MLB: MLB Extra Innings package on DIRECTV

I am seriously considering buying the MLB Extra Innings package for this season, but have never done it before. Last year, I went to B-dubs and watched a lot of home Giants games late at night (here, a 9 p.m. first pitch for games at AT&T Park). I figured it would probably cost me less to get the package and watch the games at home than it did to spend money on dinner and a drink all summer long at B-dubs. DIRECTV's web page says you can pay $40 a month for five months for the service, which doesn't sound bad, now that I'm working again.

Have people used Extra Innings before? And if you have, what were your thoughts? Did you think it was a good deal, did you make good use of it once you had it, and were there any problems that would make you re-think getting it again? Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts...

If you've got a good Internet connection, I'd highly recommend getting a MLB.tv subscription. It costs less than going the Extra Innings route. I love the flexibility of being able to watch on either a tablet or smart phone plus you can still stream to a TV if you have either a Xbox or PS3.

I too would go with MLB.tv. I love it and have used it for 3 or so yrs.

I really really really really really really love MLB.tv. The only thing that sucks is sometimes the games are blacked out. I'm a reds fan though so I don't have a problem unless they play the Cubs or Cards. The brewers games are blacked out every once and awhile. Would recommend it.

That sounds good, but my only real interest is in the satellite service. We don't have any gaming devices whatsoever, so there would be no way to stream it to the tv, and watching on a small smart phone or tablet screen holds little appeal. One of the benefits (to me) of going to B-dubs to watch the games was I could have it put on a big screen right in front of me, making me feel like I'm almost there in person.

But it sounds like, otherwise, you all have liked Extra Innings, correct?

Does Extra Innings not black out games, then? That would be ideal, because I don't want to have to put up with not being able to watch when the Giants are at Chicago, St. Louis, or Milwaukee. I really hate that MLB considers Iowa to be a "local market" for the Twins, Royals, Cards, Cubs, White Sox, AND Brewers. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Black outs would be no problem for an SF fan in Iowa. You can buy a roku device for 30 bucks or so on eBay to put the game on ur tv. You don't need a ps3 or Xbox. Extra innings is waste of money.

This. Blackouts won't be a problem for you as a SF fan, they're only a problem for us fans of the Cubs, Cards, Twins, White Sox, Royals, Brewers.....you know, all the teams that 99% of the people here in the market want to see. I'm not bitter or anything.

You're totally right. MLB.tv SUCKS for people in Iowa.

Blackout rules on extra innings and MLB.tv are EXACTLY the same. You will get the same games. MLB.tv let's you choose the broadcaster, not sure if extra innings does. In Iowa, you will need sports pack when Giants play Cubs, White Sox, Cards, Royals, Twins or Brewers. They will be blacked out on both packages in that case.

I have Direct tv in Iowa City. Get the extra innings + the sports pack. Sports pack costs $12/ month extra. You can get it for $8 if you have been a good customer. There are very few games that are blacked out with this package. If you don't get it on extra innings, it can usually be had on the sportspack channels. I'm not certain about Royals home games, but I get the home games of the Twins, Brewers, Cardinals and the Cubs, White Sox on the Fox Sportspack. Best $50 / month a baseball fan can spend.

I am interested in MLB.tv this year. I have heard one account can have 5 simultaneous feeds at a time. If this is true, I would be willing to go in on a MLB.tv account with some people to split the costs.

Since we are blacked out KC, Cubs, Sox, St Louis, Minnesota, and Milwaukee it is only appealing to fans that are out-of-market. Even then, there will be many games you can't watch. Certainly would never pay $130 for this service alone.

Even if I miss out on a couple of games because of blackouts, I will be ok with it. Sometimes I DO actually have other stuff to do during baseball season (but usually not between 9 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.). We talked about it this afternoon and we're definitely going to get the package. Last year, I subscribed to the MLB audio feed to listen to KNBR (Giants' flagship station) for home AND away games and it was pretty cool, considering it only cost $19 for the whole season. So, until I win Powerball and get my OWN season tickets to the Giants (and move there to cut out the commute time), this should do nicely.

Just 37 days until opening day! I've missed baseball so much. The DVDs of the WS and Cain's perfect game only get me so far anymore.

I'm a Dodger fan that has the MLB package with mediacom, and I get the Cardinal games on Fox sports midwest, and some of the Cubs games (probably the ones on WGN). The Brewers are the only blackout problem as the Dodgers rarely play the Royals or Twins.

Had the satellite package when I lived in Texas. The Rangers had no appeal to me and what's better than drifting off while listening to Vin Scully?

The Giants broadcasters are entertaining as heck!

I have the MLB.TV package through my Roku now. That package definitely has more features
