New Depth Chart - NDSU

Juco's almost always take a little time to adjust. Some of our best Juco's were guys that redshirted a year like Collin Franklin. Talented players like Bibbs and Wimberly took a few games to emerge last year.

Either some of you just started following college football or you just have to find things to freak out about. Unless a JUCO guy coming in is a top 10 5* type, rarely will he come in and be the starter on day 1. Tim Dobbins didn't start right away. Coe last year didn't play right away. There are plenty of other examples. It doesn't mean they are busts, it means they had a longer way to go than guys returning who have been in the system longer. Besides, Rhoads said they will all make an impact. Taylor and Pierson literally were cleared to practice the day of the first practice. Harris and Floyd are probably still learning the defense which doesn't happen overnight. The other 2 DEs are injured and Moore didn't make it.

Carry on with the freak out.

I don't think its a "freak out" to state that it is somewhat disappointing to see only 1 of the many JC recruits battling for the starting position, given what our defense looked like last year, and the fact that we recruit these guys to play. Taylor looks like the brightest spot based on the coaches comments. Hoped Harris would have a bigger impact after being here for all of spring ball.

Dobbins did start right away by the way.

Wait are Jensen and Cousin flipped?? Rhoads had Cousin at DT?

This has been discussed; for the first three games of the year against power run offenses, the defense will feature more of a power 4-3 set rather than the normal Big 12 nickel package. Cousin had mentioned that he and Jensen would most likely be on the field together to start the season.

[edit]: I apologize, UNIGuy4Cy: it appears they have indeed flipped positions. Cousin was talking about playing DT, now it appears he is back to nose. My bad.

I don't believe anyone is truly freaking out but even Trey Scott admits that the JuCo guys were recruited to come in and start immediately. That is why everyone may be a little concerned about what 2014 could bring.

Correct; but he didn't really start making a huge impact until a few games in.

Harris is going to play; Wally likes to rotate.

Take another look at Meeks' offer list. I'm excited to see what he can do.

Meeks' offer list is hard to dissect since some of his offers were QB, LB, and maybe even DE.

It's too bad DM looks like he won't play game 1, I don't know this for fact so.... As he's going to have a monster year, dude is a pure stud, we've not had a wr with his size and skills maybe ever. Maybe it's only a half game deal. Just glad the kid pulled himslef together the right way.

as for the defense..so long as we don't lose anyone in the secondary to injury our starters will be fine. TJ and cotton are going to be really good just might tAke a year.

Trey Scott has been covering ISU football for exactly 1 year. He's a Texas guy. I'm not sure I care what he says.

I know the reality of ISU football and the mentality of fans. Instead of freaking out, and yes, when there are a bunch of posts all stating the same thing in the first 3 pages, its a freak out--maybe be confident that the guys who have been in the program for a little longer are still holding their own.

It is what it is. I am not surprised that the Jucos are not starting, since some of them came in the fall. Even if they are more talented than the starters, they are probably make too many mistakes in practice at this point in time. We will probably see some of them play on Saturday, but I would be surprised if there are more than one on the field at a time. Really would have been nice if they could have come in at the semester, but that is the way it goes some times.

fairly positive Trey has way more connections that you do.

The two aren't mutually exclusive. I think everyone who follows the program expects those guys to struggle at times due to inexperience, but even if they do struggle early on this season that doesn't mean the future at those positions is any less bright. Mutcherson, KCM, and Meeks especially look to have a ton of potential.

Agree, they're not mutually exclusive. But I think if the defense is even close to average, that's a very good sign for the future.

It should be noted that none of those 3 that you mentioned have played for us yet. I'm optimistic about their potential, but until we've seen them on the field we really don't know what we have, especially since no one on the depth chart at those positions have played a snap in a real college game yet. It could (not saying it is) just be the situation that someone has to play.

Looks like the whole offense has started at least a game before. They have no excuses.

The defense has five oldtimer starters. They have an excuse in the first game.

Even though NDSU is a ball running school on offense and tough on defense, we do have some of our bigger players starting. Ferch could probably be replaced even by Kane Seeley if we cannot stop the run.

No problem, kind of confused. Cousin is more athletic in that spot.

I'm not saying I know more than Trey Scott but Rhoads stated publicly that they recuited 2 Juco Safeties because of the youth they had back there. The youth apparently beat out the insurance policy. I take that as an encouraging sign.

They're learning an entirely new offense.
