Official SDSU Meltdown Thread

Lost to SDSU at home? Wow. I gotta beleive that about ends any chance ISU ever had at getting Barnes. I bet the Dukes of the world are grinning from ear to ear.

At least it's not a heart breaking belly flop in the playoffs like the cubs gave us this year. With the Cyclone BB team, we know we're not getting into the post season.

This year???? For the gazillionth time, the Cubs are not a "baseball team", they are a "Randomized Cub-Fan Disappointment Generator". Geez....

Now... Back to ISU fan melt-downing....

Mac took over a program that was diving into a disaster. He was handed the reigns to a program that was quickly falling apart. He's slowly building the program back up to what it needs to be, to be continually successful instead of having a flashy year every once in a while. If you want Morgan, go watch him installing Satelites. Mac is 20 times a better coach than Morgan.

Next year is his last if they don't perform, but we'd only be shooting ourselves in the foot if we fired him after this year. It would probably take a decade before we'd recover.

And freakin relax, it was an embarrassing loss but the season isn't halfway over yet.

Two things:Key word on the McDermott rebuilding clearly is "SLOWLY"I'm impressed that Wayne Morgan's company installs satellites...WOW!

GMac's problem...(long)

I am probably one of the least qualified people to make this post, but I will get it started. I have been "lucky" enough to see 1 game this year, and have listened on the internet to fewer than that. With that said, what you all are seeing is something similar to what we had during Morgan's last year here. It was the strongest reason I had to support Morgan actually.

And this is young big men. Morgan had the same problem. He had talented big men, who were young. And he had some talented perimeter players. Sound familiar? The one problem going around in college hoops these days is that young big men don't stay long. They go pro quick because there really aren't that many of them around any more.

So, what does this mean? It means you need a coach who can get big guys to develop quickly. I sadly haven't seen that much yet out of GMac at ISU. He did it at UNI though.

The one game I saw was the Iowa game, and man I wish I never saw that one. What I saw was a team of jumpshooters, 3-point specialists. One big guy who didn't look that good inside. And only one slasher/penetrator.

My own opinion of basketball is that you need to have a way to get points in the paint. The games ISU seems to have won this year are the other way around.

Diante needs to step up and drive more, in my opinion, because it starts to force teams to worry about that on the inside. Additionally it would be very helpful if someone explained to Thompson that he is TALL. And he should be banging down low. It doesn't matter how thick he is, he should be like Paul Shirley was. Thompson is the one guy I look to who should make an impact on this team. Heck, maybe he is and I just haven't seen enough games. I am sure someone will let me know.

This team will probably beat some teams in the big 12 that it's not supposed to. Jump shooting/3point teams can do that. They can also go on rolls where they win a lot of games.

Anyways, the last thing I will say is that I think this team will straighten itself out. I do think that Mac teams seem to get better over the year.

There is no way Mac gets fired after this year. Next year will be the make or break year. Win or go home.

But my biggest issue is apathy. Another year of crappy basketball and the base will start walking away. The LAST thing I want is for ISU basketball to morph into what Iowa basketball has become...where fans will openly admit they don't care about basketball and they can't draw 10,000 to most games.

Good bye coach Mac.

I really want everone to understand how bad South Dakota State is. I've lived in South Dakota for most of my life and have been a Cyclone fan all my life. South Dakota State just recently moved to the D-1 level. They have really struggled with recruiting since this move. The big discussion around here is that they(SDSU) can't get the players they need to compete at the level they moved to. They still have D-II type players. Anyone who doesn't think so, just look at their record the last couple of years. Don't kid yourself on this....SDSU does not have anyone on their team that any Big 12 school even recruited. If you think that getting recruits to come to Ames, IA is tough, think about trying to get them to come to Brookings, SD. Brookings is a town of about 10,000 people and basketball is not their number one sport. They have absolutely no fan base when it comes to mens basketball. Why, because they are horrible and nobody here in South Dakota wants to drive to Brookings to watch SDSU get blown out by 20 every game.

