USC is like Texas - amazing resources and yet constantly underachieve. Some day they will fall into luck again, but it won't be because of their own making. IF they get the right coach, USC could be a force... but with such mediocre fans and a horrible administration, it's going to take some luck along the way.

Texas is a good comparison, so is Michigan, the only difference is those schools actually have fans that care. USC has had a few nice seasons since Carroll but nothing special and they haven't been in the BCS/CFP convo since, prior to him, you have to go back to the 70's to find a time when they were top 10 program year in and year out. They have been more relevant in September than November the last decade or so.
I feel like Urban could have had the USC or Texas job last year, him turning them down says a lot about what kind of shape those programs are in.
People loved those first two teams he had. He got crushed by realignment
he did things here that no one had at that time.
he would have been fine in Madison.
It look like the other (non SEC) conferences are going to block 12 team playoff expansion plans. If I'm Lincoln Riley USC may be more appealing than OU in the SEC. He would run roughshod in the relatively weak Pac 12 and make playoffs 3/4 years. HE could own West coast recruiting at USC.
I've never been in the Rhoads sucks or did a terrible job camp. However, as often as coaches get recycled, it's hard to believe that if he was considered a solid coach that he wouldn't get an opportunity at least at a G5 program. Maybe he has and has turned it down. Now maybe you can say since he could win 3-4 games at ISU he could win 5-7 at Wisconsin. But I really doubt he would've lasted long, but who knows. Maybe it would just enough of a talent boost for him to get the job done.
I can’t afford the premium membership here, I ain’t paying for the Athletic….I’m just a sports peasantBut it’s THE ATHLETIC talking about it! It’s a subscription service so you know its really the most amazing thing ever.
Insiders also say he would be interested in South Harmon Institute of Technology or Federal University of Central Kansas. USC is certainly in that orbit, too.![]()
USC coaching candidates: Luke Fickell, Bob Stoops, Chris Petersen among names to replace Clay Helton
There is an obvious top candidate, but the Trojans may have their pick of quality coacheswww.cbssports.com
Matt Campbell, Iowa State coach: Perhaps the No. 1 developmental coach in the country. Think what he could do with the talent USC attracts. Campbell has turned down significant NFL interest. Insiders say he'd be interested Notre Dame and Ohio State. USC is certainly in that orbit.
Which one of you are these insiders?
Honest question: who would want to go to a program that fires their existing coach in week 2?
That season was over at that point. A little different after game 11 vs after game 2.Well he did take over for someone else that was fired before the end of the season
Michigan State? Come on now....Michigan or Michigan state
