USC is like Texas - amazing resources and yet constantly underachieve. Some day they will fall into luck again, but it won't be because of their own making. IF they get the right coach, USC could be a force... but with such mediocre fans and a horrible administration, it's going to take some luck along the way.

Texas is a good comparison, so is Michigan, the only difference is those schools actually have fans that care. USC has had a few nice seasons since Carroll but nothing special and they haven't been in the BCS/CFP convo since, prior to him, you have to go back to the 70's to find a time when they were top 10 program year in and year out. They have been more relevant in September than November the last decade or so.

I feel like Urban could have had the USC or Texas job last year, him turning them down says a lot about what kind of shape those programs are in.

I don’t know about “fall into luck” but when they “push the envelope” they’re nearly unbeatable.

I also think people need to segregate the Reggie Bush/Matt Leinart era from other eras when they were winning. That team was wildly popular and a huge deal with celebrities and the whole works. They'll never recreate that. It's likely that the popularity and excitement ceiling is more like the Carson Palmer era right before that. They had a Heisman winner, won the Orange Bowl and I think finished #2 in the post season AP.

They had two huge crowds of 90k vs. UCLA and Notre Dame. They also had a 74k game. The rest of their home games ranged from 53-63k. I think the reality of USC is for a National Brand the fans are slow to jump on the bandwagon (their three high attendance games were the last three of the year) and they are quick to jump off.

So sure, they can draw 75k or more consistently. All they have to do is have multiple years of being in the top 5.

It look like the other (non SEC) conferences are going to block 12 team playoff expansion plans. If I'm Lincoln Riley USC may be more appealing than OU in the SEC. He would run roughshod in the relatively weak Pac 12 and make playoffs 3/4 years. HE could own West coast recruiting at USC.

People loved those first two teams he had. He got crushed by realignment

he did things here that no one had at that time.

he would have been fine in Madison.

I've never been in the Rhoads sucks or did a terrible job camp. However, as often as coaches get recycled, it's hard to believe that if he was considered a solid coach that he wouldn't get an opportunity at least at a G5 program. Maybe he has and has turned it down. Now maybe you can say since he could win 3-4 games at ISU he could win 5-7 at Wisconsin. But I really doubt he would've lasted long, but who knows. Maybe it would just enough of a talent boost for him to get the job done.

Matt is not going to USC. He's not moving his 4 young kids and wife to LA LA Land. They like Ames. The only jobs that scare me if they came open would be tOSU, Notre Dame or the KC Chiefs.

Relax and go back to what you were doing.

I feel like his next stop is the NFL. I mean if Kliffy can get a job (a really good job actually) after being fired from Tech, Riley could have his pick of jobs.

He would dominate the pac 12 though.

that Wisconsin job when bielma left was still Barry Alvarez’s job.

It was set up to succeed. He would have also had a budget to hire assistant coaches, especially an offensive coordinator

Matt Campbell, Iowa State coach: Perhaps the No. 1 developmental coach in the country. Think what he could do with the talent USC attracts. Campbell has turned down significant NFL interest. Insiders say he'd be interested Notre Dame and Ohio State. USC is certainly in that orbit.

Which one of you are these insiders?
Insiders also say he would be interested in South Harmon Institute of Technology or Federal University of Central Kansas. USC is certainly in that orbit, too.

CFP appearances:
Ohio State: 4
Notre Dame: 2
USC: 0
Iowa State: 0

“That orbit?” Unreal.
