Official SDSU Meltdown Thread

Haha, a full recant I will not. I good deal of this could be frustration, you are right. Lets just put it this way, if I were to get tickets as a present Thursday night I would probably attend that game. But if I was at home bored on a game night, I would more than likely think of the 45 minute drive to Ames, how many cases of Natty Lite 60 bucks could buy me (the approximate cost of a ticket for my fiance and I), how painful it was to watch the SDSU game, and finally how empowering it is to have a remote which allows me the privlidge of turning off that crap as I please. I will not go out of my way to attend, but if I were to get the tickets for free I would probably go.

Now on to another rant:

All this fire Jamie Pollard stuff is kind of uncalled for in my book. If my recollection is correct, not many people here were against the McD hire initiatially. Hindsight is 20/20 my friends. Also, lets look at the other candidates:

Jeff Lebo bombed at Auburn.
The guy from Wyomming got fired I believe.
Rob Jeter is still at UW-Mil as far as I know, and we beat them so they SUCK.
UNLV has fallen off the map a bit.

Please give JP a break. Of all the names out there he got what seemed to be a good fit, what has proved not to be a good fit, and hopefully will realize this mistake sooner than later, and move quickly on getting us a coach that can win.

Others have beaten UW-Mil and they are from the MVC like Creighton and UNI. Hey, we have a trendline like the recent football team. We are not oimproving as much as the opposition. Watch out for SDSU when they are on the road, their first year in Div 1. Gimme a break. Are we just going through the motions or the emotions of playing. Looks like motions.

Stayed home last night to paint and I'm proud of it.

Listening to the game, Walters seemed to have a feel it was going to be a long night for us from the start. There was a point later in the 2nd half that he just seemed at a loss for what was going on. I don't envy him and Heft right now - being subjected to all this - madness...between FB and MBB.

Anyways, we started making a run inside 2 minutes with some 3's from Lucca, my wife is in another part of the room painting and I said - "you know how this is going to end, right?". She said "yup, they're going to tease us but lose the game".

Yeah, we've seen this movie far, far too many times. For once, I'd love to have an unpredictable ending.

If McD has decided either by choice or necessity that he doesn't want to win with big athletic talent, than somebody has to explain to me why we haven't gotten players that are fundamentally sound, basketball smart, and good shooters (two games isn't good enough Lucca). Why can't we make a free throw when it matters, or even when it doesn't? In my mind if you aren't a superior athletic talent than by default you are here because you know how to play basketball and can fill a role. We don't seem to have anything. Where is this program going? Freshman PG's don't have a great history of success in this conference so don't expect Colvin to be a cure-all. He will have growing pains too.

A poster above used the term micro-managing and I think they are absolutely right. These guys are nearly instinctless when playing the game. They are so concerned with system it has sucked it out of them. Just wait to you see what that kind of restricted play will do to a talent like Gilstrap.

Unacceptable in year three, Greg. This is Iowa State and that is Hilton Coliseum. It's time to give us more than that.

There is probably some serious truth to this. I'd be interested in seeing what a little looser style of play would look like with this group. I'm not talking chaos from the WM years, but something more like controlled chaos.

However, in order to play like this, you have to have excellent ball handlers. We don't.

I think this tight style contributes to our "killer instinct" problems we have. Do they have the lee-way to win the game or does it add to us being tight?

Fact is our program is in the worst shape its been in since the Brad Johnson Matt Knoll experiment.

Can someone point to one thing that Mac has done in the 2+ years he has been here that would make someone who originally questioned the hire to rethink that position?

4 NBA-type players on a team (Stinson-D-league, Blalock-former NBA, Homan-Oversees, Clark-Oversees) and we went 9-7 in the conference in our "glory" NCAA year. And we started out 0-5.

The next year with all of that returning talent? 6-10 in the conference.

Yes...I LONG for those days again. Squandering good talent away when you should be competing for a conference title.

If they were "NBA type" they would be in the NBA...they are not. Having said that, the talent level under McDermott has really gone into the crapper. I find it much more amenable to have talent that is underperforming than to have no (or little) talent.

I would also say that by losing to Hawaii, Drake, UNI and Iowa that our little to no talent is underperforming.

