Moving to Omaha / Council Bluffs Area - Where should I look?

[Let's Go State]

Looking for a good school, smaller preferred. Prefer within 30 minutes of a Target, Modern Church, and Ice Arena. (strange requests... important for family...not first move).

Any experts on the area?

East side of Council Bluffs.

Lewis Central or Treynor if you live closer to there. DO NOT send your kids to AL or TJ in Council Bluffs. St Alberts if you want a Catholic School.

Get on google maps and search for Greenview Road, find where it intersects with State Orchard. Tons of new housing and land to build on. Hard to go wrong with that area.

I live off of Greenview on Ridgwewood Dr (mile east of State Orchard). Great neighborhood with middle class homes.

Target, Wal-Mart, and Hy-Vee all within 5 minutes. Buffalo Wild Wings, Olive Garden, any fast food (besides Wendy's ) you can think of, also all within 5 minutes.

East side of Council Bluffs is nice. I believe we both lived there.

I Live in the Bent Tree area off McPherson and near Highway 6.

10 minutes from Target and right on a very nice golf course.

I went to school at Treynor (great school) which is just 10 miles from CB and it is a smaller 2A school. Lewis Central is a 4A school. Much bigger. t just depends on your preference. But those are the two schools I would consider first.

But AL is a nice school with a lot going for it. Lots of renovations and additions going on there that are turning that school into a moderately nice place.

Now, if you want your kid to be a pot-smoking hippie that amounts to nothing in life, then by all means, send your kid to LC. :smile:

And to the OP, east CB is where it's at.

If I were you? I would look in the Field Club/Holy Cross area in Omaha (old historic homes). Your choice of two very good catholic grade schools (O.L.L. and Holy Cross) Hitchcock ice arena nearby. Close to downtown. Great affordable country club. (Really going to base your move on a Target?)

Otherwise look way out west at 125th and Maple. That will have everything you mentioned. Great if you are into the Pleasantville/suburb/beige on beige sort of thing.

East Counciltucky is O.K....for Counciltucky.

I'd suggest my home town of Glenwood. It's a little ways south of Council Bluffs, a couple miles off I-29. 20-25 minute-ish drive to CB. Town of around 5,500, 3A school district, and an awesome brand new high school (just opened a year or two ago). Glenwood's district is growing and not dying off like a lot of small towns. You get the good qualities of a small town while still having a convenient and fairly short drive up to Manawa, Bellevue, or downtown Omaha.

And to the OP, east CB is where it's at.

AL has a decent school and just updated the baseball field and gym, but the CB school system is a joke. If I had to choose between the 2 it would obviously be AL. But LC and Treynor are both better options IMO.

Send your kid to AL if you want him to become a member of K.R.E.W.(Kids Really Enjoying Weed). Just shot down that argument :smile:

If you're looking on the Omaha side, I living in Bennington, NE which I find pretty nice. Bennington is a small town on the NW side of Omaha with lots of new subdivisions around it. We live near 156th and State St. which is only 3 miles outside of Omaha city limits.

Bennington Schools have a great reputation in the area. Though Bennington itself is small (1000 people) I believe the high school has around 400 students so it's probably in the 2A class. There is an ice arena near 120th and Maple St. and plenty of churches; all within a 10 minute drive.

We live pretty far out from downtown Omaha, but I work in mid-town and can make it home in 30 minutes during rush hour. So really, anywhere in the Omaha area is 30 minutes from downtown as long as you don't go way far outside the city.

If you're comparing IA vs NE sides of the river, be prepared to pay much higher taxes on the NE side.

Buying or Renting? Midtown is starting to make a nice comeback with renovations everywhere. It is a family atmosphere just off the more rowdy Old Market area.

There is a 50/50 chance I may be moving to C.B. also within the next month or two. (hope I didn't just jinx it!) I have kind of messed around looking for realtor sites that list rental homes. Are there any sites that any of you locals would recommend looking at? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I deal with all of the agents on a daily basis and am not a agent myself. Also live on the East side of CB. Not as far out as bent tree but our kids will be going to AL and will be in the new elementry school they are currently building.

I honestly dont know why anyone would want to live in Omaha. Maybe if I was single or retired the old market/Dundee area would be apealing, but with a family CB is by far the best option. Good luck to all!! and its exciting to be getting some more cyclone blood in town... Im surrounded by hawkeys (my wife) and Huskers......

I would add the Elmwood area. There's a Target at 72nd and Dodge. Elmwood golf course and community pool are there. Easy to get to downtown.

Could you elaborate on this one? I am single, live in Omaha and absolutely love it here. I don't think that feeling would change if I had a family.

My wife and I just bought a house in Elkhorn, which is technically west of Omaha but has been annexed into city limits. We will be in NW Omaha. The biggest thing for us was staying out of Omaha Public Schools systems, Millard and Elkhorn have better reputations for public and there are several good (but expensive) private schools all over town. There are several options near Millard and Elkhorn for Target, etc.. Also I work in Council Bluffs and can make my commute during the rush in about 35 minutes most days so not bad.

I don't believe there are any ice arenas in west O so if that makes or breaks you, you may want to look farther east.
