McDermott to Creighton?

Just throwing my hat in the coaching ring. I'll lead ISU MBB for $100,000/year. That's 1/8th of what Greg did it for, and if I fall below what he did, I'll refund half of my paycheck. I have integrity, and I'm a good guy. Apparently those are the only relevant characteristics to do this job.
Sadly, there is a good chance that if you spent $500K of the savings on top assistants you could better our 4-year run.
Could a program strapped for cash win by hiring a young, unproven, not-in-demand, but well known assistant for a $200K, and spend another $500K on top assistants? The press from hiring an inexperienced candidate may be too hard to overcome though.

can you?

you don't even know the make up of the team yet.

Isn't that pretty much the point??????

Here it is almost May, and we don't have any idea who will be playing this year! And, yes, I said "this year" because the basketball season is closer than some realize. It's only 5 months until full-scale scrimmages begin, and we don't know who will be playing!

Can you name one team that was this badly shaken up this close to the beginning of a season, that did not end up being really bad?

Hoiberg has already called the hiring of Nurse, and Grayer great hires, and has said ISU fans should be excited. I'd be very excited if we'd plug him in for MCD.

This would create a lot of positive PR and excitement. But that would be one incredibly inexperienced coaching staff for the big 12. I don't think that would be a good idea.

Why......because they might go 4-12/15-17 for the next couple of seasons? They might underestimate what type of player to recruit at this level? They might not be able to relate to this generation and how self centered they are?

I see the sarcasm dripping from your response. I'm not defending McDermott, just the suggestion of adding Hoiberg to lead Nurse, Grayer, Otzelberger. It would seem valuable to have a head coach on this staff that has coached major college basketball before with the two new assistants that were brought in.

You want Hoiberg to be head coach? Then have him bring in some experienced assistants.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. MOST D1 college head coaches have buyouts. When Pollard hired GMac, he was initially after the HC at UWGB and even he had an $800k buyout. GMac has a buyout. Ben Jacobson has a buyout. Everyone does. Auburn payed ISU $750k for taking Chizik. When a coach is hired by another school, that school has to pay the buyout.

Assistants just have contracts. Some are one year, some are two or more. The only way a school can get out of paying the full amount of that contract is if they take another job that pays equal or more. If it's less, than the original school pays the difference (like ISU is with Wayne Bolt).
So if there is a buyout, it is a flat dollar amount. In other words, Creighton would not have to buy out the remainder of his contract at ISU in its entirety.

That said, I still don't buy that EVERY coach has a buyout for EVERY situation. I believe some schools say you can't leave for a conference or in-state rival. In fact, I've heard some coaches balk at having buyouts because it limits their career flexibility.

I thought I recalled someone asking Pollard when he hired McDermott if there was a buyout for him to leave for the Iowa job. And I thought the answer was somewhat along the lines of,"No, we don't have to be scared of anyone."

in retrospect....he was right.

just not in the way he thought.

Throw in some Ecto-Cooler, and we got a deal!

That may be a little too much, we really need to get rid of the guy and I would hate to drive them off. I think we could settle for the 3 items mentioned previously and try to include a container of Gak.

:biglaugh: "the torpedo." that's good

IMO if this happens Nurse is promoted to a 2 year deal as head coach. Honestly I don't see why people are so down about that idea. Look at the other head coaching hires in D1 this year? The hires that have been made programs with much greater resources than we have at our disposal are less than inspiring. Frankly, I'm not convinced Nurse wouldn't be a better head coach than McD is right now. IMO NBA-D league head coaching success > Mo Valley Head coaching success. NBA D league is a lot closer to Big 12 basketball than is the Mo Valley on a talent level.

Give Nurse a short contract with some big incentives. IMO he would be one of the best D1 Basketball hires this season. People just don't seem to respect his ability because it isn't from a college level. You don't succeed as a head coach in Europe and get your D-League team to the conference finals without knowing how to coach.

Normally, I'd disagree with you here, but you may be onto something. Coaching in the D-League involves working with players with various backgrounds, varying levels of maturity, and NO continuity due to the constant threat that if you build a great team, the Pro League will raid you for all your good players.

This might be the best possible preparation for coaching at ISU in the post-GMac era. Maybe giving him a short incentive-laden contract wouldn't be a bad move.

Good luck to Coach Nurse in recruiting with just a 2 year contract. It's a terrible idea. Terrible.

Creighton isn't dumb enough to hire Mac. It's just that simple. His tenure at ISU has been a train wreck and they will get someone better. "Columns" may have brought him up but those are columns, not news stories.

I look for Darian Devries or Scott Sutton to get the job.

IIRC, wasnt Dana Altman a failed KSU coach before he came to CU? That worked for them before. GMac has proven he can have success at the mid-major level.

Because Creighton is in a great position to hire a new basketball coach. If you didn't notice, Oregon, with a budget of close to infinity, just hired Dana Altman as coach. If you can get a proven MVC coach who has recruiting contacts in the area, you don't turn it down. I would say this job is his if he wants it. We can only hope.

I believe assistants at ISU (and several other schools) have always been signed to either annual or 2 year contracts. I dont think there is anything unusual there
