****Official Stop Complaining About Student Turnout Thread****

You have 30,000 students at ISU, several thousand of which are international students who couldn't care less about ISU sports. Then you have 30,000 other people in Ames, and 500,000+ who live within an hour of Ames. While yes, it is much more convenient for students to come to games, it's balanced by the fact that we're massively outnumbered by the "old people" within reasonable driving distance.

Like I say every time one of these threads come up, both "sides" have work to do. The losing culture of the past decade is to blame. But it's not like Hilton was packed with 14,356 people every single night back in the day either.

Looking back, we averaged 10,543 in 2000. So we averaged 4,000 empty seats a game for a team that went 14-2!!! I can only imagine the threads we'd have if CF existed back then. Only jumped to 12,360 in 2001.

We're going to average 13,000 this season. Better than either of our championship seasons.

Disagree about international students. We've had a crowd of international students with us at every game. Those guys literally love basketball, and it's a whole new world from watching the NBA.

Nobody is complaining about our tickets sold number. Its the fact that the students who bought season tickets are not showing up.

Well here's my 2 pennies on the topic, the party that benefits monetarily, because all in all that's what matters at the end of the day, they got their money from the tickets up front, sold out the allotment ,money already in the bank, the rest i.e. concessions, souvenirs is just gravy....if people are so put off by this whole situation, why don't they do something about it instead of gripe behind the facade of a username ?

The turnout sucks, I am sick of hearing I had to study excuses. You will never have more free time in your life then your college years. It is called priorities. that being said, I have always been for free student tickets. I think they should get one side of arena circle and one end lower level. first come first serve. Free food before the game.

I completely disagree with this. I have been waking up at 6:30 the entire week and been doing stuff related to academics and extracurricular activities until about 8 or 9 every night and then working on homework often until midnight. This isn't uncommon for many students I know. It depends on major and involvement, but don't try to tell me students have so much free time. It's about prioritizing things to get everything done. To a lot of students basketball takes a backseat to studying and clubs. I make sure to plan for games and have only missed one game and that was a women's game because of an exam that was at the same time.

Exaaactly. And they deserve to be bashed for this.

Ya, I can't make it to basketball games because I gotta go out in front of the library and win wenches by blasting dudes with a foam sword.

Good thing us "donors" do not feel the same and still donated during the McDermott years and continue to do so now.

Just like a friend, you find out who the true fans are during the bad times. You do not wait until everything is good and then show up.

It takes time to build a fanbase, especially in younger people. Most of the kids in college do not even remember a time when ISU was even relevant in basketball, if we are successful, and play basketball the right way, more fans will show up. And not just bandwagon fans.

If you're so pressed for time then why are you buying a season ticket for basketball?

I think the title speaks for itself.

I don't remember anyone ever complaining about student turnout when we were a below .500 team during McD's tenure, so why are you now???

We are having an amazing year in basketball which we haven't for the last 5 years, so enjoy it!! I can't speak for every student that bought tickets but as a former student during all of McD's tenure, I wouldn't want to go to games because we always seemed to lose, no matter how good we started the year off.

Give it a year before you start raising the pitchforks and going after the student section. Let us establish a "tradition" of winning before you criticize the student section for the lower turnout than the early 2000's. Remember, we had been an above .500 team year after year then with a few Big 12 Championships!

wow wow wow wow wow wow wow wow you along with whoever agrees with you should be banished from all sporting events. we complain because we realize the first sentence of your second paragraph. why you moron students dont show up is beyond us.

It's just as much old people sucking at getting loud/clapping/standing as it is young people not showing up. Anyone who thinks anything different is dumb.

I've been to every home game this year and every home game last year and it was pathetic how much the older people sit down and never clap. Plus they get angry at you when you stand up and clap.

I've also sat in the $99 dollar section and it's 10000X quieter than the student section.

I was joking, but didn't think it was sarcastic, so I had no idea whether to use the jimlad or what to do.:arghh:

haha I figured..my sarcasm meter isn't working today..hopefully it does for mafia.

No, the problem is there are a lot of people who are buying season tickets and never going to the games, and a majority of those people seem to be students. There are 2 seats next to me in Section 206 that have been vacant EVERY game this season. Its perfectly fine to not be excited about Cyclone Basketball right now and be weary about going to games, but if that the case, then why in gods name are you buying season tickets?

We are selling out the place and people are constantly looking for tickets to go to games, yet we have a LARGE portion of the student section EMPTY.

The problem is, its only a couple hundred (iirc, i think theshadow posted the numbers) that have bought but never attended any game. It 'looks' like its more not attending, but you have your hardcore fans that make it to every game, and then fans that attend a percentage of games.. maybe that's 80%, 50% or 25%... either way, they bought a ticket, and they have a right to a space available. We do need to address those that never go at all, i think a paper system would be best for this (if you never pick the paper tickets up, the AD can sell your tickets until you finally show up and claim them)

There are plenty of seats like this around the arena, though oftentimes theyre more likely to be filled as the people that buy them and dont plan on using all of them have an easier time selling them and recouping their investment. (for example, i know of 4 tickets that were unable to be used by someone in the parquet for baylor... they were snapped up in less than a day for $280 each). This ticketholder has requests for tickets for every game.

I don't think the students on this board are the ones this should be directed at.

Idea:
They get rid of student tickets and CA.
Keep same student seating format.
Students can buy $10 ticket for each game.
Tickets would become available 2 weeks before each game.
Students can pay with UBill by swiping ISU Card.
Any left over tickets turn into GA.
Seating would still be first come first serve.

What does everyone think of that?
