, 8 time zones away. With all the pressure in the world after getting **** stomped in 98. Not the same situation.

I think Berhalter is just a yes man, the businessmen are picking the team for the most part. Not defending Berhalter I don’t think they are guiding tactics but also they very well could be. They see how US people think, “goals goals goals there’s no scoring in soccer!”
Let's go hire Steve Cherundolo. European experience his whole career who has euro coaching experience and now having success leading LAFC. Why not? Veteran of 4 World Cups, although he only played in 3, was injured right before his first selection.

I would go for that. Just worried he will be another yes man. Need a big name that won’t touch it without full control. ******* Wenger is only 74, these kids some learn a lot from him. I’m not sure how the results would play out but it would be a good step forward in the process. If we’re going to be required to play flowing attractive football might as well learn from one of the best. He speaks English and Spanish (among other languages).

So those aren’t excuses…? I know you can never admit you are wrong (closet Republican perhaps since that’s how they all act), but I remember that day against Poland (had to travel to South Korea too) and it was a bit like last night while watching us blow the chance up until South Korea got that goal. Soccer wasn’t as big then, so we were just happy to go through no matter how. And we took advantage of it. We should be better 20+ years later, but we are basically the same from a results standpoint. I have agreed with you on virtually every point in this thread, especially the real problems.

Was simply pointing out the 2002 WC team didn’t do what they were supposed to do in Group play just like last night. Uruguay last night much better than that Poland team, and Poland kicked the crap out of us that day after just being trashed by Portugal. It took help from another team to get to the KO Round then and until late in the match yesterday, we almost had it from Bolivia when they tied it with Panama. We know the rest of the night.

Full credit to the 2002 team once they got to the KO Round, but again, the Group Stage was similar to last night’s situation only against a much worse team.

In full disclosure I know Steve. Grew up with him and his family. First in Rockford, IL then San Diego, CA. Both his father and mine worked for the same company. We had many Thanksgiving Dinners together. His older Brother is a year younger than me Steven is about 4 years behind me. He really learned coaching in Eurooe, not the US. I would be very suprised if he was a Yes man but who knows. He had a hell of a playing career and has done well coaching. He married a German Girl so goes back and forth quite a bit. Still know as "The Mayor of Hannover" in Germany. That Club has not been the same since he retired.

Not opposed to him at all.

I’m so jealous of Columbia and Brazil right now. To see teams that just go out and make plays and aren’t afraid of mistakes is refreshing compared to what USA soccer has been.

Copa America knockout games don’t go to extra time? That’s dumb, this game is getting good.

Can't remember if this was posted in this thread but I think the US Outlaws out out a statement saying Berhalter needs to go.

The best athletes in the US play other sports. The best athletes in the rest of the world play soccer. Imagine our best athletes from the NBA and NFL playing soccer from youth. We would dominate.

While I don’t disagree with this, I feel like this agruement only goes so far. Sure the best soccer players in the world are great athletes, but their technical skill and IQ is what makes them great.

and our coaching and development is lackluster at best. So even if you chose to play soccer, you are likely hampered by a piss poor organization.
