New Depth Chart - NDSU

Looks like the whole offense has started at least a game before. They have no excuses.

The defense has five oldtimer starters. They have an excuse in the first game.

Even though NDSU is a ball running school on offense and tough on defense, we do have some of our bigger players starting. Ferch could probably be replaced even by Kane Seeley if we cannot stop the run.

Talk is that Meeks could move to Sam and Kane play Mike with Miller at Will. Ferch and Brackens on passing downs. Knott and Harris play as well as subs. Meeks is versatile and can play more than one position, like AJ Klein.

Trey Scott has been covering ISU football for exactly 1 year. He's a Texas guy. I'm not sure I care what he says.

I know the reality of ISU football and the mentality of fans. Instead of freaking out, and yes, when there are a bunch of posts all stating the same thing in the first 3 pages, its a freak out--maybe be confident that the guys who have been in the program for a little longer are still holding their own.

Trey is covering the ISU football beat like no one ever has. He is doing an incredible job regardless of where he is from.

I don't believe anyone is truly freaking out but even Trey Scott admits that the JuCo guys were recruited to come in and start immediately. That is why everyone may be a little concerned about what 2014 could bring.

Right. It's not a freak-out, more like disappointing. Harris, Floyd and the other JUCO safety were recruited to come in and push for starting jobs, and Pierson was thought to be possibly starter quality at DE. Time will tell is this round of JUCOs is a true bust, but it's disappointing I will admit. The upside is that we have some redshirt frosh and sophs stepping up their play. I just hope they don't get too overwhelmed with three real tests early unlike some of the cupcakes that our peers feast on.

I think a few people on this site might beg to differ. Besides, I didn't criticize the guy, just stated facts. He has done a great job on the recruiting side. That doesn't mean he is an ISU football expert and that I have to take everything he says as gospel. Saying a team recruits juco players to start isn't exactly a revelation.

fairly positive Trey has way more connections that you do.

But apparently less logic.

No doubt Trey soaked up the normal recruiting rhetoric. With his connections I bet he hears a lot of it.
Perhaps the staff did feel we were going to otherwise be that bad that a bunch of average recruits could show up for fall camp and start. It really is a risk averse move for a staff going into their 6th season after going 3-9, but they are not going to sell it that way.

Even for top level recruits, that is a warning sign, but with the level of recruits we get it almost always means you are going to get poor play at least the first few games. With returning players you have a glimmer of hope for it to be otherwise.

The things that jumped out at me were DM and Luke Knott.

But those have both been explained now. Lets play some football!

Given our program's history, recent and not so recent, confidence is hard to come by for many of us.

Sure, he may not be an ISU football expert but he is providing more content in more detail than anyone ever has.

I'm not saying I know more than Trey Scott but Rhoads stated publicly that they recuited 2 Juco Safeties because of the youth they had back there. The youth apparently beat out the insurance policy. I take that as an encouraging sign.
Damn shame that Devon Moore never came back. The young guys look promising in the long term, but I can't help wonder how the depth chart would look if that had panned out. Moore looked like a very good get at the time.

I'm not concerned about the lack of starters. I always thought of them as being brought in to compete for starting jobs, rather than necessarily start. I always thought Pierson could start, but they put him on the same side as Morrissey so it's not surprising he's a backup. Of the other JUCOs Taylor, Harris, and Floyd will certainly play and should be good players by the middle of the season.

If they're in the 3 deeps they were worth bringing in, never know what position we'll need help at with injuries. Cotton-Moya was rumored to see the field last year if not for his injury.

@ROBWGRAY: Depth chart update: Aaron Wimberly is still the No. 1 KR, per ISU media relations, not DeVondrick Nealy.

I cannot possibly fathom why anybody would be the least bit confident about Iowa State starting a ton of inexperienced and young guys right up the middle at every level of the defense. That is rarely a good combination at elite schools let alone Iowa State.

This is crazy to me.... I get the need for the big play, but these 2 are our work-horses if we lose them, I have a lot of fear in any success this year....

Hard for us to waste a chance to score or really move the ball like you can on a kick off. Any bit of help this offense can get, should be taken

You are crazy. On a per play basis, the added utility of returns is greater than the unsubstantiated claim of an increase of injury.

Nealy and West each had returns for touchdowns last season. When is the last time we've had two guys with special teams touchdowns returning?

Come to think of it, we had about as many big plays last year as we've had in the previous 5 put together. Bundrage had about 5 long TD grabs.

Big plays = potential