Now, on to ISU. Coach Mac's style of play "allows" teams like SDSU and others to compete with us. I'll be honest that when coach Mac was hired I was really excited because his Northern Iowa teams played the style of basketball that would allow them to keep it close with the big boys. His style is a slow down, make the other team play defense and work the shot clock, and try to play good defense type of play with less talented players. He does not attack the opposition whatsoever, nor do these players we have deserve to play in a style like Mac's. Our players are way too talented to be put in hand cuffs like Mac does to these boys. Coach Mac, you are ruining these players careers and they deserve better.

I hope everyone realizes that coach Mac is way out of his league at ISU and should be back were he belongs, the MVC. Once again, SDSU will finish in the bottom of their conference AGAIN this year and they are a very, very, very bad team. Come on JP, get a real basketball coach in here.....we the fans and players deserve better.

Fantastic post...you should post more! Very insightful...especially the comment about the McDermott style allowing him to keep it close against the big boys when at UNI but now that style allowing the little guys to hang with us.

Next year is the year for Mac. Unfortunately for Mac, I will not be wasting my time with this team until they beat a team in the B12. No biggie if I was the only one who felt this way. I presume there are thousands like me.

In my opinion, the only thing saving McD right now is Chizik. Weird, but I'm pretty sure Pollard does not want to embark on another coaching search right now.

I was thinking about ISU basketball under McD last night, and I cannot think of one example where we 'handled' a team. Regardless of what patsy we play, we NEVER blow anyone out. Even in the rare instance where we have a comfortable lead in the second half, we always allow the opponent to make a game of it late (the sample set on this is very small - we haven't had a comfortable lead against anyone in recent history).

Finally, i think coaching heart has a lot to do with 'losing a team'. i don't think McD coaches with the same passion or desire at ISU than he did at UNI. Now, clearly I am not inside McD's head and can't say this for certain, but I cannot think of other reasons as to why his coaching is so inneffective at ISU while it was at UNI.

Even if McD did leave or get fired, who the heck would we get? Sure we have great talent and a lot of potential, but who?

we have some problems for sure... but don't give up on GMAC... try to stay positive.

I was at a Drake game when we lost 48-44... that was an ugly game, but we went on to have a pretty good year...

I do not ever want to hear that damn Drake game referenced again!

Are there any Iowa born/raised BB coaches out there to be hired if McDermott is canned? That clearly seems to be a requirement for filling coaching vacancies at this point in Cyclone history.

One thing I have wondered about quite a bit is the passion of the assistants. It seemed like under Floyd, LE, and even Wayne the assistants did alot more in game, especially during time outs and when a player came out of the game. Now it seems like they all wait for Mac to tell them what to do...

I figured you would want a big name coach.

GMac's Top five Wins

1. Missouri 66-65 - Jan 6th 2007 (Only Big 12 Win against a team that finished in the top half of the conference
2. UNI - Dec 3 2008 (Only win against a MVC Team)
3.
4.
5.

The rest are all the same. He doesn't have 1 victory to point to and say look this is what we can accomplish.

They probably all realize they are in over their heads too.

It's going to get really ugly around here when we lose to Houston and Mercer.

I can't wait for this nightmare of a season to end.

I optimistically changed your post.

It's not random. It's planned so well, because they know us Cub fans, that they can make it look random, while they knew all the while it would happen.

Big Cub Brother is watching, and setting up next year's edition of the Cub World Order.

I've been watching for that since you last mentioned it, and I see assistants talking to players one-on-one at every time out. It seems like they're putting in some amount of coaching during the game.

Oh, believe me, I would want big time coach. However, it seems the vast majority of Cyclone faithful would prefer to have an "Iowa boy" for a coach that will bring "stability" to the program and not "look for greener pastures at the first sign of success". Even if that means having mediocre (or worse) results.