I actually thought that team did quite well. I would sign up for that record every year. NCAA tournament without ANY NBA players (well I guess Blalock played a couple games with the Pistons)

Better than not beating ANYONE in 3 years. Not anyone.

Ill still be at every game, but dont try to convince me that the program will go anywhere until we can get more than the THREE big 12 caliber players we have (Lucca, CB, DG)

Iowa State MBB is an absolute mess right now. Going back to the Eustachy hire. Eustachy comes in and has a 15-15 year and follows it with years of 32-5 and 25-6. Largely in part to Floyd's boys. Keep in mind this was a fairly "smooth" coaching transition and Tim kept his hands in quite a bit player and recruiting wise to ease the transition. Then Larry follows with seasons of 12-19 and 17-14 before getting the boot. Enter Wayne Morgan. While he was "developing his talent" with players like Stinson, Blalock, Carr, Degand, Clark (ISU Legend), he was winning less games every year he was here (20, 19, 16). Enter GM. I was a big fan of the hire. Anyone else remember how he used to develop big men and get players to play above their talent level (Eric Coleman?). I've yet to see this sort of development with any of our players. Seemed like a lost cause with Jiri, not sure he was too "coachable." Craig is a good player, just not being properly utilized. I like DG as a gaurd. Eik could be a Jake Sullivan, Michael Nurse type player if you put people with drive and kick capabilities around him. I don't see a lack of basketball ability, I see a lack of energy, and leadership.

Leadership has been missing in this program for some time. Larry lost credibility and confidence after the Hampton debacle (cringe). Wayne let Stinson run the show and leadership should come from a coach not a player, thus why we were getting progressively worse. And under the McDermott regime there just seems to be a lack of identity and leadership. People can talk all they want about how it takes x amount of years to build a program, or teams occasionally come out flat, but my God we are Iowa State University. We have 2 regular season championships, 2 conference tournament championships, 5 NCAA tournament appearances, 4 second round appearances, 2 sweet 16 appearances, an elite 8, 2 NIT births reaching the second round in both cases and the final four in the latter, ALL IN THE LAST 12 YEARS! We have a new facility under construction and not to mention some of the best fans in the conference and nation.

One thing that every successful coach at ISU has had is pride. Tim and Johnny's teams came out and fought every night. They took pride in being Cyclones and even when they weren't playing well they were scrappy. We're the fans that applaud for 25 seconds of good defense, that love seeing big Kantrail Horton get on the floor, that love lanky Paul Shirley bumping elbows with some of the best big men in the country, that love the Jared Homan work ethic, the Cato blocks, that love the Dedric Willoughby dedication, the Hoiberg loyalty. These are just recent examples. I could go back years. What makes us mad is an apparent lack of pride and effort. You can come out flat against SDSU and win based on effort and toughness. Being soft, confused, weak, and slow is unacceptable by my standards.

This one is on coaching and leadership. Someone needs to step up and lead this team. Put them on your back. That HAS to start at the HC position and it's their job to instill that kind of leadership into a player or coach on the court if you will (CB). This is absolutely absurd.

Who brought some of those "NBA-type" players here?

I do long for the days when we were 9-7 in the B12.

Please, please stop the comparisons between this coach and the previous coach. The previous coach went to the NCAA and NIT in 2 of the 3 years. Saying that the current guy is better than that guy just makes you look foolish--the only way to prove that is with results. The results aren't there for this guy.

Make an argument about how you think McD will make this team better. Not, "he's better than the last guy". Really?

Excellent post.

We're going to struggle until we play some guards that can attack the rim. Seems like the only guys that can do that are Buckley and DG. Finishing is DG's problem and sitting on the bench seems to hamper Buckley. Not sure why he doesn't play. He seems to take it to the hoop better than anyone.

One of my biggest pet peeves is fading away on your shot. Everyone on the team does this. For one, you just make the shot harder. And secondly, you take away the possibility of a foul being called.

Until this changes, our only hope is to shoot a high % of three's.

Very good post. I'll agree all the way.

Excellent post for number 24000. Why do we just hang around just to lose again? Looks like we need to make some changes because we acannot run an effective two team roster only to lose in non conference to a lower tier team. Someone has to be able to score.
